RESEARCH PROPOSAL
PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH:

Since the beginning of the degree course in this university, something always
occupied our thoughts; something always kept bugging us and kept our interest alive
regarding the student-teacher relationship. This thing was a question, put as, “What
determines the student-teacher relationship?” We always wanted to inquire about it
but never knew how to. Studying the course of “Business Research Methods” gave the
direction to our thoughts that we always lacked. After analyzing the student-teacher
relationship and hours of discussion with our psychology lecturer in great detail we
came to realize that this relationship holds because of the primary interaction between
the two, at a venue called classroom. This relationship is dominated by the behavior
of the teacher, according to the psychology lecturer, as he/she has a profound impact
on the thinking, perception and attitude of the student because of the authoritative
position of the teacher. So, in this research we will try to find out, “the factors that
determine the classroom behavior of a teacher”. We are doing this research to give
some thing new to the university and make the teachers aware of the fact that how
their behavior affects the students’ performance, class participation, ethics, norms and
values. This will help us in determining about, how a teacher relates himself to
his/her students. And Furthermore, this interaction forms the general concept of, as to,
how the opposite parties view each other. So, in brief our objectives for doing this
research are:
• To enhance the knowledge and understanding of those factors which
determine the teachers’ behavior in the classroom?
• To let the teachers take a glance at their behaviors and to find about how the
teachers relate themselves to their students.
• To put the theory we learnt in the course of BRM into practice.
• To make the teachers aware of the influence their behavior has on the
attitudes, perceptions and thinking of their students.

RESEARCH DESIGN:

Most of the data in our research will be primary which we will gather through
interviews but mostly by questionnaire. Under well constructed theoretical framework
we will identify the variables that affect the teacher’s behaviors; our prime focus is on
the dependent variables that are influenced by the independent variables. And
accordingly develop the effective hypotheses. We will collect qualitative data in the
form of open ended and close ended question answers. We will conduct different
steps to make this research possible and conduct our research by the hypothetico-
deductive method on following pattern:
1: Observation
2: literature survey
3: Problem identification
4: Theoretical frame work
5: Identification of variables
6: Hypothesis development
7: Data collection
8: Data analysis and interpretation
9: Final conclusion
10: Summary

As our research will focus on collecting responses from the teachers, so in this limited
time we have chosen the survey research method to conduct our research. We will
distribute questionnaire among the teachers and ask them to answer the questions
asked in it, promising them to keep their identity confidential in order to increase the
truth in the facts we discover from this research. To further strengthen our findings we
will also conduct interviews from a sample of teachers (statement open for
reconsideration, subject to the time constraint involved).
Some sample questions that will be asked are:

With what type of mood you usually try to enter into your class?
• Relaxed/Normal
• Kind hearted
• Funny
• Have to complete the syllabus
• Serious (will not stand nonsense)

What comes first to your mind if a student misbehaves?

• Punish him
• Avoid him
• Depends on the situation
• Counsel him after the class
What is your reaction if a student does not participate in the class?
• Make him participate
• Find out the reason
• Ignore the fact
• Depends on situation and frequency of his behavior

What approach you take to get along with your class throughout the semester?
• Depends on their behavior
• Friendly
• Learning oriented
• Have to cover the syllabus
• Its only six months
• I get paid to teach, not to get along

In the interview we will ask the same questions from the questionnaire or we might
ask different questions (subject to further discussion with the psychology lecture).
SAMPLE DESIGN:

We will conduct the research in the city campus from the point of convenience. So
among all the faculty of BUITEMS, we will study only the faculty at city campus,
numbering about 120 without the discrimination of the department in which they
teach. So our research sample will consist of 120 teachers. We will conduct
interviews with another 10-15 teachers from the primary sample of 120.

DATA GATHERING:

All of our group members will distribute and collect questionnaires to and from the
faculty members. We will also conduct interviews with the sub-sample of the
teachers.

DATA PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS:

After the collection of the data we will use certain statistical tools, for example chi-
square test, regression analysis, correlation analysis and simple mean, mode, median
techniques. For that we will seek the help of our statistic lecturer.

REPORT PREPARATION:

A complete and thorough written report will be prepared after the process of data
analysis and if required we can also give an oral presentation of the findings that we
will make during this research. The report will provide the detailed facts and figures
of the data analyzed.

RESEARCH EXPENDITURE:

The prime costs incurred in this research will be limited to the use of paper and Xerox
use in this research. A single sheet of paper costs Rs.1, so 120 paper sheets will cost
Rs, 120. A single Xerox costs Rs. 1.30, so 119 xerox will cost Rs. 178.5. We will
gather and analyze the data ourselves which will not incur any cost to the
organization. We will utilize our own resources for preparing the questionnaire and
analyzing the data collected, e.g. use our computer and paper to sheets for data
analysis. Thus, this whole research will cost Rs. 300 approx.

TIME SCHEDULE:

The time for each research stage is mentioned below with the necessary details;

Questionnaire preparation 2 days approx

Distribution of questionnaire (depending upon 1 day

exogenous factors)
Collection of questionnaire (depending upon the 1 day
availability of the teacher)

Conducting interviews:
Time consumed in single interview 30 minutes
Total interviewees 15
Total time consumed in interviewing 15*30=450 min
Or 7.5 hours or
1 day approx

Data processing and analysis 2+1= 3 days

Report preparation 1 day

Total time taken in the whole research process 9 days approx
