Introduction, Analysis and synthesis, Kinematics and Dynamics, Mechanisms and Machines,
Plane and Space Mechanisms, Kinematic links, joints, Pairs, types of motion, Kinematic Chains,
Kinematic Diagrams, Kinematic Inversion, Four Link Planar Mechanisms and their Inversions,
Mobility and range of movement - Kutzbach and Grublers criterion, Mechanical Advantage,
Grashofs criterion.
Motion analysis:- (6 Hrs)
Displacement analysis of plane mechanisms graphical and analytical methods, Plane motion of a
rigid body, Instantaneous Centre (IC) of Velocity, Velocity analysis using IC, Velocity analysis
using relative velocity Diagrams, velocity and acceleration diagrams rubbing velocity, Coriolis
component of acceleration.

Pantograph, exact straight line mechanisms, approximate straight line mechanisms, universal

compulsory question spread over the whole syllabus & consisting of short answer questions. The

UNIT- I

Materials & their crystal structure (7 Hrs)


Materials and their classification, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical properties, atomic bonding,
crystal structures, crystal structure in metals (body centered cubic, face centered cubic, hexagonal
close packed), Crystallographic notation of atomic planes, polymorphism and allotropy.

1. Crystallography (8 hrs)
Structure of Solids: Crystalline and non-crystalline materials & their properties Crystal Imperfections:
Point defects, Line defects, dislocations, Surface defects, volume defects. Diffusion: Diffusion
mechanism, Laws of diffusion, steady and non -steady-state diffusion, factors affecting diffusion.
Unit-II
2. Theories of plastic deformation, recovery and re-crystallization (6 Hrs)
Plastic deformation, recovery and re-crystallization
3. Equilibrium Diagram (10 Hrs)
Solids solutions and alloys, Gibbs phase rule,Equilibrium Diagram, Equilibrium Diagram of binary
system, iron carbon equilibrium diagram and phase transformations. Temperature time transformation
(TTT) curves: construction and application.

Heat treatment processes viz. annealing, normalizing, hardening, tempering. Surface hardening:
carburizing, nitriding, cyaniding, induction and flame hardening. Applications of different heat

law of thermodynamics and their applications to non-flow & flow processes, Second law of
thermodynamics. Clausis & Kelvin Plank Statement; Entropy; Representation of processes on P-V & TS Diagrams
2. Properties of Steam: (5 Hours)
Introduction, formation of steam at constant pressure from water, Temperature v/s total Heat graph during
steam formation, Important terms for steam, Steam tables, Advantages of Superheating the steam, Entropy of
wet, dry steam & Superheated steam. Temperature Entropy diagram for water & steam, Mollier Diagram,
Basic Thermodynamic processes with steam- constant volume, constant pressure, constant temp., and
isentropic processes, and their representation on T-S chart & HS diagram
3.Boilers (5 Hours)
Boiler Classification, Fire and water tube boilers; Description of Cochran, Locomotive, Lancashire,
Babcock and Wilcox boilers, Stirling Boiler, mountings and accessories; Economizer, super heater etc.
Modern high pressure boilers. Characteristics of high pressure boilers, steam accumulators, boiler
performance-equivalent evaporation, boiler efficiency, boiler trial and heat balance sheet.

5. Condensers:

(8 Hours)

Introduction, Classification, Parts of steam condensing plant. Mixture of Air & Steam based on Daltons law,
condenser and vacuum efficiencies. Cooling water calculations. Methods to check and prevent air
infiltration. Air pump and calculation of its capacity. Cooling Towers and its types.
UNIT - III
6. Vapour Power Cycle: (9 Hours)
Carnot cycle, efficiency ratio, Rankine cycle, methods of improving efficiency, Feed water heating
(Bleeding), reheat cycle, combined reheat regenerative cycle, Ideal working fluid - Binary vapour cycle ,
combined power and heating cycles.
7. Nozzles: (9 Hours)
Introduction, Types of steam nozzles, Flow of steam through convergent- divergent nozzle, Critical pressure
ratio, Diameter of throat and exit for maximum discharge, friction in a nozzle, Nozzle efficiency,
Supersaturated flow or metastable flow, effects of supersaturation.

capacitive pick ups, photo cells and piezo-electric transducers and application of these elements
for measurement of position / displacement, speed / velocity / acceleration, force and liquid
