ANIMAL FARM-George Orwell

The Book Animal Farm by George Orwell is an impressive representation of the Russian revolution by
the association to the animal world.
The animals in the Manor Farm, tired of human treatment of animals, stir up an uprising against their
owner Jones Manor. Once Jones fled the farm, the whole farm with all its luxuries and facilities, was
available just for animals and eventually they changed the name of the farm to Animal Farm. Two
boars- Snowbell and Napoleon emerged as the master minds in continuing the functioning of the Animal
Farm. The animals tried learning the human language using the books at Manors farmhouse. Pigs, being
the smartest of all, learnt to read as well as write. They laid out all the plans and guided other animals in
their day to day activities. They even laid out the seven commandments as the fundamental rules for
all animals in the animal farm which are painted on the wall of the farm. They even had an anthem
which they used to sing in their regular assemblies. All the animals were content with their freedom.
They produced better harvest that year and each of the animals had more food than ever to consume.
In the midway of the story, Mr. Jones attacks the Animal Farm with a few people with guns. However,
the excellent plan laid out by Snowbell for such an expected situation turned no stones unturned in
failing their attempts. During the war, Snowbell gets injure by a bullet. Boxer, the horse, and Snowbell
are given the bravery award- First Class for representing great zeal and courage in the struggle.
Further development plans for the animal farm were now being decided upon. But the two emerging
leaders Snowball and Napoleon were never of the same opinion. For example, when the discussion
was about the building of a windmill in the farm, Snowball strongly favored it while Napoleon was
strongly dismissive about it. Other animals, however, found themselves in the favor of whosoever was
speaking at the moment. Snowball was convinced that it was a hard job to do, he was sure that such
machinery would reduce the future work of the animals, thus, making their life more luxurious. One day,
they had a debate for a decision on the issue. Snowball spoke first where he very convincingly moved
everyone by hi s words and his vision of the windmill. There was nothing Napoleon could have said o
convince them otherwise when Napoleon appeared with nine ferocious dogs (whom he had been
teaching and nurturing since their birth). The appearance of those dogs created a wave of fear among all
the animals. They chased Snowbell until he left the Animal Farm and was never seen again. Thus
Napoleon became the sole unspoken leader of the farm.
Further the story follows with the change in attitude of Napoleon towards other animals but pigs. He
kept on breaking the seven commandments by indulging in one or the other of the human pleasures. To
justify himself, he kept on mending the commandments painted on wall as well. He and his followers
spread negative opinions about Snowbell among other animals picturizing him as a traitor. Not only this,
pigs also involved in the trade activities with humans, slaughtered other animals, consumed alcohol,
slept in the beds. Whenever an animal raised an objection to any of the Napoleons actions, they were
either convinced otherwise by Squealer or slaughtered for going against the Master. There were songs
written about Napoleon. Worst of all happened when under Napoleons guide; twice did he animals try

to build the windmill. Their hard work was hampered by human attacks. However, Napoleon chose to
blame it all on Snowbell. The uneasy sense that animals had about losing their freedom, their food
under Napoleons rule was all suppressed by the fear of getting slaughtered.
Finally the story ends with the animals peeking in through the windows of the farmhouse, where pigs
and humans are playing cards, having beer , walking on two feet and talking in a common language.
There starts a commotion; humans and pigs were all fighting. This made the animals realize that pigs
were no less than humans and that once again, they are being ruled over by the mean humans in form
of Napoleon.
