Consumers unaware of ESC systems

Whats helping
you drive?
BY STEPHANIE GROVES
DHI Media Staff Writer
sgroves@delphosherald.com
This is the time of year when many people
choose to shop for and purchase a new or used
vehicle and if an individual has not been on a car
lot in the last few years, they should be prepared
for the new driver assistance technologies
extras which could add a significant cost to the
purchase price being offered in many vehicles
today.
The American Automobile Associations (AAA)
Foundation for Traffic Safety reports about 50 percent of consumers do not know what an Electronic
Stability Control (ESC) system is or whether it is
implemented in their current vehicle.

them safer.
Depending on the vehicle, stability control systems will have a brand name like StabiliTrak in GM
vehicles or AdvanceTrac in Ford vehicles.
Raabe Ford Service Manager George Berelsman
said AdvanceTrac is constantly monitoring wheel
speed and steering activity to help maintain control
of the vehicle while driving in hazardous conditions.
It works through the anti-lock brake system
(ABS) for traction control and keeps wheels from
spinning by slowing the engine to reduce wheel
spin on acceleration, he said. There are times
when a driver may want wheel spin for traction,
for example, if they are stuck in snow. They can
turn the system off with a push of a button located
on the dash.
Delpha Chevrolet Buick Service Manager Bill
Schulte said StabiliTrak works with the anti-lock
break system and when wheels begin slipping,
the system applies pressure to one or more of the
Vehicle owners who are familiar with ESC wheels to stabilize the vehicle.
systems generally have a high opinion of it with

Spencervilles new water plant

suffers cracked membrane
BY STEPHANIE GROVES
DHI Media Staff Writer
sgroves@delphosherald.com

SPENCERVILLE During the last village council meeting, Spencerville Village

Administrator Sean Chapman informed
council members that one cracked membrane housing would need to be replaced
at the water treatment plant after the first of
the year.
The membrane housing was discovered
to be cracked shortly after the plant went
online, Chapman detailed. The unit was
ordered immediately and it took this long to
ship and receive the new equipment.
He said IFM is also planning to do some
piping modifications since the pH probe is
not located in a place that allows for accurate
reads; this ultimately affects the performance
of the plant and must be changed.
Council members anonymously placed
an ordinance amending and adopting the fee
schedule for the Village of Spencerville on
its second reading.
Council also suspended the rules and
passed on first reading two ordinances; the
first legislation provided for 2015 temporary
appropriations for the village; and the second
piece of legislation reduced appropriations in
the enterprise improvement fund for the current year (2014).
Council approved payment of the villages bills in the sum of $10,899.05.
Police Chief Darin Cook informed coun-

cil members he should have the year-end

statistics ready after the first of the year.
Village Clerk Dawn Bailey presented
council with a copy of the proposed 2015
Appropriations Budget for review.
As reported during the Dec. 8 council meeting, Chapman explained to council
members that the villages monetary share
of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) sidewalk extension project which the village
received a $96,000 grant for exceeded his
expectations by $20,000. Chapman advised
council the villages estimated share of the
project was $40,000 and the design costs
close to $48,000.
After discussion, council members unanimously voted to cap the villages share of
the project at $20,000. Chapman has since
been working with the Ohio Department of
Transportations (ODOT) central office and
they have approved the request to cap the villages share of the SRTS project at $20,000.
ODOT will pick up the balance and
perform many of the if authorized tasks
regarding the design, Chapman said.
He explained ODOT wants to ensure
all village representatives understand the
culvert extension proposed is not to address
flooding issues in that area; it is solely to
accommodate the new sidewalk. It would
be very difficult and expensive to connect a
properly-sized culvert to the existing 42-inch
inlet pipe.

Strunkenburg
pleads guilty
to 2 of 4 charges
BY ED GEBERT
DHI Media Editor
news@delphosherald.com

VAN WERT Despite seeming reluctant to say the words,

former Van Wert County Dog Warden Rich Strunkenburg
entered guilty pleas to two of the four felony charges against
him Wednesday in Van Wert County Court of Common Pleas.
During the hearing, 38-year-old Strunkenburg was answering a series of questions about the pleas he was making when
Judge Charles Steele asked him, Are you pleading guilty
because you are guilty as charged?
Strunkenburg answered, I am pleading guilty.
Steele continued, Because you are guilty as charged?
Yes, Strunkenburg conceded.
Sentencing will be made on Feb. 2 on the two charges.
Special Prosecutor Joseph R. Burkhard revealed he will not
make any recommendation as to prison time in the case as
part of the plea deal but will recommend community control
sanctions and a $1,000 fine. Strunkenburgs guilty plea was
to two fifth-degree felony charges of prohibitions concerning
companion animals, which carry a maximum sentence of up
to 12 months in prison for each count. Burkhard also said the
remaining two counts filed against Strunkenburg would be
dismissed. The judge is not bound to follow the prosecutors
recommendations.
The charges stem from a Van Wert Sheriffs Office investigation after an anonymous complaint was made in July to
the office about conditions at the animal shelter on Bonnewitz
Avenue. Strunkenburg was immediately placed on administrative leave and was dismissed by Van Wert County
Commissioners on July 31. The commissioners related that
the animals at the shelter had not been given sufficient food or
water and that there were dead animals present at the facility.
Strunkenburg remained free on bond after Wednesdays hearing.

Veterans court ready to launch in northwest Ohio

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) A
court dedicated to helping get
treatment instead of jail time for
veterans facing legal trouble is set
2 to begin taking on cases in early
3 January.
The goal of the veterans court,
4
which
will operate within Toledos
5
Municipal Court, is to address under6 lying issues such as post-traumatic
7 stress disorder for veterans who are
8 charged with misdemeanors.
9
Those veterans going through the
10 court must plead guilty or no contest
before they can get treatment.
There are four other veterans
courts in Ohio: Hamilton County

Court of Common Pleas, Mansfield

Veteran Treatment Court, Stark
County Veterans Treatment Court
and Youngstown Veterans Treatment
Court.
The first day in Toledos court is
scheduled for Jan. 16. Organizers
have contacted police and corrections officials to find veterans who
might qualify, The Blade reported.
The court will meet at least twice
a month.
Judge William Connelly, who
will preside over the court, has
spent time trying to understand
how the trauma of war can lead
to trouble with the law at home.

He watched a video of American

servicemen driving a Humvee
through Baghdad, stopping for
nothing despite heavy traffic and
obstacles to avoid potential danger.
The video then showed a veteran at
home speeding through a construction zone, growing tense in the
restricted space.
He felt trapped, paralyzed,
Connelly said. He called it an eyeopening experience to the triggers
that can agitate veterans struggling
to readjust.
Veterans courts target veterans
who are at high risk of being repeat
offenders if their underlying issues

are not addressed, said Melody

Powers, a Veteran Justice Outreach
Coordinator for the Veterans Affairs
Ann Arbor Healthcare System in
Michigan.
Most offenses are directly related to their time in service or mental
health, Powers said.
Close supervision is important
because judges are putting trust in
Veterans Affairs to provide resources and treatment instead of sentencing, she said.
Many participants say it was the
best thing to ever happen to them,
she said. Ive never seen people
look forward to coming to court.

For the Beatles, writing songs was a process that could
happen anytime songs we all know by heart often began as
a scribble on the back of an envelope or on hotel stationery.
These original documents have ended up scattered across the
world at museums and universities and with collectors and
friends. Many have never been published before. More than
100 songs and lyrics are reproduced in The Beatles Lyrics,
providing Hunter Davies a unique platform to tell the story
of the music.
The intimacy of these reproductions there are sections
crossed out and rewritten, and words tossed into the final
recordings that were never written down ensures that The
Beatles Lyrics will be a treasure for musicians, scholars, and
fans everywhere
Dreamers and Deceivers by Glenn Beck
Everyone has heard of a Ponzi scheme, but do you know
what Charles Ponzi actually did to make his name synonymous with fraud? Credit for inventing radio usually goes to
Marconi or David Sarnoff and RCAbut if youve never
heard of Edwin Armstrong or Lee de Forest, you know only
half the story.
Youve probably been to a
Disney theme park, but did you
know that the park Walt believed
would change the world was actually EPCOT? He died before his
vision for it could ever be realized. History is about so much
more than dates and dead guys; its
the greatest story ever told. Now,
in this powerful follow-up to his
national bestseller Miracles and
Massacres, Glenn Beck brings 10
more true and untold stories to life.
The people who made America
were not always what they seemed.
There were entrepreneurs and visionaries whose selflessness
propelled us forward, but there were also charlatans and
fraudsters whose selfishness nearly derailed us. Dreamers
and Deceivers bring both of these groups to life with stories
written to put you right in the middle of the action. You know
that Woodrow Wilson was a progressive who dramatically
changed America, but did you know that he was also involved
in one of the most shocking national deceptions of all time?
You know I Love Lucy, but the true story of Desi Arnaz and
Lucille Ball is much better than anything they produced for
television. Youve heard of Upton Sinclair, the socialist author
who gained famed with The Jungle, but it was a book he
wrote two decades later that proved the depths he was willing
to go to maintain his reputation.

Minimum wage in Ohio

increases 15 cents an hour
COLUMBUS (AP)
Ohios minimum wage has
gone up by 15 cents an hour
with the beginning of the
New Year to $8.10.
The increase also takes the
minimum wage of workers
who receive tips up 7 cents to
$4.05 an hour.
Policy Matters Ohio, a
non-partisan organization that
studies Ohios economy, says

the increase will boost the

wages of more than 277,000
Ohio workers.
The group estimates the
wage increases will produce
$36 million in economic
growth from higher consumer
spending.
Voters in Ohio approved
a constitutional amendment
in 2006 that calls for annual
increases in the hourly wage.

living in Rhode Island during the Blizzard of 1978. It begins

with the children noticing the first snowflakes outside their
classroom window and ends when the snow plows finally
appear at the end of the block signaling the end of their forced
hibernation. Of course, the children are thrilled, at first, to
have to climb out a window to get out the house, but eventually food begins to run out and thats when the narrator becomes
the neighborhood hero, trudging to the store on home-made
snow shoes pulling his sled behind.

unintended consequences.

Fiction
The Escape by David Baldacci
The Escape, its a prison unlike any other. Military discipline rules. Its security systems are unmatched. None of its
prisoners dream of escaping. They know its impossible
until now.
John Pullers older brother, Robert, was convicted of treason and national security crimes. His inexplicable escape from
prison makes him the most wanted criminal in the country.
Some in the government believe Puller represents their best
chance at capturing Robert alive, and so Puller must bring in
his brother to face justice.
But Puller quickly discovers his brother is pursued by others who dont want him to survive. Puller is in turn pushed
into an uneasy, fraught partnership with another agent, who
may have an agenda of her own.
They dig more deeply into the case together, and Puller
finds that not only are her allegiances unclear, but there are
troubling details about his brothers conviction and someone out there doesnt want the truth to ever come to light.
As the nationwide manhunt for Robert grows more urgent,
Pullers masterful skills as an investigator and strengths as a
fighter may not be enough to save his brother-or himself.
Murder Tightly Knit by Vanetta Chapman
Even before she heard of Owen Eschs death, Hannah
Troyer knew something was amiss at The Cats Meow yarn
shop. The store has been closing at odd times, the everdependable Mary isnt always at her post and an English
man has been seen loitering around back.
Now, as leaves of brown, gold, and orange blanket
Middlebury, Indiana, Owen lies dead on the Pumpkinvine
Trail. The only clues to the murderers identity point in two
very different directionsone of them leading right to The
Cats Meow.
The police call in
a federal investigator,
but Hannah and Village
Manager Amber Bowman
are in no mood to wait
for them to figure out what
they already knowthat no
one from the Amish Village
could have killed Owen
Esch.
Amber and Hannah will
need to work quickly to
solve the murder mystery
and bring harmony back to
the Amish community.
Confessions: The Paris Mysteries by James Patterson
and Maxine Paetro
Number three in the Confessions series takes Pattersons
teen detective, Tandy Angel, to the City of Lights for a bit
both romance and another family mystery. The story starts
with an amazing kiss in the middle of the city, but quickly
twists to become a fast-paced story involving a locked room,
suspicions about her boyfriend and new information about her
sisters death. As the story unravels, Tandy has to decide who
to trust while faced with enemies of her family who might
want her dead, too. While this novel could be a stand-alone
book, its probably best to read them in order to understand the
family better. Other books include, Confessions of a Murder
Suspect and The Private School Murders.
Ketchup Clouds by Annabel Pitcher
It seems like when someone gets away with murder, they
just cant live with the secret. Thats the case for the lead
character in the book, Zoe. She lives in England and at the
prompting of her teacher, she writes to a prisoner on death row
in America. Zoe (not her real name) feels like only a criminal
could relate to her guilt about what she did. The interesting
part about this book is that while readers know who the murderer is from the first chapter, the victim isnt known until
close to the end of the book. So, while Zoe shares details of
her life including her grandparents, her boyfriends and her
deaf little sister, with the inmate, her story, told in letters,
leaves readers wondering who she killed and why.

2014 is the bloody year of the Islamic State

Soon after his elevation to the Chair of St.

Peter, Pope Francis warned that the world was
entering a time when Satan would increasingly show his power, especially in lands in
which believers were being crushed.
Looking toward a rising storm in the
Middle East, he warned that the persecution
of religious minorities is a sign of the end
times.
It will be like the triumph of the prince
of this world: the defeat of God. It seems
that in that final moment of calamity, he will
take possession of this world, that he will be
the master of this world, said Pope Francis.
Religion cannot be spoken of, it is something
private, no?
A year later, the pope was even more specific in a letter to churches in the ancient lands
of the Bible.
I write to you just before Christmas,
knowing that for many of you the music of
your Christmas hymns will also be accompanied by tears and sighs. Nonetheless, the birth
of the Son of God in our human flesh is an
indescribable mystery of consolation, said
Pope Francis.
Sadly, afflictions and tribulations have
not been lacking, even more recently, in the
Middle East. They have been aggravated
in the past months because of the continuing hostilities in the region, but especially
because of the work of a newer and disturbing

Religion
terrorist organization, of previously unimaginable dimensions, which has perpetrated all
kinds of abuses and inhuman acts. It has particularly affected a number of you, who have
been brutally driven out of your native lands,
where Christians have been present since
apostolic times.
Pope Francis was, of course, referring to
the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria
-- a reign of death and destruction that was
selected as the years top religion news story
by members of the Religion Newswriters
Association. And once again, Pope Francis
was selected as Religion Newsmaker of the
Year.
Here is the rest of the RNA Top 10 list,
which included several ties:
2. The Supreme Court, in another 5-4 decision, rules that two closely held companies
-- Hobby Lobby and Conestoga -- can claim
religious objections to the Affordable Care

Act mandate requiring most religious institutions to offer employees, and often students,
health-insurance plans covering sterilizations
and all FDA-approved contraceptives, including morning-after pills.
3. A rapid deterioration of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict includes the kidnappings
and murders of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, amid increasing tensions over access to
the Temple Mount. This includes an IsraelHamas war that leaves more than 2,000 dead
and a hellish attack on rabbis at prayer in a
synagogue. (TIE) Pope Francis continues his
efforts to reach out to the needy, to marginalized Catholics and to people of other faiths.
4. Liberal Protestants continue to move
toward full acceptance of same-sex marriage
and the ordination of noncelibate gay and
lesbian clergy.
5. Health care workers, many of them missionaries or activists from faith-based groups,
courageously carry on with their work during
the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
6. A broad coalition of Catholics, mainline
Protestants and some evangelicals, especially
in Latino congregations, celebrate President
Barack Obamas executive action on immigration reform.
7. Pakistani Muslim Malala Yousafzai
-- still recovering from Taliban gunshots
in retaliation for her work supporting the
education of girls -- shares the 2014 Nobel

Prize with childrens rights activist Kailash

Satyarthi, a Hindu from India.
8. Clergy and other activists from faithbased groups help support peaceful protests
against racial injustice in Ferguson, Missouri,
both before and after a grand jury fails to
indict police officer Darren Wilson in the fatal
shooting of Michael Brown. Similar protests
take place in New York, after another case in
which an unarmed black man died in an altercation with white officers.
9. After years of debate, the Church of
England votes to allow women bishops. For
the first time, women lead three of Americas
major mainline Protestant churches, and the
U.S. Navy names its first female head chaplain.
10. India elects Hindu nationalist Narendra
Modi as prime minister, creating tensions with
the lands religious minorities. (TIE) Movie
critics proclaim 2014 as The Year of the
Bible after the latest wave of films centering on events in the Bible -- from Noah to the
Exodus and on to the Rapture -- or focusing
on other religious themes.

Sweet as Sugar: Buckeyes upset Alabama

By BRETT MARTEL and DHI
Media Staff Reports
AP Sports Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Ezekiel Elliott broke

free for an 85-yard touchdown run with 3:24 to play,
as the fourth-ranked Buckeyes shocked the topranked Crimson Tide 42-35 in the Allstate Sugar
Bowl on Thursday night.
Ohio State advanced to the championship game
in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 12 against Oregon. The
Ducks pummeled Florida State 59-20 on Thursday
at the Rose Bowl.
Ohio State took over on their own 5-yard line
with 5:24 to play in the game, leading by six and
having been pinned deep yet again by a strong
Alabama punting game. With the Tide down to two
timeouts, Ohio State could put the game away by
moving the chains a few times.
Instead, Elliott simply put the game away himself.
Alabama answered Elliotts score when Amari
Cooper caught a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:57
to play. The Tide tried an onside kick, but the ball
was recovered by the Buckeyes. After a 3-and-out
gave the ball back to Alabama, a late interception
sealed the victory.
Quarterback Cardale Jones had accounted for
305 yards from scrimmage, defensive end Steve

Miller returned an interception 41 yards for a score,

and Ohio State led Alabama 34-28 after the third
quarter of the College Football Playoff semifinal.
Throwing deep and scrambling effectively,
Jones had 243 yards passing, including
a 47-yard scoring strike to Devin Smith,
along with 62 yards rushing.
In the fourth quarter, however,
Alabamas defense made a stand, forcing
three consecutive Buckeye punts to open
the period. They did so by bringing pressure against the Ohio State signal-caller
making just his second career start.
The Tide offense could not take
advantage, however. Trailing by six and
getting the ball at Ohio States 22, Tide
quarterback Blake Sims looked deep,
but his pass was intercepted, giving the
ball back to the Buckeyes.
Jones was poised in the face of
Alabama coach Nick Sabans defense,
helping the Buckeyes to surge into the
lead after a pair of costly first-half turnovers had put Ohio State in a 21-6 hole.
Millers interception return of Sims
pass to the left flat capped 28 straight
points to give Ohio State a 34-21 lead.
The Crimson Tide then responded with Sims
5-yard scoring run, set up by Derrick Henrys

Oregon crushes FSU 59-20

Associated Press
PASADENA, Calif.
Marcus Mariota and Oregon
turned an avalanche of Florida
State mistakes into a mountain
of points and the Ducks rolled
past the defending national
champions 59-20 Thursday to
turn the first College Football
Playoff semifinal into a Rose
Bowl rout.
Mariota and the secondseeded Ducks (13-1) scored
five straight times when they
touched the ball in the second
half, with each touchdown
covering at least 21 yards
and the last four coming after
Florida State turnovers.
In the matchup of Heisman
Trophy winners, Jameis
Winston matched Mariotas
numbers but the defending
national champions were no
match for the Ducks. The
Pac-12 champions will play
the winner of the Sugar Bowl
semifinal between Alabama

and Ohio State on Jan. 12 in

Arlington, Texas.
Third-seeded
Florida
States winning streak ends at
29. In Winstons first loss as a
college starter, maybe his last
game in collee, he threw for
348 yards.

COTTON BOWL
NO. 7, MICHIGAN STATE 42,
BAYLOR 41
ARLINGTON, Texas Connor
Cook threw a 10-yard touchdown
pass to Keith Mumphery with 17
seconds left to cap a 3-touchdown
fourth-quarter comeback in No. 7
Michigan States 42-41 victory over
playoff-snubbed Baylor on Thursday
in the Cotton Bowl.
The Spartans (11-2) got the winning touchdown after Marcus Rush
blocked Chris Callahans 43-yard
field goal attempt with 1:05 left.
When Baylor (11-2) got the ball
back for one last try, Bryce Petty
was sacked on consecutive plays
before Riley Bulloughs clinching
interception.
Petty completed 36 of 51 passes for a Cotton Bowl-record 550
yards and three touchdowns, two to
speedy freshman KD Cannon and

the other to 390-pount backup guard

LaQuan McGowan that put Baylor
up 41-21 late in the third quarter.
Jeremy Langford ran for 162
yards and three touchdowns for the
Spartans, whose losses were to
Pac-12 winner Oregon and the Big
Ten champion Ohio State.
Langfords 1-yard plunge with
just under 5 minutes left got the
Spartans to 41-35. That came the
play after Cooks 11-yard scramble
was initially called a touchdown but
ruled short after a replay review.
Callahan had a 46-yard field
goal attempt that ricocheted off the
right upright to start the fourth quarter. Michigan State then got Cooks
8-yard TD pass to tight end Josiah
Price and recovered an onside kick.
Cook threw a 39-yard pass on the
first play after the recovery but was
scrambling to avoid pressure on the
next when threw an awkward pass
right to linebacker Taylor Young, who
ran 84 yards to the end zone.
Youngs apparent touchdown
was wiped out by an illegal block,
pushing Baylor back to its 43. After
Pettys fourth-down incompletion,
Michigan State went 60 yards in
nine plays for Langfords final score

52-yard gain on a reception out of the backfield.

Henry gave Alabama its first lead on 25-yard
run shortly after Ezekiel Elliotts fumble in the
first quarter. Cyrus Jones interception and 32-yard
return of Cardale Jones pass led to T.J.
Yeldons 2-yard score. In between, Sims
hit Amari Cooper for a 15-yard touchdown strike for Alabama (12-2).
In addition to hurting its cause with
turnovers, Ohio State settled for field
goals the first two times it drove inside
the 10.
But the Buckeyes (13-1) kept coming and cut Bamas lead to a single
point with 12 seconds left in the half
on a trick play featuring receiver Evan
Spencers 13-yard pass to Michael
Thomas, who made a difficult leaping
touchdown catch as he twisted in the
air and narrowly touched one foot in
bounds.
Elliott, who rushed for 139 yards
through three quarters, scored on a
3-yard run for Ohio State, which had
outgained Alabama 464 yards to 269
heading into the fourth quarter.
Ohio State struck first after Elliott stiff-armed
cornerback Eddie Jackson to get the corner on the
right sideline and then hurdled Landon Collins to

break loose for a 54-yard gain to the 5.

The Crimson Tide did not allow another yard on
the next three plays, forcing the Buckeyes to settle
for Sean Nuernbergers short field goal.
Alabama, the top seed and Southeastern
Conference champion, punted after three plays
on its first two series. But Jackson and Collins
redeemed themselves for their failure to make
a tackle on Elliots long run on Ohio States
next possession. Jackson punched the ball out of
Elliotts grasp during a run to the right side, and
Collins made the scoop and short return to the
Ohio State 33. Henry scored two plays later.
The Buckeyes were in position to regain the
lead after Devin Smiths 40-yard catch to the
Alabama 1. But Jones bobbled a shotgun snap on
the next play and was brought down by Collins
for an 8-yard loss. Again, Ohio State was unable
to get in the end zone, and Nuernbergers second
field goal made it 7-6.
Alabama was trying to win its fourth national
title under Saban since the 2009 season.
The Buckeyes, the Big Ten champions, have
won 12 straight and gained their first official bowl
victory against a team from the Southeastern
Conference. Ohio State came in 0-10 against the
league in the postseason, having vacated a 2011
triumph over Arkansas because of NCAA violations.

2014 an eventful for

good or ill year for NFL
JIM METCALFE

Metcalfes
Musings

By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
The end of 2014 has come and gone
without fanfare yeah, right! and
we have witnessed the beginning of 2015
without a hitch!
And I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell
you! Cheap!
The end of a calendar year always
brings reflections and resolutions.
I have resolved to make no resolutions
in 2015 because they only last for about
36.5 hours, anyway.

The world of sports had its share of

good and bad as always.
It seems that the bad always has more
staying power. Maybe that goes along
with the truth that good news doesnt sell
newspapers.
Think of it. There has always been an
issue about concussions in the NFL but
not even close to the level we saw it reach
in 2014.
What happened in 2014 that was disconcerting is that is has filtered down into
colleges and even the lowest levels of Pop
Warner.
A player that made a living in this sport
is one thing I think deep down, they had
an idea that the sport could have lifelong
repercussions but they continued to play
the sport they loved.
But those who only play for a relatively short time perhaps from midgets
through their senior years that has to be
a concern for all involved in the sport.
I think football was inalterably changed
in 2014 because of that fact alone. Maybe
I have written about this before my

110,342 fans can tell me if I have! but

the sporting landscape has changed forever and will continue to do so in the next
few years.
We know and I have heard of parents
maybe not many but it doesnt take
many at first that have chosen to keep
their boys from playing football from the
beginning or at any time along the way
because of these inherent dangers.
Not many becomes a few more, than a
few more after that and then many.
I think you will see more than a few
schools I wont name names but you
and I both know of schools that have
struggled with numbers for years before
this either consolidate or simply give up
the sport altogether.
I have spoken of this on other platforms
and I think that, for example, soccer will
be a sport to watch at the high school
level in the next few years because kids
will want to participant in something of a
physical nature and it wont be playing
chess!
By the way: I was known to play chess
reasonably well in my younger days!
I digress.
Another example: the issue of domestic
violence has forced its way into the forefront of the NFL scene.
I was talking with a friend of mine the
other day we both can remember some
of the good old days and in those
days, this issue seemed to be accepted
as a natural consequence of a violent and
rough-and-tumble sport.
Sad, really, that it took this long.
We shall see what 2015 has in store for
The True National Pastime!
Depending on what the NFL and its
players union does in regards to this and
all other issues it is facing, we could see
the NFL flourish even more as a beacon or
we could start seeing its decline.
After all, Mark Cuban more or less told
the NFL the same thing in early 2014 in
essence, its not too big to fail if it is not
careful and keep a sharp eye of the horizon
and the rear-view mirror.
Happy belated New Year, everybody.

DEAR ABBY: I
am recently divorced
and now seeing a
wonderful
woman
who is pretty much
everything I was
looking for except
for a couple of issues,
which concern going

do often. Not once
has she offered to pay
for a meal.
I
make

money, but she is not
financially strapped
by any means. While
I can live with her not
paying, what annoys
me is she rarely says
thank you after a
dinner date. Once,

she ordered a togo selection to take

home to her daughter.
I paid for it, but again
got no thanks. When
we arrived at her
house, she gave the
food to her daughter
without mentioning I
had bought it for her.
Other than her
manners, shes a
great gal and Im
happy were together.
Am I being petty and
overly
sensitive?
My ex-wife never
appreciated me, so
its a sore spot. How
should I approach this
without jeopardizing
everything
else?
-- HESITANT TO
SPEAK UP IN THE
MIDWEST
D
E
A
R
HESITANT: Your
great gal has poor
manners. Approach
it by telling her
exactly what you
have written to me.
Then ask her why she
never says thank you
and didnt bother to
give you credit when
you did something

nice for her daughter.

Either this woman
never learned basic
manners, or she takes
you for granted. And
if this is a pattern with
all the women in your
life, its important
you understand why
and do something
about it before you
marry again or you
will never be happy.
DEAR ABBY: I
stepped into a public
restroom with three
regular stalls and a
handicap/wheelchairaccessible
stall.
All the stalls were
occupied, so I got
in line. By the time
it was my turn,
the
handicapped
stall was available.
Behind me was a
mother with a fussy
baby and a toddler,
and she needed
to use the baby
changing
station,
which happened to
be located inside the
handicapped stall. I
let her go first.
What I didnt
realize was a woman

in a wheelchair was
also in line behind
me. She got upset
when I let someone
else use the stall
instead of allowing
her. Someone else in
line piped up and told
her she had to wait
in line like everyone
else.
When situations
like this arise, should
disabled people be
allowed to skip the
line and go straight
to the big stall? Even
if the mother with
the baby and the
location of a diaper
changing
station
were not a factor, is
the right thing to do
to let a wheelchairbound person use the
restroom first, even if
he/she is at the end of
the line? -- TRYING
TO BE POLITE
DEAR TRYING:
Yes, it is. Its called
a
handicapped
stall for a reason.
The person with the
disability
should
have been allowed to
use it first -- even if

he/she was at the end

of the line.
DEAR ABBY: I
have two children
from a previous
marriage. We have a
distant relationship.
For valid reasons,
they
have
been
written out of my will.
Should I tell them
now, or let them find
out after my death?
-WONDERING

WONDERING:
I see no reason to
announce it now,
because before you
die you might change
your mind.

Just how lazy can we get?

Hearth and Home

of Van Wert

An old maple tree blew over on our lawn

during the last storm, and Ive been chopping it
up with a chainsaw. After an hourlong session, I
sat down completely exhausted and not close to
being finished. How did they ever do this in the
old days with handsaws and axes?
How did our ancestors ever get anything
done without all our modern technology? How
did lumberjacks get through the day without
massage chairs and hot tubs? How did Julius
Caesar conquer Gaul without the benefit of
rehydrating power drinks and One-a-Day
vitamins for men? How did the cowboys of
the Old West ever get by without sunblock
and Cialis? How did Dolley Madison save the
White House furniture without being able to put
it on Facebook and then tweet all about it?
I spoke to a friend who works in a big office
in the city yesterday, and she said 11 people
in her office were out with things like chronic
fatigue syndrome, carpal tunnel and workplace
allergies. Everyone else is on Prozac. Can
pushing around a computer mouse all day really
be more stressful than, say, having to spin your
own yarn and weave your own cloth? Or having
to kill, clean and pluck chickens for dinner?
How did we humans ever get through all
those years before there were power tools, WalMart, KFC and Downton Abbey?
Today we complain about driving to work
in a nice, warm car while listening to Pandora
and drinking a Starbucks latte. Our great-greatgrandfathers would have had to saddle a horse
and hitch up a buggy before even thinking
about going to town. A 15-mile trip there and
back would eat up an entire day. The luxury
and comfort of one of todays least expensive
automobiles would shock him.
Bucket seats? Well, Ill be durned. Wait

Q: Were Tupperware containers ever sold in

stores before the home party began? -- S.L.S.,
Roanoke, Va.
A: The unique containers were invented
by and named for Earl Tupper (1907-1983)
in 1946. The containers were originally sold
in stores and by mail. In 1948, the company
introduced the Tupperware Home Party to
demonstrate how the products worked. In
1951, all Tupperware products were removed
from stores.
Q: My nephew is constantly running,
jumping and yelling Cowabunga! I know
he got it from the Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles. Cowabunga sounds like a familiar
word from my past. Can you help? -- J.L.M.,
Redding, Calif.
A: Cowabunga was the nonsensical
greeting exchanged by Buffalo Bob Smith and
Chief Thunderthud on TVs Howdy Doody.
Its use spread through the Gidget surfer
movies, starring Sandra
Dee, and later the Peanuts
comic strip.
Q:
Richard
Dean
Anderson played the role
of MacGyver in the TV
series of the same name.
What was MacGyvers
first name? -- R.T., Evans
City, Pa.
A:
The
characters
full name was Angus Richard Dean
Anderson
MacGyver. The show aired
from 1985 to 1992.
Q: What was the name of Popeyes ship? -K.M.W., Sarasota, Fla.
A: His ship is named The Olive.
Q: Where was the State of Franklin in the
United States? Im reading a novel and it is
mentioned. I assume its made up. -- F.A.I.,
Cape May, N.J.
A: Its not made up. After the Revolutionary
War, the original colonies were asked to help
pay for the cost of the war. North Carolina
had neither the money nor the ability to tax
the people in the western portion of the state,
and it gladly ceded the land to the Federal
government. In 1784, residents of this area
established the State of Franklin, but four
years later, the idea was abandoned because of
the lack of support of Congress. The area was
merged with Tennessee.
Q: When was the pull-tab can patented? -G.O., Woburn, Mass.
A: Ermal Cleon Fraze received a patent
for his invention in 1959. Sixteen years later,
Continental Can Co. created a non-removable
tab. Fraze died in 1989 at the age of 76.
Q: A vegan is a vegetarian who eats no
animal products. What about a person, such as
myself, who eats dairy products, plus fish and
chicken? -- U.J.K., New Orleans
A: You would be a flexitarian or semivegetarian. Semi-vegetarians will sometimes
eat meat byproducts such as fats, oils and
gelatin and wear clothing from animals.
Q: What was the name of the talking
Chihuahua in the Taco Bell TV commercials?
-- I.M.W., Lafayette, La.
A: Her name was Gidget.
Q: In mythology, what has the body of a lion,
head of a man and tail of a dragon? -- F.G.,
Hurricane, Utah
A: Just your common, everyday manticore.
Q: What is the highest peak in Canada? -Y.N., Glenview, Calif.
A: At approximately 19,551 feet (the exact
elevation is still unknown because of tectonic
uplifting), Mount Logan is the highest peak
in Canada and the second highest in North
America. Located in the Yukon Territory in
the St. Elias Mountains near the Alaska border,
the peak was named in 1891 after Sir William
Edmond Logan, a Canadian geologist and
founder of the Geological Survey of Canada.

we use power steering and power brakes.
Would he be sympathetic if I tell him Im
coming down with Remote Control Hand caused
by the repetitive motion of changing the TV
channels over and over? Or I have Pop Top Finger
from opening too many beers in one weekend?
Or I suffer the agony of Texting Thumb?
The amount of physical work our ancient
ancestors had to do would surely kill most us if
we had to do it today. Try to imagine life without
a dishwasher, a vacuum cleaner, a water heater,
an air conditioner, a refrigerator, a freezer, a
TV, a cellphone. Whoops, did I say ancient?
I meant a single lifetime ago (if youre really,
really old. Like 55).
Remember Princess phones? When they
first came out, there was a big debate about
the wisdom of letting teenagers have their
own phones -- in their own rooms! The end
of the world was predicted several times over
this apocalyptic event. So let me ask: Do you
even know a teenager without their own phone
today? Even grade school kids have them.
All the cooking shows on TV talk about
dinners you can make in 20 minutes or less.
None of their recipes start with things like
churn some butter or fire up the cook stove
or collect six eggs from the coop out back.
It is within living memory that no kitchen had
a fridge or a freezer, a microwave or a food
processor. Or running water.
Howd you like that hot shower this morning?
Nice, right? Were so used to indoor plumbing,
(Send your questions to Mr. Know-It-All

In with the
new: Snappy
apps for 2015
NEW YORK (AP) Uber,
Facebook, Instagram sure,
theyve been all the rage, but
as 2014 winds down were all
ready for something fresh. From
ride-hailing to photo sharing,
here are a few up-and coming
apps and startups to watch in in
2015. Which will be the breakout hit of the new year?
TELL A STORY
Instagram, which is owned
by Facebook Inc., now has
300 million users more
than Twitter. Scrolling through
its snapshot feeds gives users
a quick glimpse into the lives
of friends and strangers. (At
least the parts that include
empty beaches, cappuccinos with perfect foam hearts
and smiling babies in clean
clothes.) Its simplicity is part
of its appeal. But what if you
want to tell a longer story?
Enter Storehouse, a mobile
app that promises to let you
share your stories, as they
happen. Instead of sharing
one-off photos, Storehouse
lets users combine photos,
videos and words to share
anything from a detailed recipe, to travel memories or a
first-person documentary on
the Yakuza. Storehouse was
founded by Mark Kawano,
who previously worked at
Apple as a User Experience
Evangelist, helping developers design iOS and Mac apps.
COOK A MEAL
New DIY services will provide carefully measured ingredients and detailed recipes for
even the clumsiest of cooks.
Sites such as HelloFresh,
Plated and Blue Apron deliver
weekly boxes of raw ingredients even including spices
and, at least in the case of
HelloFresh, water. The only
things youre assumed to have
in your pantry are salt, pepper, oil and possibly butter.
An upcoming family plan
box for Blue Apron, for example, features chicken under
a brick with rosemary,
roast potatoes and broccolini;
New England-style shrimp
rolls with warm potato and
kale salad; fresh pappardelle
Bolognese with romaine,
celery and apple salad and
two-cheese pizza with iceberg
chopped salad. The meals are
quick to prepare, so if youre
tired of takeout and live in
their delivery location, these
services could spice up your
diet. Or maybe help with that
eat-healthy New Years resolution?
CHIT CHAT
Youve heard of WhatsApp,
the nearly-free messaging app
that Facebook paid $22 billion for this year. And theres
Facebooks own messaging
tool, which was the years
most-downloaded app (likely
because you had to download
it if you wanted to message
people using Facebook).
Thats all so 2014. Why
message people you know
when you could instead check
out Ethan, a messaging app
that lets you do just one thing
message a guy named
Ethan. He may message you
time to time but cautions that
he cant respond when hes
asleep. Nothing if not honest, Ethan doesnt want you to
message him in an emergency,
and will advise you not to fall
in love with him. But want
to plan a dinner-and-movie
night? No problem. Should
I get Italian or Chinese for
dinner? (Answer: Italian)
and Gonna watch a movie
on Netflix, what should I go
for? (Answer: The Room.)

Testing anti-drinking drug with help of a fake bar

WASHINGTON (AP) The tequila sure looks
real, so do the beer taps. Inside the hospital at the
National Institutes of Health, researchers are testing a possible new treatment to help heavy drinkers
cut back using a replica of a fully stocked bar.
The idea: Sitting in the dimly lit bar-laboratory
should cue the volunteers brains to crave a drink,
and help determine if the experimental pill counters
that urge.
True, theres no skunky bar odor; these bottles
are filled with colored water. The real alcohol is
locked in the hospital pharmacy, ready to send over
for the extra temptation of smell and to test how
safe the drug is if people drink anyway.
The goal is to create almost a real-world environment, but to control it very strictly, said lead
researcher Dr. Lorenzo Leggio, who is testing how
a hormone named ghrelin that sparks peoples
appetite for food also affects their desire for alcohol, and if blocking it helps.
Amid all the yearly resolutions to quit, alcohol
use disorders affect about 17 million Americans,
and only a small fraction receives treatment.
Theres no one-size-fits-all therapy, and the NIH is
spurring a hunt for new medications that target the
brains addiction cycle in different ways and to
find out which options work best in which drinkers.
Alcoholics come in many forms, explained
Dr. George Koob, director of NIHs National
Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, which
has published new online guides, at www.niaaa.
nih.gov, explaining whos at risk and what can
help.

Whats the limit? NIAAA says low-risk drinking means no more than four drinks in any single
day and no more than 14 in a week for men, and
no more than three drinks a day and seven a week
for women.
Genes play a role in whos vulnerable to crossing the line into alcohol abuse. So do environmental factors, such as getting used to drinking a certain amount, not to mention how your own brains
circuitry adapts.
Treatment can range from inpatient rehab and
12-step programs to behavioral therapy and the few
medications available today. Koob, who specializes
in the neurobiology of alcohol, says it usually takes
a combination and ultimately, you have to change
your life.
Yet a recent review for the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality estimated that less than a
third of people who need treatment get it, and of
those, less than 10 percent receive medications.
Three drugs are approved by the Food and
Drug Administration to treat alcohol abuse. One,
naltrexone, blocks alcohols feel-good sensation
by targeting receptors in the brains reward system
if people harbor a particular gene. The anticraving pill acamprosate appears to calm stressrelated brain chemicals in certain people. The older
Antabuse works differently, triggering nausea and
other aversive symptoms if people drink while taking it.
Recent research suggests a handful of drugs
used for other disorders also show promise:
Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute

found the epilepsy drug gabapentin reduced relapses in drinkers whod recently quit, and improved
cravings, mood and sleep by targeting an emotionrelated brain chemical.
A study by NIAAA and five medical centers
found the anti-smoking drug Chantix may help
alcohol addiction, too, by reducing heavy drinkers
cravings.
And University of Pennsylvania researchers
found the epilepsy drug topiramate helped heavy
drinkers cut back, if they have a particular gene
variation mostly found in people of European
descent.
Back in NIHs bar lab, one of about a dozen
versions around the country, the focus is on ghrelin,
the hormone produced in the stomach that controls
appetite via receptors in the brain. It turns out
theres overlap between receptors that fuel overeating and alcohol craving in the brains reward
system, explained NIAAAs Leggio.
In a study published this fall, his team gave
45 heavy-drinking volunteers different doses of
ghrelin, and their urge to drink rose along with the
extra hormone.
Now Leggio is testing whether blocking ghrelins action also blocks those cravings, using an
experimental Pfizer drug originally developed for
diabetes but never sold. The main goal of this firststep study is to ensure mixing alcohol with the drug
is safe. But researchers also measure cravings as
volunteers, hooked to a blood pressure monitor in
the tiny bar-lab, smell a favorite drink. Initial safety
results are expected this spring.

2015 begins: Shanghai
menu
labeling
tragedy, fireworks elsewhere
Associated Press
Revelers crowded New Yorks Times
Square and converged on the beaches of
Brazil and skyscrapers of Dubai to say
good riddance to a turbulent 2014 marred
by terror woes, Ebola outbreaks and a
horrific series of airline disasters.
But tragedy struck in Shanghai,
Baghdad was on edge and protesters in
the United States delivered a sobering
reminder of one of the years biggest
stories.
A look around the world:
STAMPEDE IN SHANGHAI
Thirty-six people were killed in a
stampede during New Years celebrations
in downtown Shanghai, city officials said.
The deaths the worst disaster to hit
one of Chinas showcase cities in years
occurred a half-hour before midnight at Shanghais popular riverfront
Bund area, which can be jammed with
spectators for major events. A Shanghai
government statement said Thursday that
another 47 people were receiving hospital treatment, including 13 who were
seriously injured.
The official Xinhua News Agency
quoted an unnamed witness as saying
people had scrambled for coupons that
looked like dollar bills that were being
thrown out of a third-floor window. It
said the cause of the stampede was under
investigation.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

A million people crammed into New
Yorks Times Square welcomed the new
year with kisses, hugs and cheers after
the giant, Waterford crystal ball dropped
at midnight and a ton of confetti rained
down.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, flanked by his
wife and two children, pushed the ceremonial button that set the 11,875-pound
glittering ball in motion. Revelers from
around the world waving pink balloons
and wearing pink foam hats exchanged
good wishes and danced as Frank
Sinatras New York, New York blared
on loudspeakers.
Agustina Bernacchia, a tourist from
Argentina, had arrived early to secure her
spot. She said she wanted to experience
the New Years Eve party shed always
seen on TV.
It was a dream for us, Bernacchia
said.

SHIVERING IN THE NEW YEAR

New Years Eve revelers in bunny
costumes the corsets and fishnets kind
and designer suits walking down the
Vegas strip Wednesday night had scarves

wrapped around their necks against temperatures expected to drop into the 20s.
Occasional flurries fell, but none stuck
around long enough to be snow.
Laura Mayo of Las Vegas was wearing a plush fur coat, but not shivering
bunny Rechelle Sheridan. It takes away
from the costume, the 25-year-old city
resident said.
Synchronized bursts of color shot from
the rooftops of seven casino-hotels along
the Las Vegas Strip as fireworks filled the
sky, ushering in the new year. The Las
Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority
had said it expected about 340,000 people
to attend.

WATCHING THE BALL OR

WHATEVER DROP
The ball drop is a tradition thats being
increasingly copied across the United
States with twists celebrating local icons.
Among the items being dropped: a
big chili in Las Cruces, New Mexico; a
replica peach in Atlanta; a musical note
in Nashville, Tennessee; a large pine
cone in Flagstaff, Arizona; an oversized spurred cowboy boot in Prescott,
Arizona; a 600-pound (270-kilogram)
walleye made of wood and fiberglass
in Port Clinton, Ohio; an 80-pound
(36-kilogram) wedge of cheese in
Plymouth, Wisconsin; and in Escanaba,
in Michigans Upper Peninsula, a replica of a pasty a baked pastry filled
with meat and potatoes.

STRAY BULLET; ONE INJURED

A 20-year-old woman waiting to see
New Years fireworks at Busch Gardens
in Tampa, Florida, was struck in the leg
by a stray bullet fired from somewhere
outside the park.
Authorities say no one else was hurt in
or around the theme park and the injury
wasnt life-threatening.

BREAKING A RECORD IN DUBAI

The Gulf Arab emirate of Dubai was
aiming to break the world record for
the largest LED-illuminated facade with
its spectacular display centered on the
worlds tallest building.
Some 70,000 LED panels around the
2,722-foot Burj Khalifa flashed colored
lights and projected images of the countrys
leaders when clocks there struck midnight
as a massive fireworks display erupted. The
celebration draws throngs of thousands of
spectators every New Years Eve.
Emaar Properties said a team from
Guinness World Records monitored the
preparations. Last year, Dubai won the
title for the worlds largest firework display, according to Guinness.

Drive

(Continued from page 1)

The system measures over-steer (a
driver over compensating) and corrects a vehicle sliding out of control,
Schulte explained. It also measures
under-steer (a driver not compensating) when the vehicle is out of control.
According to AAA, ESC systems
reduce engine power, apply brakes
independently to each wheel and correct tire suspension much faster than
the driver could. ESC systems are particularly helpful for drivers of Sport
Utility Vehicles (SUV) and other larger vehicles.
Berelsman explained AdvanceTrac
also has electronic brake distribution
for stability control which is applied to
wheels to keep a vehicle straight and is
helpful if a driver is sliding on ice or
maneuvering quickly.
All drivers have to do is keep their
foot on the brake and the AdvanceTrac
system automatically engages,
Berelsman said.

Its a great safety feature and

activates automatically on aggressive
turns or slippages, which will make the
brake pedal pulsate, Schulte detailed.
Theres a light that illuminates indicating the system is activated. There is
also a switch on the dash to deactivate
the system. For example, if a vehicle
is stuck in snow, it can be turned off to
maneuver the vehicle out.
AAAs 2014 report Evaluating
Technologies Relevant to the
Enhancement of Driver Safety gave
ESC systems a 5-star rating for loss
of steering control scenarios and the
proven benefits spurred the federal
government to mandate it in all vehicles produced after 2012.
Statistics show these systems
reduce overall fatal crash involvement
risk by 33-34 percent 20 percent
for multiple vehicle crashes and 49
percent for single vehicle crashes.
The system also earned a 5-star
rating for its overall loss of control
safety benefit including events that
ESC was designed to prevent which

are extremely common, accounting for

up to 40 percent of fatal car crashes.
The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates ESC systems will reduce single-vehicle crashes of passenger cars
by 34 percent, single-vehicle crashes
of SUVs by 59 percent and greatly
reduce rollover crashes. Once all light
vehicles 10,000 pounds or less
on roadways are equipped with ESC,
it is estimated 5,300 to 9,600 lives
will be saved and 156,000 to 238,000
injuries will be prevented in all types
of crashes on an annual basis.
In the past 20 years, the NHTSA
has mandated a variety of vehicle
safety equipment including:
tire-pressure monitors, 2007;
inside-trunk handles to prevent
people from getting locked in a car
trunk, 2001;
passive-restraint systems to protect drivers and passengers from colliding with a steering wheel or dashboard, 1989; and
dual front airbags, 1995.

WASHINGTON (AP) More than half of Americans say

they already have enough information at restaurants to decide
whether they are making a healthy purchase. But they want
even more.
According to an Associated Press-GfK poll conducted in
December, most Americans favor labeling calories on menus
in fast food and sit-down restaurants. Most favor labels for
prepared foods in the grocery store, too.
The poll was conducted a little more than a week after the
Food and Drug Administration announced new rules that will
require restaurants and other establishments that sell prepared
foods and have 20 or more locations to post the calorie content
of food clearly and conspicuously on their menus, menu
boards and displays. Companies will have until November
2015 to comply.

MAJORITY SUPPORT MENU LABELING

A majority of Americans 56 percent favor requiring
fast food restaurants to post calorie amounts on menus, while
54 percent favor the calorie postings at sit-down restaurants
and 52 percent favor the labels at prepared food counters at
grocery stores.
Slightly fewer approved of requiring the calorie postings
in other dining locations. Forty-nine percent of Americans
supported posting calories on coffee shop menus and 44 percent approved of the postings on vending machines and at
movie theaters. Forty-three percent favored calorie postings in
amusement parks. All of those establishments will be required
to post calorie amounts under the new FDA rules.

Therefore, the culvert will
be extended using a 42-inch
pipe; this will not cause any
more flooding issues than are
already experienced in this
area, Chapman advised.
The appropriate solution
is to perform a full-blown
culvert replacement across
Second Street - a project
estimated to cost upwards of
$300,000 and will need to be
considered in future years.
He said the project is
back on track as originally
planned and the village will
be required to pay our share
in calendar year 2015.
We are planning various projects for 2015, ones
which we did not complete in

2014, Chapman said. This

year, we are taking a more
conservative approach, especially since Water Treatment
Plant Supervisor Jim Cave
is busy at the plant. We have
less personnel readily available to perform various tasks.
Another huge factor in seeing
that we are able to complete
these projects is the number of main line breaks we
experience, as well as snow
events.
Village employee Bill
Becker will attend a pesticide re-certification training
in Sandusky on Jan. 22 at a
cost of $75.
The next village council
meeting will be held at 7
p.m. Monday at the municipal
building.
