RANSLATION OF RATIB AL-'ATTAS

The Ratib of Sayyidunal Imam, al-Habib

'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Attas.


Naf'anAllahu bih
(passed away 1072 A.H/1660 C.E)

Translated by Sayyid Muhammad Naqib al-'Attas

Al-Fatihah and the verses before the Ratib have been added
by one of the commentators of the Ratib, Sayyid 'Ali ibn Hasan al-'Attas

To begin reciting this Ratib the first thing is to offer


al-Fatihah

Al-Fatihah

To the holy presence of our Master

Ilaa hadrati Sayyidina wa Habibina

and our Beloved Muhammad,

Muhammad-in

may Allah bless and bestow upon him

Sallallahu 'alaihi wa aalihi wa sahbihi

and his Family and Companions peace:

wa Sallam

and to the spirit of our beloved master

wa ilaa ruhi Sayyidina al-Habib

'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Attas,

'Umar ibni Abd-i'r Rahman al-'Attas

the composer of the Ratib,

Sahib- i'r Ratib

and to Shaykh 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah Baa Raas

wa'sh-Shaykh 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah Baa Raas

(one of his disciples).

Al-Fatihah

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan

A'udhu Billahi min ash-shaytaan-i'r rajeem

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most

Bismillah-i'r Rahman-i'r Raheem

Compassionate

Alhamdu Lillahi Rabbi'l 'Aalameen

Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer

Ar-Rahman-i'r Raheem

of the Worlds;

Maaliki Yaum-i'd Deen

Most Merciful, Most Compassionate;

Iyyaka na'budu wa Iyyaka nasta'een

King of the Day of Judgement.

Ihdinas-Siraat al-mustaqeem

You do we worship, and Your aid we seek.

Siraat al-ladheena an'amta 'alayhim

Show us the Straight Way,

Ghayri'l maghdubi 'alayhim wa lad-daalleen

The Way of those on whom

Aameen

You have bestowed Your grace,

(Recite once)

Not of those upon whom is Your wrath


nor of those who go astray.
Amen! (1:1-7)

I seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing

A'udhu Billah-i's Sami' i'l 'Aleem

and All-Knowing

min ash-shaytaan-i'r rajeem

from the accursed Satan

Had We sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain,

Lau anzalnaa haadha'l Qur'an-a 'alaa jabalin

you would assuredly have seen it humbled,

lara'aytahu khaashi'an

split asunder for fear of Allah.

mutasaddi'an min khashyatillah

And We strike these similitudes for men

wa tilka'l amthaalu nadribuhaa linnaasi

that perchance they may reflect.

la'allahum yatafakkarun

He is Allah than Whom there is no other god;

Huwallahu'l ladhee laa ilaaha illaa Huwa

The Knower of the Unseen and the Visible;

'Alimu'l ghaybi wash-shahaadati

He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

Huwa'r Rahman-u'r Raheem

He is Allah, than whom there is no other god;

Huwallah-u'l ladhee laa ilaaha illa Huwa'l

The Sovereign, the Holy One, The Source of

Maliku'l Quddus-u's Salaam-u'l Mu'min u'l

Peace,

Muhaymin-u'l 'Azeez-u'l Jabbar-u'l Mutakabbir

The Guardian of Faith, The Preserver of Safety,

Subhaanallahi 'ammaa yushrikun

The Exalted in Might, The Irresistible, the Supreme:


Glory to Allah! (High is He)
Above the partners they attribute to Him.

He is Allah, the Creator, the Maker, the Shaper,

Huwallah-u'l Khaaliq-u'l Baari-u'l Musawwiru

To Him belong the Names Most Beautiful.

Lahu'l Asmaa'-u'l Husna

Whatever is in the heavens and the earth

Yusabbihu Lahu maa fi's-samaawati wa'l ardhi

magnifies Him;

wa Huwa'l 'Azeez-u'l Hakeem

and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (59:21-24)

1. I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing,

1. A'udhu Billah-i's Sami' i'l 'Aleem

the All-Knowing

min-ash-shaytaan-i'r rajeem

from the accursed Satan.

2. I seek refuge in the complete Words of Allah

2. A'udhu bi-Kalimaatillah-i't taammaati

from the evil of that which He created.

min sharri maa khalaq


(3 times)

3. In the Name of Allah Who causes

3. Bismillah-i'lladhee

no harm to come together with His Name

laa yadurru ma'a Ismihi shay'un

from anything whatsoever on earth or in heaven,

fi'l ardi wa laa fi's samaai

for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

wa Huwa's Sami' u'l 'Aleem

4. In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful,

4. Bismillah-i'r Rahman-i'r Raheem

Most Compassionate;

wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata

there is no Power and no Strength save in Allah,

illaa Billah-i'l 'Aliyy-i'l 'Azeem

Most High, Most Great.

5. In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful,

5. Bismillah-i'r Rahman-i'r Raheem

Most Compassionate.

(3 times)

6. In the Name of Allah, in Allah do we find securiy;

6. Bismillahi tahassannaa Billah

In the Name of Allah, in Allah do we trust.

Bismillahi tawakkalnaa Billah

7. In the Name of Allah, in Allah do we have faith;

7. Bismillahi aamanna Billahi

And whoever has faith in Allah

wa man yu'min Billahi laa khawfun 'alaih

no fear shall come upon him.

8. Glory be to Allah, to Him belongs Might;

8. Sub'haanAllahi 'Azzallah

Glory be to Allah, to Him belongs Majesty.

Sub'haanAllahi Jallallah
(3 times)

9. Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him;

9. Sub'haanAllahi wa bi Hamdihi

Glory be to Allah, the Great.

Sub'haanAllah-i'l 'Azeem
(3 times)

10. Glory be to Allah, Praise be to Allah,

10. Sub'haanAllahi wa'l Hamdu Lillahi

there is no deity but Allah,

wa laa ilaaha Illallahu

and Allah is Most Great.

Wallahu Akbar

11. O One Who is Most Kind to all His creatures,

11. Yaa Latif-an bi-Khalqihi

O One Who is Omniscient of all His creatures,

Yaa 'Aleem-an bi-Khalqihi

O One Who is Most Informed

Yaa Khabeer-an bi-Khalqihi

of all His creatures,

Ultuf binaa

Be kind to us, O Most Kind One,

Yaa Latif-u Yaa 'Aleem-u Yaa Khabeer

O All-Knowing One, O Most Informed One.

12. O One Who is Most Kind,

12. Yaa Latif-an lam yazal

Who never ceases to be kind,

Ultuf binaa feemaa nazal

Be kind to us in what befalls us,

Innaka Latif-un lam tazal

You are indeed the Most Kind

Ultuf binaa wa'l Muslimin

Who never ceases to be kind,

Be kind to us and all the Muslims.

13. There is no deity but Allah

13. Laa Ilaaha Illallah

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah

Muhammad-u'r Rasulullah

14. Allah is sufficient for us, and most excellent


Manager of our affairs.

14. Hasbunallahu wa Ni'mal Wakeel

15. O Allah! bestow Blessings upon Muhammad,

15. Allahumma Salli 'alaa Muhammad

O Allah! bestow Blessings upon him,

Allahumma Salli 'alaihi wa Sallim

and peace

16. I seek forgiveness from Allah

16. Astaghfirullah

I am repentant to Allah

Taaibuna Ilallah

17. O Allah! (grant me to die) by it-

17. Yaa Allahu bihaa

O Allah! (grant me to die) by it-

Yaa Allahu bihaa

O Allah! (grant me to die) by a

Yaa Allahu bi husni'l khaatimah

Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord,

Ghufraanaka Rabbanaa

and to You is the end of all journeys.

wa Ilayka'l maseer

Allah burdens no soul save to its capacity;

Laa Yukallifullaahu nafsan illaa wus'ahaa

standing to its account is what it has earned,

lahaa maa kasabat wa 'alayhaa maktasabat

and against its account is what it has earned.

Rabbanaa laa tu'aakhidhnaa

Our Lord, take us not to task

innaseenaa aw akhta'naa

if we forget, or make mistake.

Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil 'alaynaa isran

Our Lord, burden us not with a load

kamaa hamaltahu 'alalladheena min qablinaa

such as You did lay upon those before us.

Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa

Our Lord, lay us not with a burden

maa laa taaqata lanaa bihi

beyond what we have the strength to bear.

Wa'fu 'annaa Waghfir lanaa Wa'rhamnaa

And pardon us, and forgive us,

Anta Mawlana Fansurnaa

and have mercy on us.

'ala'l qaumi'l kaafireen

You are our Protector;

Help us against the people who stand against Faith.

To the holy presence of our noble Master,

Ilaa hadrati Sayyidina wa Habibina wa Shafi'ina

our Beloved, our Intercessor

Rasulillah-i

The Messenger of Allah,

Muhammad ibni 'Abdillah-i

Muhammad son of 'Abd Allah-

Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam

Allah Bless and grant him Peace!-and his Family,

wa aalihi wa as-haabihi wa azwaajihi

his Companions, his Consorts, his Descendants;

wa dhurriyatihi

that Allah exalt them in the Garden;

bi Annallaha yu'lee darajaatihim fi'l jannah

and grant us to benefit from

wa yanfa'unaa bi-asraarihim wa anwaarihim

their spiritual secrets and their lights,

wa 'ulumihim fi'd deen

and their various knowledges in religion,

wa'd dunyaa wa'l aakhirah

in the world and in the Hereafter,

wa yaj'alanaa min hizbihim

and make us to be among their Party,

wa yarzuqunaa mahabbatahum

and nourish us with Love for them,

wa yatawaffaanaa 'alaa millatihim

and make us to die in their Way of Religion,

wa yahshurunaa fee zumratihim

and assemble us in the Final Gathering

Al-Fatihata Athaabakumullah

in their Group.

To the spirit of our noble master,

Ilaa ruhi Sayyidina al-Faqih al-Muqaddam

the foremost in discernment,

Muhammad ibni 'Ali Baa 'Alawi

Muhammad ibn 'Ali Ba 'Alawi,

wa usulihi wa furu'ihi

and his genealogical root and its branches,

wa jamee'i saadaatinaa aali Abi 'Alawi

and all our noble masters of the Ba 'Alawi

wa dhawi'l huquqi 'alaihim ajma'een

as well as all those who have rights over them-

Annallaha yaghfiru lahum wa yarhamuhum

that Allah forgive them, and have mercy on them,

wa yu'lee darajaatihim fi'l jannah

and grant them lofty ranks in the Garden,

wa yanfa'unaa bi-asraarihim

and grant us to benefit from their spiritual secrets,

wa anwaarihim wa 'ulumihim fi'd deen

their lights, their various knowledges in religion,

wa'd dunyaa wa'l aakhirah

in the world, and in the Hereafter.

Saahib-i'r Ratib Qutb-i'l Anfaas

the composer of the Ratib,

al-Habib 'Umar ibn 'Abd-i'r Rahman-i'l 'Attas

the Pole of the Breathings,

thumma ilaa ruhi'sh Shaykh

the beloved 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Attas;

'Ali ibni 'AbdAllah Baa Raas

and to the spirit of the venerable teacher

thumma ilaa ruhi Sayyidina wa habibina

'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah Baa Raas;

wa barkatina wa qudwatina wa murshidina

and to the spirit of our noble master,

al-Imam-i'l Habib

our beloved, our blessing,

Ahmad ibni Hasan ibni 'AbdAllah-i'l 'Attas

our model and our guide, the beloved leader

wa usulihim wa furu'ihim

Ahmad ibn Hasan ibn 'AbdAllah al-'Attas,

wa dhawi'l huquqi 'alaihim ajma'een

and their genealogical roots and branches

Annallaha yaghfiru lahum wa yarhamuhum

as well as those that have rights over them-

wa yu'lee darajaatihim fi'l jannah

that Allah forgive them, and have mercy on them,

wa yanfa'unaa bi-asraarihim wa anwaarihim

and elevate their ranks in the Garden,

wa 'ulumihim wa nafahaatihim

and grant us to benefit from their spiritual secrets,

fi'd deen wa'd dunya wa'l aakhirah

their lights, their various knowledges and

beneficial effects in religion,

Al-Fatihah

To the spirits of the saints, the witnesses,

Ilaa arwaahi'l awliyaa' wa'sh shuhadaa'

the righteous, and rightly-guided leaders;

wa's saaliheen wa'l a'immati'r raashideen

and to the spirits of our parents,

thumma ilaa arwaahi waalideena

our doctors of religion, our teachers

wa mashaayikhina wa mu'allimeena

and all those who have rights over us;

wa dhawi'l huquqi 'alaynaa ajma'een

and to the spirits of the departed

thumma ilaa arwaahi amwaati'l

who truly believe and have faith,

mu'mineena wa'l mu'minaat

both men and women,

wa'l muslimeena wa'l muslimaat

and who have willingly submitted to Allah in Islam-

Annallaha yaghfiru lahum wa yarhamuhum

that Allah forgive them, and have mercy on them,

wa yu'lee darajaatihim fi'l jannah

and elevate their ranks in the Garden,

wa yanfa'unaa bi asraarihim

and grant us to benefit from their spiritual secrets,

wa anwaarihim wa 'ulumihim fi'd deen

their lights and their various knowledges in religion,

waddunya wa'l aakhirah

in the world and in the Hereafter.

Al-Fatihata Athaabakumullah

May Allah reward all of you!

Then finally al-Fatihah

Al-Fatihah

That Allah kindly accept our works

Bi'l qabul wa tamaami kulli su'l wa ma'mulin

and make complete all requests that are hoped for,

wa salaahi'sh sha'n zaahiran wa baatinan

and make good our affairs,

fi'd deen wa'd dunya wa'l aakhirah

both manifest and hidden, in religion

daafi'atan li kulli sharr jaalibatan li kulli khayr

in this world and in the Hereafter;

lanaa wa li ahbaabinaa wa li waalideenaa

and that He may repel evil from us

wa mashaayikhina fi'd deen

and attract good for us and our loved ones,

ma'allutfi wa'l 'aafiyati wa 'alaa niyyati

our parents, our teachers of religion,

Annallaha yunawwiru qulubanaa

with grace and well-being, with the intention that

wa qawaalibanaa

Allah may illuminate our hearts and our souls

ma'attuqaa wa'l hudaa wa'l 'afaafi

with godliness and guidance and purity,

wa'l mawti 'alaa Deeni'l Islam-i wa'l Imaan

and make us to die in the Religion of Islam

bilaa mihnatin wa laa imtihaanin

in true belief and faith without trial and examination

bi-haqqi Sayyidi waladi 'Adnan

by right of our Master the son of 'Adnan

wa li kulli niyyatin saalihatin

and with every good intention.

wa ilaa Hadrati'l Habib Muhammad-in

And (finally) to the holy presence

Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam

of the Beloved Muhammad-

wa man waalaah

Allah bless him and give him peace-

and whoever aids him.
