1. Previous study
Research on the use of Silent way method in teaching speaking has be done by
several previous researchers. Here is the description of some previous study that
discusses the use of cartoon video as a media to teach descriptive writing text.
Research was a descriptive qualitative research designed to describe the teaching
learning process which was taken place in natural setting of classroom. The
researcher was the observer in this research. The data of the research were collected
through observation checklists, questionnaires and field notes.
In this research, the researcher took notes based on everything she saw and heard
in the class during the teaching learning process. At the end of teaching learning
process, the teacher and observer did the reflection based on the observation
checklists. After reflecting the teaching learning process, the next step was exchanged
the information of the situation happened in class. In this case, the teacher and
observer discussed the information of teaching learning process based on observation
checklists and field notes.
The subject of the study was the students of the eight grade of Junior High
School. The researcher took class 8F of SMP AL-ISLAM KRIAN (YAPALIS). It was
consisted of 43 students, included 22 boys and 21 girls.
From the statement above the writer conclude that the researcher focus on
learning process so, he knows efect the use cartoon video
2. Use cartoon video as media

According Baker (1970) an early review of the literature on the use of film,
audiotape, and videotape in helping teachers to improve their teaching concluded that
such materials are effective only if specific aspects of the teaching are highlighted

and discussed. Some of the advantages of teaching writing use cartoon video as
media:
a.

The students are more active in the teaching learning activity.

b. The students will be able to express their thought, ideas, and able to find the
correct themselves.
c.

By using a cartoon video, the students found it easier to get an

idea because they only rewrote the story in their word, so they
didnt difficult to get the idea

d. The students had a lot of words based on the cartoon video, so

they only arranged the word into a good description

Some of the disadvantages:

a. Teaching by using a movie needs more facilities like television,
VCD player or disc drive computer, and unfortunately not all
schools have those facilities.

The students difficult to describing thing in video.

3. Writing Skill

According Silliman, Jimerson, & Wilkinson (2000) Writing is a very complex

activity because many processes occur at the same time: decisions on information,
meaning construction, language formation, editing the product and constant
monitoring of the process. According Tara McCarthy Descriptive text is that domain
of writing that developes image through the use of precise sensory words and phrases,
through devices such as methapor and the sound of words.
