Seasons

1. Examine the graph above, which show the average monthly high temperature for 4
different cities. Examine the yearly temperature range and rank these cities from lowest
latitude to highest latitude.
Highest Latitude _____, _____, _____, _____ Lowest Latitude

2. Using a thick, solid line, draw in the profile of the average monthly high temperature for
Champaign on the graph on the bottom of the previous page. You can find the data for
this graph here: http://www.usclimatedata.com/climate-on-your-site.php?id=usil2051
3. On this same graph, draw a long dashed line to represent the monthly average high
temperature as if Champaign were in the Southern Hemisphere.
4. On the same graph, draw a short dashed line to represent the monthly average high as if
Champaign were located near the coast of a large ocean, in the Northern Hemisphere.
(Assume the weather moves from the ocean onto the land like the west coast of the US.)
5. In its elliptical orbit, the Earth is closest to the sun in the beginning of January and
farthest from the sun in the beginning of July and the difference in the distance is roughly
5 million kilometers. If the Earths orbit around the sun were made circular by bringing it
closer to the sun in July and farther away in January, what would happen to
a. The average temperature in June, July and August in Champaign, IL?
colder; stay the same; warmer (circle one)
b. The average temperature in June, July and August in Perth, Australia?
colder; stay the same; warmer (circle one)
c. The average temperature in December, January and February in Champaign, IL?
colder; stay the same; warmer (circle one)
d. The average temperature in December, January and February in Perth, Australia?
colder; stay the same; warmer (circle one)
Pressure
6. Last year, I flew from Champaign to Dallas, TX on a regional jet. When we took off, the
flight attendant gave me a bag of potato chips as a snack. I noticed that at takeoff the bag
of chips was nearly completely inflated with air (and some chips). As we took off, the
pressure dropped in the jet from 1030 mb down to 780 mb! Once we reached our
crusining altitude I watched my chips closely waiting for the inevitable to happen. What
eventually happened to my bag of chips and why did it happen? (The picture below
is what the chips looked like on takeoff.)

7. The surface pressure on Earth is 14.7 lbs/in 2 (pounds per square inch). How much does
the atmosphere weigh above Assembly Hall? From above, Assembly Hall is 400 foot in
diameter circle. (Hint: Find the circular area of the dome of Assembly Hall first.)
