levels currently supported by versions of PowerHA 5.5 through PowerHA 7.1. This is a compilation of
the official support flashes. It was created by and maintained by Shawn Bodily. Please feel free to
email questions/suggestions/errors to sbodily@cleartechnologies.net
Historically, newer versions of PowerHA have inherited device support from previous versions, unless
specific support was removed by the product. Over time this has not been common to remove
support for very old hardware. Technically, if it was supported in the past, and the hardware can run a
version of AIX that is supported by the current version of PowerHA, then it is supported.
Since PowerHA 7.1 is not supported on any AIX level before 6.1.6, if the hardware is not supported
on 6.1.6, then by definition PowerHA 7.1 would not support it either. Also, if the hardware has not
made any statement of support for AIX 7.1, though the table may show PowerHA supports it, it is not
valid until such support is stated. It is my intention to make it as complete as possible at the time of
writing; however it only focuses on hardware support from the last five year or so. This consists
mainly of POWER5 and above.
All POWER5 and above systems are supported on AIX 7.1 and HACMP 5.4.1 and above. The
specific HACMP/PowerHA requirements for AIX 7.1 support and are listed below:
PowerHA 5.5 SP7
PowerHA 6.1 SP3
PowerHA 7.1
Full software support details are always in the official support flash. The support flashes are usually
available for five years and are embedded in the documented at the end.

It is common to use multipathing drivers with storage. If utilizing MPIO, SDD, and/or SDDPCM on any
PowerHA controlled storage, it is a requirement to use enhanced concurrent volume groups (ECVGs).
This requirement also applies to vSCSI and NPIV devices.

This support announcement is for the addition of MPIO support. These units have been supported
since 2005 using RDAC.
Testing was performed with DS4700/4800 Microcode levels 7.10.23 and 7.15.07
This support includes using SDDPCM, with the caveat that SDDPCM support requires the use of
enhanced concurrent volume groups.
Using MPIO with PowerHA always requires the use of enhanced concurrent vgs. Also, in general,
support for DS units require switch attachment. Otherwise if direct attaching, ONLY cluster nodes
must be connected to them, AND the use of ECVGs is required.

IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for AIX Adds Support for the IBM Power 8 Family of Servers
June 10, 2014
IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for AIX* adds support for the new IBM Power 8 family of servers.
Please refer to the following information for support details:
1. This support announcement is for PowerHA SystemMirror version v6.1 and v7 products.
Recommended levels are: PowerHA v6.1 SP12 and PowerHA v7.1.3 SP1.
2. Note that these PowerHA SystemMirror products can be used with AIX v6 or v7 Operating
Systems on Power 8 System.
3. For requirements regarding the level of AIX needed for Power 8 support, refer to AIX related
support publications
4. This support is based on the requirement that deployment meets the generic clustering
requirements.
Ensure that redundant network communication links between the cluster nodes is available
and operating correctly
If multicast based v7 cluster is deployed, mping based multicast packet communication check
should pass for more than 5 minutes (some routers block multicast traffic after 3 minutes or so)
Shared storage is configured as necessary based on the needs and is operating correctly.
Note that repository disk in v7 product is minimally required and be shared across all the
nodes in the cluster
Clients are advised to obtain the latest service updates for this support.

Notes:
(*) AIX 6.1 TL06 SP3 preferred with RSCT 3.1.0.4 (packaged in CSM PTF 1.7.1.10 installed with AIX 6.1.6.3) is
the preferred baseline for zBX Virtual Servers.
When using PowerHA 7.1 on AIX 7.1, PowerHA must be at minimum level 7.1.1 and AIX bos.cluster.rte fileset
must be at minimum level 7.1.1.15.
For blades in zBX model 2458-002, a minimum level MCL011 in the N48129 EC Stream is required. This provides
VIOS 2.2.0.12-FP24 SP-02.
For blades in zBX model 2458-003 the GA level of the H09137 EC Stream is sufficient. It provides VIOS 2.2.1.3.
When setting up disk volumes used for Power HA, care must be taken to define zBX Virtual Server bootable disks
such that they are discovered prior to the shared disks used for Power HA resource groups. In most cases this is
achieved by defining the bootable disks with LUN IDs lower than the LUN IDs of the shared disks.
POWER HA DLPAR control is not supported.
PowerHA is not supported managing IPAT on IPv6 network interfaces/addresses used for zManager PPM control
(i.e. "red" network). This network must be unused and left for zManager sole use. Please refer to the zManager
PPM Administration Guide.
PowerHA is intended for failover within an ensemble and not for business continuity across ensembles.

Notes:
Requirements:
PowerHA and Virtual SCSI/NPIV
The volume group must be defined as Enhanced Concurrent Mode. In general, Enhanced Concurrent Mode is the
recommended mode for sharing volume groups in PowerHA clusters because volumes are accessible by multiple
PowerHA nodes, resulting in faster fallover in the event of a node failure. If file systems are used on the standby nodes,
they are not mounted until the point of fallover so accidental use of data on standby nodes is impossible. If shared
volumes are accessed directly (without file systems) in Enhanced Concurrent Mode, these volumes are accessible from
multiple nodes so access must be controlled at a higher layer such as databases.
If any cluster node provides access to shared volumes through VIOS provided by IBM VIO Server V2.1, or by IBM VIO
Server V2.2 without NPIV, all nodes must do so. This means that disks cannot be shared between an LPAR using by IBM
VIO Server V2.1, or by IBM VIO Server V2.2 without NPIV and a node directly accessing those disks. Disks can be
shared between an LPAR using VIOS provided by IBM VIO Server V2.1 or 2.2 with NPIV and a node directly accessing
those disks.
From the point of view of the VIO Server, physical disks (hdisks) are shared, not logical volumes or volume groups. All
volume group construction and maintenance on these shared disks is done from the PowerHA nodes, not from the VIO
Server.
PowerHA and Virtual Ethernet
IP Address Takeover (IPAT) via Aliasing must be used. IPAT via Replacement and MAC Address Takeover are not
supported. In general, IPAT via Aliasing is recommended for all PowerHA networks that can support it.
PowerHAs PCI Hot Plug facility cannot be used. PCI Hot Plug operations are available through the VIO Server. Note
that when a PowerHA node is using Virtual I/O, PowerHAs PCI Hot Plug facility is not meaningful because the I/O
adapters are virtual rather than physical.
All Virtual Ethernet interfaces defined to PowerHA should be treated as single-adapter networks as described in the
PowerHA Planning and Installation Guide. In particular, the netmon.cf facility must be used to monitor and detect failures
of the network interfaces. The netmon.cf file should contain a list of IP addresses chosen so that the physical interfaces
must be up in order to ping. These addresses must be preceded by "!REQ". See the text of APAR IZ01331 for further
details, available from techlink.austin.ibm.com. Due to the nature of Virtual Ethernet, other mechanisms to detect the
failure of network interfaces are not effective.
Further configuration-dependent attributes of PowerHA with Virtual Ethernet
If the VIO Server has multiple physical interfaces on the same network or if there are two or more PowerHA nodes using
one or more VIO Servers in the same frame, PowerHA will not be informed of (and hence will not react to) individual
physical interface failures. This does not normally limit the availability of the entire cluster because VIOS itself routes
traffic around individual failures. The VIOS support is analogous to EtherChannel in this regard. Even in the extreme case
where all physical interfaces managed by VIO Servers have failed, the VIOS will continue to route traffic from one LPAR
to another in the same frame, and the virtual Ethernet interface used by PowerHA will not be reported as having failed and
PowerHA will not react. Other methods (based on the VIO Server and not PowerHA) must be used for providing
notification of individual adapter failures.
If the VIO Server has only a single physical interface on a network then a failure of that physical interface will be detected
by PowerHA. However, that failure will isolate the node from the network.
Although some of these may be viewed as configuration restrictions, many are direct consequences of I/O virtualization.
All support and restrictions associated with Virtual Ethernet provided by IBM VIO Server V2.2 apply to the corresponding
level of IVE.

Restrictions:
PowerHA/XD using the Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC) support in IBM TotalStorage DS8000 and DS6000 as
well as IBM ESS800 is currently not supported with VIO. IBM intends to remove this restriction in a future product
update. (This restriction removed/feature added in PowerHA v6.1)
Notes:
Requirements:
PowerHA and Virtual SCSI/NPIV
The volume group must be defined as Enhanced Concurrent Mode. In general, Enhanced Concurrent Mode (ECM) is
the recommended mode for sharing volume groups in PowerHA clusters because volumes are accessible by multiple
PowerHA nodes, resulting in faster failover. If file systems are used on the standby nodes, they are not mounted until the
point of failover so accidental use of data on standby nodes is prevented. If shared volumes are accessed directly (without
file systems) in ECM, because these volumes are accessible from multiple nodes, access must be controlled at a higher
layer such as the database level.
If any cluster node accesses shared volumes through VIOS provided by IBM VIO Server V1 or IBM VIO Server V2.1
without NPIV, all nodes must do so. This means that disks cannot be shared between an LPAR using VIOS provided by
IBM VIO Server V1 or IBM VIO Server V2.1 without NPIV and a node directly accessing those disks. Disks can be shared
between an LPAR using VIOS provided by IBM VIO Server V2.1 withNPIV and a node directly accessing those disks.
PowerHA's "PCI Hot Plug" facility cannot be used. PCI Hot Plug operations are available through the VIO Server. Note
that when an PowerHA node is using Virtual I/O, PowerHA's "PCI Hot Plug" facility is not meaningful because the I/O
adapters are virtual rather than physical.
All Virtual Ethernet interfaces defined to PowerHA should be treated as "single-adapter networks" as described in the
PowerHA Planning and Installation Guide.
Even in the extreme case
where all physical interfaces managed by VIO Servers have failed, the VIOS will continue to route traffic from one LPAR
to another in the same frame, and the Virtual Ethernet interface used by PowerHA will not be reported as having failed
and PowerHA will not react.
All support and restrictions associated with Virtual Ethernet provided by IBM VIO Server V2.1 apply to the corresponding
level of IVE.

Notes:
The clverify function will always report "ERROR - SVC PPRC license is not activated on SVC" for SVC 4.3 when used
with the XD feature, even when the license is valid. However, this message will not prevent verification from completing
successfully. The following APAR should be applied to avoid having this message sent unnecessarily**:
While not required for correct operation with SDDPCM, the configuration of Fast I/O Failure on fiber-channel devices is
highly recommended. For information on configuring this feature refer to "Storage Multipath Subsystem Device Driver
Users Guide".
** These APARs are not yet generally available. Please contact IBM Support to obtain Interim Fix (IFix) packages.
Additional Requirement:
The AIX OS error daemon parameters should be tuned to avoid lost log entries. PowerHA requires the buffer size be set
to at least 1 MB and the log size to 10 MB. The following command can be used:
"errdemon -B 1048576 -s 10485760"
Restriction notes for Metro Mirror:
Although SVC Host Name Aliases are arbitrary, for PowerHA's support of Metro Mirror they must match the node
names used in the defined PowerHA sites.
Resource Groups to be managed by PowerHA cannot contain volume groups with both Metro Mirror-protected
and non-Metro Mirror-protected disks.
PowerHA does not support Global Mirror functions of SVC Copy Services in PowerHA V5.3 and V5.4.1. However
this feature was added in PowerHA V5.5.
PowerHA V5.3 does not support moving resource groups across sites.
For specific PowerHA/XD CSPOC restrictions, refer to the "HACMP/XD for Metro Mirror: Planning and Administration
Guide"
Refer to the PowerHA/XD (formerly HACMP) support statement of VIOS for restriction information:

This support announcement is for the addition of MPIO support. These units have been supported since 2005
using RDAC.
Testing was performed with DS4700/4800 Microcode levels 7.10.23 and 7.15.07
This support includes using SDDPCM, with the caveat that SDDPCM support requires the use of enhanced
concurrent volume groups.
Using MPIO with PowerHA always requires the use of enhanced concurrent vgs.
