MEANING
A large area multi-purpose society is a society
which caters to all the needs of the tribal
people and farmers such as seed, fertilizers,
farming instruments, financial assistance to
them.
Cover around 10,000 to 20,000 population in
tribal or rural area.

FUNCTIONS OF LAMPS

Concessional Finance.

Marketing of tribal Produce.

Distribution of domestic requirement.

Supply of agriculture input.

SUBJECT MATTER OF BYE-LAWS

The multi-State cooperative society may make bye-laws
in following respect (i)
The name and registered address of
the multi-State cooperative society and its
branches.
(ii)
The area of operation.
(iii)
The objectives and purpose for which
its funds may be applied.
(iv)
The privileges, rights, duties and
liabilities of members including nominal
members
(v) The mode of conducting business such as
manufacture, purchase, stock taking and other allied
matters

IN THE CASE OF COOPERATIVE BANKS AND

MULTI-STATE CREDIT SOCIETIES
(a) Maximum loan admissible per member.
(b) Maximum rate of interest on loans to
members;
(c) Conditions on which loans may be granted
to members;
(d) Procedure for grant of loans and advances
and for the grant of extension of time and for
repayment of such loans, advances, etc;
(e) Circumstances under which a loan may be
recalled.

ADVANTAGES OF LARGE AREA MULTI-PURPOSE

SOCIETIES

1. Society provides number of services, it

develops loyalty and interest among the members
for the society.
2. This provision of services also attracts the
large number of people who are at present
outside the co-operative fold.
3. Society helps the members in redeeming
them from debt and brings them profitable
returns for their produce.

4. One society doing all the functions can be easily
supervised and inspected.
5. Loss in anyone section of the society can be

easily set off against the profits of the other

branches.
6. As the volume of business of such a society
is high.

DISADVANTAGE OF THE LARGE AREA MULTIPURPOSE SOCIETIES

1. Difficult to grasp on the part of tribal people and
villagers.
2. Difficult competent persons in villages who can manage

different kinds of work.

3. Since these societies operate over a number of villages, they
cannot ensure close, natural knowledge so essential for the

success of cooperation.
4. Mixing up of credit with sale and purchase business is
often very risky.

5. The accounts of Different activities are generally mixed up

and thus the true position of various activities of the society cannot
be known.
6. A LAMPS is rather difficult to supervise proper utilization

of loans.
7. The degree of complexity in different activities is
different and failure in one may weaken or destroy others if they

are organically combined.
