Induchem Ltd, Venezuela
Manufacturers and distributors of maintenance products, raw materials and thermo
plastics, and providing clients with project commissioning. Induchem
employs around 200 staff and boasts organisations such as Coca-Cola, Colgate-Pal
molive, Smurfit Kappa, and Nestl amongst their clientele.
Invited into the role to serve as technical support and manage pre and post-sal
es activities; managing a portfolio of 45
clients and prospecting new clientele for the design, planning and delivery of p
roducts and raw materials, including:
- Chemical products for industrial maintenance: disinfectants, degreaser, sanit
izer, etc.
- Raw materials: sodium hydroxide, nitric acid, sulphuric acid, chlorhydric aci
d, isopropyl alcohol, etc.
- Thermoplastics: tanks, bombs, valves and pipes for corrosive products.
Visit clients laboratories to scope and analyse objectives for new developments
and / or troubleshoot technical issues;
harnessing a strong Engineering background to perform tests, troubleshoot, and p
rovide solutions.
Act as knowledge broker between internal manufacturing and quality teams; analy
sing information for the specification
of new solutions, and providing high level advice and support for the design of
custom-made products.
Deliver technical presentations and product education to clients in a
clear, unambiguous manner; ensuring
comprehension of concepts and providing after-sales support.
Provide client workshops; demonstrating methods of chemical storage, safe handl
ing of products, instruction on how to
use information provided by a Material Safety Data Sheet, and recommendations on
managing leaks.
Complete risk assessments to ascertain effectiveness of client implemen
tations and identify opportunities for
improvement; communicating same to management.
Review reports and modify processes and plans as required; demonstrati
ng adaptability and the capacity to swiftly
attend to clients requests.
Forge strong relationships with key clients; overseeing all aspects of tender /
contract negotiation, quotations (up to 7
per day), and administration of accounts.
Key Achievements:
Managed a HACCAP project for a client specialising in the manufacture
of mayonnaise who had an issue with high
levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP):
- Analysed the issue of a 3.8 ATP level a result of <2.0 is good,
between 2.0 and 3.0 is an alert, and >3.0 is an
indication of large quantities of microorganisms.
- Devised a sanitisation plan using Induchems chemical products; studyin
g the clients process system and
sanitisation plan.
- Obtained samples to determine which kind of undesirable microorganism was cau
sing a high measure of ATP; finding
it to be salmonella on their system.
- Selected and tested products specialised for the food industry; taki
ng into consideration the clients equipment
material (stainless steel 306 L food grade) and performing several evaluations.
- Detected critical points for testing every day by the clients quality assuranc
e team and submitted recommendations.
- Recommended a cleaning and sanitisation plan using sodium hydroxide and nitri
c acid as cleaners, and then using
peracetic acid as a sanitiser.
- Reduced the level of ATP on all equipment from 3.8 to a more than acceptable
1.1 / 1.4.
Charged with concept development for a new client in the dairy indus
try who was experiencing difficulties with a
competitors product:
- Reviewed the clients objective for an iodine product with 1% active ingredient
. Client was using a product with 1.5%
active ingredient which was causing irritation (mastitis) to the cows.
- Assisted the laboratory in developing a new product (we had a current product
of 3% active ingredient).
- Presented a sample of 20 litres to the client and tested the product, in the
field, for several days, with the client having
the product externally tested with a positive outcome.
- Secured the clients business of 720 litres per month, as well as upselling of
other products.
Investigated a clients request to lower the use of chlorhydric acid in their wat
er treatment plant and increase the use of
aluminium sulphate as a coagulant, which also has a lower pH of 4 at 15% dissolu
tion:
- Determined the client had a process water with a pH of 10 and used chlorhydri
c acid to lower this pH; addressing
clients concern that an increase in coagulant use could affect clarification of t
he water in their plant.
- Undertook jar tests; experimenting with different doses of chemical products
(and a Nalco flocculent) to determine
the best water clarification and decrease of chlorhydric acid consumption.
- Made a determination that the clients request was unviable, as a result of the
created floc not being as dense
as required at lower chlorhydric acid doses, thus directly affecting clarificati
on of the water.
- Presented a report and findings to the client, along with suggestions.

that could be dried to the % required by the grinding process; and mechanical pr
oblems with the dryer and crusher.
- Designed a wet grinding system to replace the dryer and crusher stage, that r
elied on the A. Gupta and D.S. Yan
approaches for a ball mill in a closed circuit with a hydrocyclone system; produ
cing the required granulometry of 80
Tyler mesh at the required production rate (17.29 ton/h).
- Designed a rotary dryer based on the McCabe approach within an open circuit w
ith a rod mill, to grind the material
to required granulometry and production rate.
- Undertook an economic analysis; calculating cash flow over a 15-year
economic horizon and estimating a loan
repayment of 70% of total investment with fixed interests of 12% and constant re
payment instalments for 10 years.
- Addressed losses during the load-in of trucks, where material was dispersed i
n the air due to use of a conveyor belt
thus polluting the environment, products and equipment of neighbours t
hat led to non-compliance with the
Environment Act. Proposed a bulk loading spout for feldspar with a density of 72
PCF and loading rate of 19MTPH.
- Managed the entire project, from observations, research and design, through t
o a feasibility study.
