Quiz 3
5.1

Topics to be Covered

Linear Independence, Spanning and Rank (useful topic, Quiz 3 Questions

1-5)
Matrix Rank and Inverse (useful topic, Quiz 3 Questions 6-12)
Determinants (useful topic Quiz 3 Questions 13 and 14)
Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors (more challenging topic, Quiz 3 Questions
15-20)
Taylor approximations for functions of several variables (more challenging
topic, Quiz 3 Question 21)

The topics covered in class 2 (with the exception of the implicit function
theorem) are all more important than the topics covered in class 3, because the
class 2 topics are things that you will use all the time, whereas the class 3 topics
are things you will use some of the time.
The absolute minimum level of knowledge that you must have from class 3
is:
No matrices that are not square matrices have an inverse. Some square
matrices do not have inverses. There are things called rank and determinant that tell you whether a square matrix has an inverse. The denitions
of rank and determinant and how to nd them are not essential.
the denition of an eigenvalue and eigenvector
but not how to nd them
35

CHAPTER 5. QUIZ 3

36

that Taylor approximations can be carried over to functions of several

variable
but not how to do so
the fact that they can nd out about these topics from the notes when
they need them
Note that if this is all you know you may nd that there are Quiz 3 Questions
that you cannot do in the September course exam, and you will have to revisit
these topics when necessary during the year.
