(b) Determine the speed of transverse waves along the string. What is the value of M? (4+4 pts.)
(c) Assume that the string is stretched along the x-axis, and a point on the string at an antinode moves a total
vertical distance of 4 mm during one complete cycle. Write down the equation of the traveling waves that give
rise to the standing wave pattern in this experiment. (8 pts.)
B. (Not related to A) Two loudspeakers, S1 and S2, are driven by the same amplifier and emit sinusoidal sound waves
of frequency 860 Hz in phase. Point P is 12.0 m from S1 and 13.4 m from S2. Is the sound intensity at point P
maximum or minimum? Justify your answer. Take speed of sound in air to be 344 m/s. (10 pts.)

(a) Find the location, and the relative size of the final image as seen by an eye looking toward the mirror through
the lens. (9+ 3 pts.)
(b) Is the image real or virtual? Justify your answer. Draw a neat ray diagram in the figure above showing the
formation of image. (2+4 pts.)
(b) What is the resolving power of the grating? Will this grating be able to resolve sodium D-lines of wavelength
589 nm and 589.6 nm in the first order? Justify your answer. (3+3 pts.)

(b) Use the electric field in part (a) to calculate the electric
potential everywhere, that is, in the regions: r>c,
b<r<c, a<r<b, and r<a, assuming that the potential is
0 at r = infinity. Graph the electric potential as a
function of r. Draw an equi-potential surface in the b<r<c region, and an electric line of force between the shell
and the sphere in the figure above. (3+3+3+3+4 +2+2 pts.)
(c) The r = c surface is now grounded. Find an expression for the capacitance of the spherical capacitor. (4 pts)

(b) Derive an expression for the magnitude of the net B at P. The expression will include a, I, and the variable x.
Write an expression for the vector B using the unit vector notation. At what value of x is the magnitude of B a
maximum, and what is the maximum value? (8+2+4)
(c) Suppose a third long, straight wire parallel to the other two passes through P, and that each wire carries a
current I = 6.0 A. Assume a = 40 cm and x = 60 cm. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force per
unit length of the third wire, if the current in it is directed into the plane of the figure. (6 pts.)

(c) If the resistance in the circuit abcd is 1.5 (assumed to be constant), find the magnitude and direction of the
force required to keep the rod moving to the right with the uniform velocity of 7.5 m/s. (5 pts.)
(d) What is the rate at which energy is dissipated by the circuit? (3 pts.)

Problem 6. AC Circuit
An ac source supplies a voltage v(t) = 30 V sin t to a series RCL circuit. The effective values of the circuit elements
are: R = 4 C = 8 F, and L = 6 mH. However, the circuit designer had to combine two resistors of equal resistance in
parallel, and two capacitors of equal capacitance in parallel to obtain the specified effective resistance of 4 and
capacitance of 8 F, respectively.
a)
c)
Find the value of the angular frequency for which the current amplitude in the circuit will be a maximum? What
is that current amplitude? Find the root-mean-square current in the circuit at that frequency. (4 +2+2 pts.)
d) Find the maximum voltages across the resistor, capacitor, and inductor at the frequency in part (d), and show
those in a neat, to the scale, phasor diagram. (2+2+2+3 pts.)
