Course Description
This course focuses on the basic concept, principles, theories and issues
covered in phonology. It will deal with the study of the science of human
sound. The materials include the speech production, and articulatory
phonetics, place, manner of articulation and voicing. Besides, it will deal with
some exercise of phonetics symbol, both phonetics transcription and
orthographic version. Beside English, there will be several exercises of
phonological-case from some languages.
Course Objectives
After completing the course, the students are expected to be able to:
know English vowels and consonants;
apply them in practice
get a habit of practicing the English sounds well
write phonetic symbol
Evaluation
Evaluation is done during and after the teaching-learning process. The final
grade is determined by attendance and participation, assignments, mid-term
and final examination. The followings are: 1) The Chart of the Aspects to
Evaluate and Their Percentage Score; and 2) Grading System for the students
final grade.

Learning Contract:
1. Students are required to come on time. This discipline will be assessed
in another form.
2. Students are required to attend every meeting conducted in the
classroom for at least 12 from the whole 16 meetings. A careless to this
contract will cause ZERO for the aspect of attendance and participation.
3. Students are required to read actively the suggested readings.
4. Students are required to do five assignments:
a. Making a chapter summary;
b. Making a paper with at least 10 references (books are available)
c. Recording 36 English phonemes: 12 vowels and 24 consonants;
and its application
d. Transforming a poem into phonetic symbol on a creative media;
e. Preparing and holding an exhibition.
5. Students and lecturer are not allowed to smoke IN THE CLASSROOM.
6. Students and lecturer are required to TURN OFF THE HANDPHONES
OR SET THEM IN SILENT when they come into the classroom.
