What is an Automatic Recirculation Valve?

Main function
To prevent pump instability, overheating and to prevent Cavitation

What is Cavitation?

Cavitation is defined as the process

of formation and disappearance of the
vapour phase of a liquid when it is
subjected to reduced and
subsequently increased pressures.

What Does This Mean:

It is the phase transition between liquid
And vapour conditions.

Liquid

Steps and Effect

Knocking sounds

Vibration

Erratic power consumption

Fluctuation or reduction in
pump performance

Steps in Cavitation
Formation of bubbles inside the liquid

Growth of bubbles

Collapse of bubbles

Minimum Flow Protection Methods

What is it ?

Why is it important?

Minimum continuous flow is the

lowest flow rate at which a
centrifugal pump may be operated
on a continuous basis without
exceeding the design constraints of
the manufacturer or the equipment
specifier.

Minimum flow protection is

vital upon pump start up and low
demand conditions and for
continuous running of pump.

Continuous Recirculation System

This is achieved by using a fixed

orifice as the pump by-pass.
Recirculation is operating
continuously without any regard
for flow through the pump.
It does protect the pump from
low flow but it is wasteful of energy

Instrument Controlled System

Relies on other valve accessories

to function well in order for it to
be efficient. Its expensive and has
too many components.

Automatic Recirculation System

The valve is flow operated and does

not require any external power
source to operate.
