Ted Annemann writing in Jinx No 19 alludes to an obscure Al
Baker manuscript that Annemann had seen when he was 17 years
of age, at which time the manuscript was already old. The
manuscript contained some of the first writings by a well
experienced and well informed magician. It was called Al Bakers
Mental Effects. This was a remarkable collection of ideas and

Effect 1 - Performer gives out a sealed envelope which contains
a prediction. The envelope is ungimmicked and contains only one
straight plain language prediction. Performer then has anyone in
the audience choose a book from a shelf of books which contains a
number of books by different authors and titles. The spectator
chooses only one book!( he does not choose 5 books and lays
down 3, for example.) Performer calls attention to the other books
on the shelf and the fact that they are of different titles and
authors. May be as many as 9 books! Spectator is next instructed
to open the book secretly to any page and to choose any
paragraph. Performer without knowing to what page the
spectator has opened the book, tells him what he is reading, word
for word and the entire paragraph! For the climax, the prediction
envelope is opened and the prediction read. It predicted the title
and author of the book plus one of the words chosen by the
spectator! The prediction may be printed in a newspaper weeks
before! Gentlemen, the book that the spectator chooses can be read
through by anyone and nothing found amiss. The book may be
one written by a famous person dealing in phlosophy! There are
no 2 pages alike in the main text of the book. There are no pictures
or photos in the book. Just text. Cards, dice orcounters are not
used. Only the books are used. The spectator does not write
anything down and does not have to talk. This is a one-man effect.

Effect 2 - Spectator takes a book into another room and secretly opens it to any page and says
absolutely nothing, just chooses any paragraph or chapter and the performer tells him what he
is reading without knowing the page turned to! The effect can be done over the telephone from
another city!
Effect 3 - Three persons are each given one of three books. They secretly and indivually
choose a page and choose a word and do not write the page down or tell anyone what page
each has indivually chosen. Performer reveals all 3 words. There are no short or crimped pages
in the book. Spectator has an absolute free choice of any page!
Effect 4 - Spectator is given a free choice of one of three books and has a free choice of any
page in the book. Performer predicts the word chosen in a sealed envelope!

The Damned Thing

The Effect: A spectator is given a book and is told to secretly
choose any page and to pick any paragraph. He is then told to
concentrate intently on the first four or five words and to spell
each word silently to himself. The Mentalist reveals each word
correctly and then the entire paragraph! NOTE: the performer

The Glass Box

A glass see-through box which is locked and sealed and which contains several folded pieces of
paper (3), is given to the committee chairman to hold until the day of the show. For the climax
of the show the Mentalist calls for the box. This is displayed to the audience and the folded
papers inside the box are clearly seen by all. The box is unsealed and unlocked and anyone
from the audience is told to take out the papers and read them. These prove to be predictions
of events that have just happened and can be verified by the newspapers. In essence, this is a
Headline Prediction stunt. It is obvious to the audience that the Mentalist never sticks his hand
into the box after it is sealed and the Mentalist never touches the papers until they are verified!

The Headless Horseman

Back in 1986 I fooled Al Mann badly with my driving a Car with
covered with Cardboard and newspaper taped over the complete
windshield. He wrote about this on page 9 of The fabulous feats
of Jason Michaels. At that time he mentioned nobody knew my
secret, which was correct. Many years later he wrote the book the
Headless Horseman. IN it he stated that many top performers of
all old knew the secret of blindfolding cars and driving them
although to his knowledge no one had actually done it. Al forgot
that in his own book 7 years earlier he gave me credit for actually
pulling this off. I never told Al my secret. However he did devise
two methods that were remarkably close to my method. Method
One, Involves using black water paint and having all the
windows painted black (it will wash off later). You are blindfolded and get in the car with all
the windows painted. Yet you drive the car several blocks. At the end everything can once
again be examined. Method Two: I love this presentation, although the method isn't as clever
as my newspaper taped over the windshield. You agree to do a blindfolded drive and are
blindfolded using the None So Blind method or any other blindfold. They lead you to the
car.HOWEVER YOU ARE UNAWARE, That the cardboard sun shade is over the windshild.
You proceed to drive the car anyway despite the cardboard sunshade is still in place. I love
this idea for presentation and tip my hat to Al Mann for coming up with idea. Of course the
press will report you drove with cardboard over the windshield. Actually the method I used
was a combination of both methods that Al explains in this book. The proper blindfold drive
can get you worldwide publicity. When I performed as Jason Michaels, my driving a car
blindfolded with cardboard, got me arrested and the story was covered worldwide. AP picked
it up and the story appeared in thousands of newspapers. Al Mann covered and reprinted
many of the articles in the book he did about me. The Feats of Jason Michaels. Look At the
Worldwide Publicity I Got doing this, look closely and you'll see AP after the articles showing
that AP sent the story worldwide. Warning! You can duplicate (or closely duplicate) the effect
I did. Even though a few dozen people bought the book, neither Al or myself at that time
knew anyone else who actually had the nerve to do this. Its one thing to read a method, its
another to do it.

Al recommended doing this stuff at a fair ground. I did the trick on a public highway! That is
why I got arrested and all the great publicity! The method is dangerous. In all my years I've
only taught my secret to two other mentalist. Neither one had the nerve to actually try it.

Lexicon phenomena
This 1976 Al Mann Exclusive is widely regarded as one of his
most ingenious book tests. From an "Enrich your vocabulary" list
inside the covers of a dictionary, two spectators secretly agree to
think of one of 400 word pairs. Each thinks of one of the words,
looking it up in the dictionary to be certain of its meaning. The
mentalist does not know the word pair they chose and does not
handle the dictionary. He may be at some distance from the
spectators as they look up the words. But once they have
ascertained the words' meanings, he is able to tell them what they
are thinking! Nothing written down, nothing to hide. You get Al
Mann's signed instructions with his diabolical secret, plus the
dictionary, and that certain something that makes the secret
practical. Al Mann's works were never inexpensive, and this was no exception. To preserve
the secret, he had the instructions printed by two printers in different states, so that even they
would not know the secret! Al Mann knew the value of a good idea, and this is one of his best.

Marks of St.Germain
The manuscript deals with the lost art of making marks appear
on your arm and palm. Mann explains how to make messages
appear in blood red ink on your arm as you rub it without using a
special chemical. More important are the methods Mann has
developed to make spirit marks or stigmata appear on your
hands or palms. This is all based the famous St.Germain who was
able to make the sign of the cross appear on his palm in a holy
white color. Using techniques developed by Al Mann, you can
have your palm examined and even washed! There are no
chemicals or preparation on the palm. Yet at will you can make a
white cross materialize on your palm just like the saints of old did
(probably using this method!) There is more, Mann describes how
to have your palm examined and then an ungimmicked slate is place on your palm. Marks

have used it to knock an audience dead with stunned silence.
Here is what Al says about this effect: I consider this effect as on
the greatest test that a Mentalist can present. I do it in my shows.
The concept of the test is so strong tht your audience receeds
into profound silence. They have never seen the effect before!
Sophisticated spectators who have seen Mentalist several times
know that if they write something down, the mentalist will
know what they wrote. They don't know how, but they know he
read it somehow. With the principle of Tesseract, the members of
the audience WRITE NOTHING! Therein lies the mystery. THE
DEADLY EFFECT! The Mentalist shows 3 business cards and says they contain predictions of
things to come. He says he is willing to share the predictions with 3 members of the audience

sealed envelope. It is ungimmicked and unprepared in any way.
The person may examine it to his heart's content then hangs on
to it. The master psychic (that's you) ask the person to call out
the name of any person that is dead or the name of any living
person that is important to them. Showing both hands to be
empty with nothing hidden, the magician rips open the end of
the envelope and has THE PERSON REACH IN A REMOVE A

This is quite a find for the collector or mentalist who enjoys Al
Mann's great work. It's about 13 years old and is officially titled
AME Catalogue One for Miracle Makers. Practically everything
he has written is in this book. You'll be able to complete your
collection by figuring out what you a missing as well as being
quite annoyed that you can't locate some of these books
anymore. It is 8 1/2 x 11, spiral bound and about 90 pages (front
and back printed) long. Also included is a 1998 price list, 4 loose
pages and 7 pages stapled to the back cover. Al sent out
supplements when new books came out. In the catalog are a few
check marks next to titles in ink. This is not in mint condition but
was used as a reference source by a mentalist - thus it does
indeed look used - rough edges, wrinkles, some bends. But the material within is quite
interesting. Dunninger material too. Even if you never get the actual books, you'll find your
mind thinking about the effects that are described. Did you know he introduced a new gem
for the mentalist called O'DANEVEN'S SECRET?

The Quick and the Dead

The book deals exclusively with Living and Dead tests. It gives a
detailed history of the effect and how David Abbott was fooled
by mediums doing this. Learn inner secrets from the mediums
on how to reveal the names of dead relatives. Simply ingenious
methods that will startle you with their cleverness. Mann goes
into much detail on these test and ways to learn the names of
dead relatives. Some of these methods were later revamped by
Mann and released as other effects but using the basic methods.
Mann also teaches you a creepy effect, called Empty Graves,
where a person writes the name of a dead person on one of
twenty UNMARKED BILLETS. They are dropped in hat and
mixed by the VIP. He attempts to divine which billet contains
the dead name, but fails, no matter how many times he chooses a billet. Yet the psychic,
quickly reaches in and gets the correct vibs and removes the slip containing the dead name.
Not only that but then reveals the dead person's name. If the performer is so inclined at this
point he can go into a trance a give a message to the person from the dead relative.

Chapter 1: discusses the most amazing principle in the art of
the mentalist, with a wide avenue for miracles. Headings include;
Where Eagles Perch, the Tesseract, Panoramas of Thought and
Mass Telepathy. All of the effects are of the one-man dynamic

The material in this chapter came to light after "the Apodosis"

An unbelievable book test. A real brainbuster. Description: Any person secretely choses ANY
WORD ON ANY PAGE. The Mentalist divines or predicts the word. Even more unbelievable
are the conditions. The spectator holds the book in his own hands and has an ABSOLUTE
FREE CHOISE of ANY PAGE and ANY WORD ON THE PAGE. It is the " Uniword ". The
Mentalist stands several feet away and never approaches the spectator while he is choosing
the word !! The test can be repeat. There are many different words on each page. In
presentation, any person is called to choose any page and to read off words on the page.
Many different words are called ! Next a second person is called to do the same secretly and

From the hard to find Zodiac Series. This is Book 3 in the
series.Mann says in this book. "I stumbled onto these secrets so I
can say they have never appeared in print before. This is

these secrets can baffle anyone silly!"
This treatise explains an arcane secret that Al Mann discovered.
You have people write messages on billets and fold them. The
billets are picked up with tweezers and set on fire. No you don't
dunk them in any chemical to make them transparent. The billets
are opaque. You pick them up with super thin tweezers and
NEVER touch them with your hands. They are not torn up first.
The folded billet is burned yet you can reveal the contents! This is a new method that will fool
the smartest magician! A dollar bill is borrowed, the spectator is ask to remember the last 4 or
5 digits. He folds it in quarters and you take it with tweezers never touching the bill with
your hand. The bill is set on fire and totally consumed. Yet you reveal the serial number! No
switching of the bill, only one bill used (of course you have to give the person back another
dollar for the one you burnt, but imagine this in a newspaper office!) Yes several people can
write on billets and you burn them ALL at the same time, yet you reveal the contents. YES
DO IT WITH SEALED ENVELOPES.Message are written on cards and sealed in envelopes.
The envelopes are burned with no switches. You reveal the contents. The envelope are totally
burned to ashes. This is not the old idea of having wide tongs that prevent the corner from
burning. You use thin tweezers a hold the envelope over a flame and it burns up yet you
know the complete contents!

When Thoughts Collide

A design-duplication effect that works automatically! Mentalist shows his audience a book of
designs. He states that all the designs are different except one. He will not tell the audience
which one of the designs are duplicated in the book. But he is going to have the audience find
it by subliminal perception (or what have you.) Two pages in the book are chosen at random
by two members of the audience widely separated. They draw their chosen designs on slates.
When the slates are shown, they are identical! The book is ungimmicked. All the designs are
different. There is no forcing. Spectators have a free choice. You do not know ahead of time
what design will be chosen. A one-man effect. You will get a hardcover book of many designs
plus the instructions. Use your own slates.
The Wocus Legacy

The principle known as "The Wocus Legacy" was first
discovered and applied to billet work by Al Mann. The gimmick
