Description:
Personality traits refer to enduring characteristics that describe an individuals behaviour. Apart
from the Big five traits, these are some more specific attributes that are powerful predictors of
behaviour in organizations. They include core self-evaluation, Machiavellianism, narcissism, selfmonitoring, risk taking, proactive personality and other orientation.
The video given presents three of the above mentioned personality traits.
Narcissism: Loki from the movie Avengers
Narcissism describes a person who has a grandiose sense of self importance, requires excessive
admiration, has a sense of entitlement and is arrogant.
In the movie, Loki places himself above all and thinks everyone else to be inferior. Because of his
narcissism he was able to rise to power. In the first scene, Loki displays his power and makes
everyone kneel before him. He then proceeds to humiliate them and rants that it is human beings
natural state to be inferior to him. In second scene, Loki was facing Hulk, who is obviously more
powerful than him. But because of his narcissistic character he was unable to realise this and still
perceives him to be superior. This ultimately leads to his downfall.
Risk Taking: Jake sully from the movie Avatar
Risk taking ability differentiates people in their willingness to take chances, a quality that affects how
much time and information they need to make a decision. In this scene, Jake and his navi comrades
are faced with a very challenging situation in which they had to fight the human army. To win against
the mighty forces he must win the navi populations faith. The Navi regard the rider of Turok as a
natural leader. Hence Jake takes the risk of taming the Turok. He succeeds and comes back to the
people riding the turok. This inspires the Navi, and Jake summons an army to wage war against the
human army. He was able to quickly calculate his strength and their chances to win which made the
difference.
Summary:
The characters shown in the video display an intense level of above mentioned personality traits. But
this not may be the case in real life or in organizations. Generally personality traits seen in the
organizations will be subtle and also will be a combination of more than one personality traits. Like
the example shown for Risk taking (Jake Sully from avatar) also has a proactive personality.
