An excellent manager taps into talents and resources in order to support and bring out the best
in others. An outstanding manager evokes possibility in others.
Good managers are problem solvers. Although managers always need to plan, organize, direct,
and control, they need to do so situation by situation. The resulting challenge facing managers
is to identify, understand and explain critical contingencies. For managers, this challenge has
three aspects. First, Managers must develop diagnostic skills that enable them to identify
situational demands and characteristics. Second, they must identify a management style
appropriate for the demands of the situation. Finally, they must develop the flexibility to move
from one managerial style to another as demands change.
