Description: An inspirational poster featuring the beauty of music.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop
Date: December 8, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To blend two photos together with a clipping mask.
Process: In Photoshop, I added both images to a new document

and adjusted the levels and brightness of both photos. Then, I

created a clipping mask and blended the two photos together.
Using the brush tool, I added some texture to the design and
darkened the center portion so that I could add some typography.
Using the eyedropper tool, I selected a lighter color from the clouds
to use in the text. Finally, I adjusted the opacity of the text so that it
would blend into the photo.

Event
Ad

Description: An informationl ad for a local fundraiser.

Programs Used: Microsoft Word
Date: December 8, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To design an informational ad using Microsoft Word.
Process: After sketching a few ideas on paper, I first inserted

the image that I had scanned and played around with the size
on the paper. I then began choosing colors from the photo that I
thought worked well together. I knew what I wanted my title to say
and had a list of the information I wanted included in the ad, so I
began adding text boxes with the title, date-time-place, and the
list of vendors. Once I had the basic information in my document,
I began moving things around to see what looked good visually. I
really liked the vertical purple line in the image and wanted that to
be off-centered in the ad so I deliberately placed the photo on the
left. I decided to use a purple block behind the text that would be
perpendicular to the line in the image. Then, I began creating boxes
with color that would effectively contain the information I wanted
included in the ad. Finally, I changed the colors of the fonts to make
them stand out on the page.

Subway
Art
Description: A printable subway art design, featuring a scripture
found in Joshua 1:9.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Date: November 11, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a colorful design using the scripture provided.
Process: Using Photoshop, I created a textured background for the

design. Then, using Illustrator, I began adding the text, word by word,
so that the words of the scripture would not only be readable in the
design, but also attractive to look at from a distance. I created all of
the words in white at first, and later added some color to a few select
words to add emphasis and contrast. Once I had laid out all of the
words in the design, I added the textured background and finished it
off with a subtle textured overlay to unify the design.

Brochure

Description: A Christmas-themed brochure featuring the designs of the

company, Jolly Christmas Digital Art.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Date: December 8, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a two-sided, retro-themed brochure, which

provides information about the products created by a digital art company.

Process: Using Illustrator, I first designed the logo using the colors red, lime,

teal and brown. After selecting four appropriate images that I would use in
my design, I used Photoshop to edit them and adjust their colors so that they
would coordinate with the color scheme I had chosen. I clipped the Santa
image and adjusted the vibrancy so that it would fit in with the rest of the
design. Then, I placed each image in their respective spots on the pages.
Since I wanted to create a retro-looking brochure, I added repeating bold,
solid-filled triangular shapes to each page. To add some contrast, I used
several not-so-perfect circles to my pages to break up the strong diagonal
lines. Once I had my elements where I wanted them, I added my text. Using
the paragraph styling tool and the text wrapping tool, I manipulated the text
so that it would flow nicely with the images and elements I had used. I also
incorporated some retro stars in my design that I had created for my logo.
Finally, I used the effects feature and added a light drop shadow to the
Santa image, which added some depth.

Logos

Description: Three unique logo mock-ups for a digital

scrapbooking company.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator

Date: October 30, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To design three unique logos for the same company.
Process: Before I began creating my three designs, I knew that I

wanted to use a paint brush in one of the logos. So, I used the pen
tool to draw some simple lines for the brush and then filled in the
brush portion with the color red. I wanted the word Art to stand
out so I chose a font that would make it look like that word was
painted in red by the brush. For the middle logo, I used the rounded
rectangle tool to create a blue background. Then, I added the
white text and arranged it so that each of the letters ran off the
edge of the rectangle. For the bottom logo,

Business
Card
Description: A professional business card, front and back,
for a digital design company.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Date: November 7, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To design the front and back of a business card
using a companys logo and information.

Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to design the logo and the

background with the repeating words WORDARTWORLD

and set the opacity to 10% to soften them against the black
background and the white background. Once I had created
the logo, I used Adobe InDesign to design the business card by
placing the logo and the background images into the entire
background of the document. Finally, I added the contact
information, the black line and repeated the red, yellow and
blue circles on the back of the card.

Letterhead

Description: Letterhead design for a digital word art company.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Date: November 7, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a letterhead that would coordinate with
the company logo.

Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to design the logo and the

background with the repeating words WORDARTWORLD and set

the opacity to 10% to soften them against the black background.
I chose two different, but complementary fonts in the logo. Once
I had created the logo, I used Adobe InDesign to design the
stationary by placing the logo and the background I had created
into the document. Finally, I added the black lines, the contact information, and repeated the three circles in red, yellow and blue
at the bottom of the stationary.

Photo
Design
Description: Printed poster design showcasing my photography skills,
my photo editing skills and my typography skills.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop,

Date: October 17, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a motivational poster using a high-quality
image and appropriate typography.

Process: With the idea of using this time quote in mind, I gathered

some props and set up my photo shoot. I knew that I wanted to use an
analogous color scheme with warm colors and create an earthy feel
for my final design, so I decided to incorporate a bamboo mat into my
photo. I also selected materials made of wood and metal to further
complement my intended theme and message. Using my Canon
camera, I took a variety of shots in different lighting and with different
arrangements, trying to capture the clock in the foreground, with some
other elements in the background. After taking over one hundred
photos, I settled on one final image because I liked the sharp contrast
of the clock in the foreground compared with the blurred elements
in the background. Using Photoshop, I edited the photo by adjusting
the levels, the vibrance and the colors so that the final image had a
brightness to it. Then, I used the sharpening tool to accentuate the X
in the clock. I knew I wanted to mirror the ampersand in the photo
with a large, bold ampersand in the text, so I found an ampersand that
looked similar to the metal ampersand in the background. And, when
taking the photo, I intentionally placed the hands of the clock so that
they would serve as arrows, directing the viewers eyes to the important
pieces of the design. Finally, I added some diagonal shapes and the
text with a bold, red ampersand at the bottom of the design.

Word
Art

Description: A printable piece of art for the home, which

features a portion of the scripture, Moroni 10:32.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Date: October 4, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a beautiful, printable piece of art that
could be used in the home or on a card front.

Process: Using Illustrator, I first typed out each word in my chosen

font that I wanted to use from the scripture. Then, I enhanced
each word with some decorative glyphs that coordinate with the
font. I drew a black circle and added a capitalized word over it
to break up the space. Using a different, but complementary font,
I typed the scripture reference at the bottom. Once my word art
design was complete, I used Photoshop to create the background
for my design. Finally, I merged the two layers together and
added a textured effect over both the background and the
word art to make it look as if the words had been printed on the
canvas-style background.

Web
Page

Description: A web page for a digital art company created created using
HTML edits and CSS styling.

Programs Used: Notepad++, HTML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop

Date: December 8, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a web page, which features the design process behind the company logo and to demonstrate a working knowledge of HTML
and CSS.

Process: After I had sized my logo image appropriately and created a

folder for my project, I used Notepad++ to create my web page. The first step
was to mark up all of my content in HTML and insert my logo. Then, I attached
a pre-made CSS document and linked it to my HTML. Using Photoshop, I sampled the colors in my logo so that I could recreate them on my web page.
Once I had the basics of the page written up and in the order that I wanted
them, I made some edits to my CSS document. I changed the fonts, using a
simple sans-serif font for the title and one of the headings; I used a simple serif
font for the rest of the text. Also, because the color red I had used in my logo
accentuates the word Art, I wanted to employ the same method in my text
by making my main points bold and set them to the color red. I also italicized
my blog link at the bottom of the page. Finally, I adjusted the padding on
the title block and around my logo and The Design Process header to give
them adequate space and to set them apart from the other text.

Poster
Design
Description: A printed color poster for a church-sponsored activity.
Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop
Date: December 1, 2014
Course: Comm. 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create an informational and attractive poster to
advertise for an upcoming church activity.

Process: After collecting all of the information required for the poster, I

created a canvas-style background in a high-resolution document using

several different overlays and textures. Then, I selected four bright colors
that would be appropriate for the themes of the dance: CANDYLAND,
WINTER WONDERLAND, TOYLAND, AND ROYAL LAND. I wanted the
poster to have a subway art feel to it, so I began laying out all of the
information in blocks down the page, with the name of the activity at
the top and the date at the bottom. To break up the text, I added a
bold red circle, some dividing lines and a simple line art castle with some
snowflakes. Once I had created the poster, I added a subtle texture
overlay to unify the design.

Flier

Description: A printed grayscale flier for an upcoming conference.

Programs Used: Adobe InDesign
Date: October 4, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To design an attractive, printable flyer using appropriate and
effective design skills.

Process: I created four unique sketches on paper before creating this flier in

Adobe InDesign. I decided to incorporate several of my original sketches into

one final design. Using three circle blocks, I added the information that had
been provided to me in separate components on the page because there
was a lot of information to display; I felt that it would make it more legible if the
information was isolated in separate containers. I deliberately used the photo of
the three students because I liked the alignment of their faces on the page, and
I liked that the photo represented both male and female candidates. During the
design process, I arranged the elements of the flier in several different ways and
ultimately decided that this arrangement worked best overall.

Wall
Art
Description: A printable family-themed piece of art for the home.
Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop
Date: October 15, 2014
Course: Comm 130, Section 12
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Objective: To create a piece of art that could be displayed in the home.
Process: After opening a large, poster-sized document in Photoshop, I

created the textured background. Then, in a separate document, I added

the decorative elements and the text in an attarctive way using only black.
Then, I merged all of the elements together and placed that image over
the canvas background. I then merged those together and used the fill
tool to add some color to some of the elements. Finally, I added a subtle
textured overlay over the entire design to give it a printed look.
