INTRODUCTION
This manual is applicable for both the Detecto Pak - InfraRed (DP-IR)
Mobile Kit and the Optical Methane Detector (OMD) System.
Equipment Required:
Computer
DP-IR Instrument for DP-IR Mobile Kit
Heath Survey Tracker Kit HPN 103575-0
Kit Includes: Serial Cable HPN 100128-0
Hard Copy Manual HPN 103565-0
Heath Survey Tracker Install CD HPN 103571-0
GPS (Global Positioning System) Receiver Device
Note: Any device that produces NMEA-0183 (National Marine
Electronics Association) output will work. Usually, these
devices ship with drivers that need to be installed.
Note 1 The functionality of the Heath Survey Tracker program has
been verified using: the Garmin Mobile PC Kit that includes Garmins
high-sensitivity GPS 20x Receiver; the HOLUX GPS Receiver GR213U; and, the DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40.
Note 2 Other manufacturers of GPS receivers may be used with
the Heath Survey program. Any GPS device that produces NMEA0183 output will work. Usually, devices ship with drivers that need
to be installed.
Note 3 For the USB GPS device to communicate with the Heath
Survey Tracker program, a program that creates a virtual serial port
for a connected USB device will need to be loaded to your computer.

Note 4 The Spanner Application by Garmin will only work on Garmin
USB GPS Receivers. Spanner creates a virtual serial port and is
only compatible with Windows XP. For other operating systems, the
GpsGate program can be loaded to your computer to create the
virtual serial port.
Note 5 The Heath Survey Tracker Install CD, HPN 103571-0, is
loaded with the files for a digital copy of this manual; Survey Tracker
1.2 program; GpsGate 2.6; and the Spanner Application.

Chapter I
Note 1 - Do not connect Garmin USB GPS 20x Receiver or any other
GPS receiver to your computer at this time. Refer to the device
manufacturers manual for any specified instruction as to when
it is ok to connect the USB GPS receiver.
Note 2 - The following software installation instructions for the Survey
Tracker Program, GpsGate 2.6, and the Spanner Application
are located on the Heath Survey Tracker Install CD.
Note 3 - Follow page four installation instructions only for HOLUX
USB GPS Receiver GR-213U.

Installation Instructions for the Survey Tracker Program:


1. Insert the Heath Survey Tracker Install CD, HPN 103571-0, into the
computers CD drive.
2. Open setup_survey_1.2.
3. At Open File-Security Warning window, click Run button.
4. Select the language to use during the installation. Click Ok.
5. At the Welcome to the Survey Tracker Setup Wizard, click Next.
6. Select Destination Location window, click Next.
7. Select Start Menu Folder window, click Next.
8. At the Select Database Directory window, click Next or click
Browse to select the directory that will be used to store the database
file. Then click Next.
9. At the Browse For Folder window, select a folder or make a new
folder. Click Ok.

10. Click Next again to continue.
11. Select the Java Directory. Click Next.
Note: Select 1.6 or higher
12. Click Install at the Ready to Install window.
13. When Setup has finished installing Survey Tracker on your computer,
click Finish to exit Setup.
14. If you wish, you can create a shortcut to Survey Tracker on your
desktop.

Installation Instructions for GpsGate 2.6 Application:


Note 1 Only compatible with Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000/NT/9x/ME
operating systems.
Note 2 GpsGate is a program that creates a virtual serial port for a
connected USB device. This allows for communication to the
Heath Survey Tracker program.
1. Insert the Heath Survey Tracker Install CD, HPN 103571-0, into the
computers CD drive.
2. Open the GpsGate Client application.
3. A Franson GpsGate 2.6 Install Shield Wizard box will appear. Click
Next.
4. Follow the prompts until Successfully installed.
5. Remove disc when completed.

Installation Instructions for the Spanner Application:
Note: The Spanner Application can be downloaded from the Heath
Survey Tracker Install CD, HPN 103571-0, or, you can search for it
on the Garmin website, garmin.com. If downloading from Garmins
website, please use steps 1.1 through 1.4. If downloading from the
Heath Survey Tracker Install CD, run Spanner_21.exe and skip
to step 2 below.
1. Go to www.Garmin.com
1. In Search box, type: GPS 20x then click Go.
2. Click on Garmin Additional Software
3. Scroll Down to find GPS 18x January 2, 2011 and click on
GPS 18x
Note: The Spanner Application under GPS 18x is also for GPS 20x.
As of the date of this publication, a spanner application is not
listed under GPS20x; perhaps later.
4. Click on Download for Spanner Application under Additional
Software.
2. Follow prompts for Spanner installation.
Note: It is recommended to create a shortcut for the Spanner Application to
automatically start after logging onto your computer. Place shortcut at
location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\
Startup
3. When prompted to select a COM port, select one other than the
COM port being used by the serial cable and USB Garmin GPS 20x
Receiver.
4. Click Quit after COM port selected.

Installation Instructions for the HOLUX USB GPS Receiver


GR-213U Drivers:
Note: Reference the QUICK GUIDE Getting STARTED
instructions. Installation instruction 1 requires the
HOLUX Tool CD. Ignore Note 2. Use GPSViewer to test
it.
1. Insert HOLUX Tool CD into computers CD drive.
2. Click on GPS Receiver.
3. Search for GPS Receiver GR-213/GR-213U by clicking on
arrows.
4. Click on USB Data Cable Driver to load drivers and install
HOLUX GPS USB DEVICE on your computer.
5. Using the InstallShield Wizard, follow the prompts to install HOLUX GPS USB DEVICE on your computer.
6. Next box appearing should say: InstallShield Wizard Complete InstallShield already successfully to install PL-2303
USB-to-Serial driver. Please press [Finish] button to close
and out of InstallShield.
1. Follow instructions here.
7. Click on Exit.
8. Remove the HOLUX Tool CD from computer CD drive.

Survey Instructions:
Note: Prior to the use of the Heath Survey Tracker program, ensure
software and drivers are installed on your computer for the
Survey Tracker program, for the GpsGate application or the
Spanner application, and USB GPS Receiver device. Remember,
with the Spanner application being placed in the Windows
Startup folder, Spanner will automatically be started after
logging onto your computer.
Make the following connections:
Attach a serial cable between the computer and the DPIR instrument
or OMD Operator Display.
Attach the USB end of the GPS Receiver device to the computer.
Start: Log onto your computer
1. Power-On DP-IR instrument and allow countdown to end. For OMD
System, the unit needs to be fully warmed up for about one hour.
2. For DP-IR, perform a Self-Test. If the OK icon is displayed, the
instrument passed the Self-Test and is ready for use. If the RETRY
icon is displayed, then the instrument failed the Self-Test; press the up
arrow button to retry the Self-Test.
Note: The DP-IR instrument may need 10 to 15 minutes more to stabilize
for Self-Test to pass. For OMD System, perform system evaluation
per OMD Users Manual.
3. Open Survey Tracker.
4. Under the Sign In tab (see Figure 1):
1. Username: type in or select your name.
2. Select appropriate Temperature (degree F), Wind, and Cloud.
3. Select Sensor Model.
4. Type in or select Sensor S/N.
5. Type in or select GPS Model.
6. Type in or select Survey Name.

5. Click on New Session button.
Note 1: After clicking on New Session button, Survey Tracker will
automatically switch to the Home tab. At the Home tabs
bottom left corner, you will see Starting Sensor communications
or Starting GPS communications. You may have to wait about
3 minutes and 40 seconds for it to say Ready or it may be
instant.
Note 2: After COM port configuration, under the Config tab, the Sensor
Port and GPS Port are automatically connected. Then just click
on the Record button to start recording gas data.
6. Under the Config tab (see Figure 2):
Note 1: While Scanning for Ports, do not click mouse on anything or
else, an hour glass will appear on the screen which may lengthen the
amount of time to scan for ports.
Note 2: Under this Config tab you can also stop the connection by clicking
the Stop button.
1. Select Speed Format: MPH or km/h.
2. Enter the alarm value as set on the DP-IR Instrument or OMD
Operator Display for Alarm Value. Click Update button. A
Confirm box appears stating Alarm Value updated. Click
Ok.
3. Type in COM# or select scan for ports for Sensor Port or GPS
Port. After scanning for ports, click down arrow button and
make a COM selection for each port. There must be a different
COM selected for each port. Click Connect.
Note 1: May take about 3 minutes to scan for ports.
Note 2: After first time configuring Sensor Port and/or GPS
Port to desired COM#, connection is automatic. Then just
click Record under the Home tab to start recording
gas data.
4. Starting Sensor Communications or Starting GPS Communications
will then appear at bottom left corner of screen. You may have
to wait about 3 minutes for Ready to appear at bottom left
corner of screen.

7. Under Home tab (see Figures 3a and 3b):
1. Click on Record button to start survey tracker recording.
2. A line will appear on graph. A green line on graph and a green
dot below graph indicates Gas Level OK (see Figure 3a).
3. The displayed reading on the instrument will be the same
number value on survey tracker as Gas Value. The value is
also displayed on the line graph with time and ppm graphed.
The graph continues to scroll until recording is stopped.
4. When a high gas level is read, the line and graph will turn red
and a red square along with a red Gas Level High will appear (see Figure 3b).
5. To stop recording, just click on Stop button under Home
tab.

8. To disconnect from the Sensor Port and the GPS Port, click
on the Stop buttons under the Config tab (see Figure 2).
9. To view the alarmed data click on Alarms tab (see Figure 4).
Here you will see such data as gas value, date, time, latitude,
longitude, and speed (MPH or km/h).

10. Under the GPS tab, you will see information such as latitude,
longitude, and speed (see Figure 5).

11. Go to Sign In tab to end session by clicking Sign Out.


12. After Stop recording, to print out data or save to a file (see
Figure 6):
Note: After opening Survey Tracker, existing surveys can be
exported and viewed or printed without signing in. Go to
Export tab and perform steps 1 thru 6 below, then go to
where the file was saved.
1. Go to Export tab and select a Survey or surveys to export.
To select more than one survey at a time, hold the Control
Key (CTRL) down and use the mouse to click on the desired surveys.
2. To retrieve data that triggered the alarm, check box next to
Alarm Only? or uncheck box to retrieve all data.
3. Click on File; a Save window opens; select where to
Save in:
Note: It may take several minutes to download data; it is recommended to download once or twice a week depending on
the number of surveys being performed. Downloading in
multiple groups instead of all at once will help, but it is the
customers discretion.
4. Type in a File name:; select a Save as type:
5. Click the Save button.
6. Click the Export button. A Confirm box appears stating
Export has been completed. Click Ok.

13. To view or print data go to place where file was saved (see
Sample below).

Note: The version of Microsoft Excel will determine how many


rows of data can be viewed or printed. It is recommended to
download once or twice a week depending on the number of
surveys being performed. Downloading in groups instead of
all at once will help, but it is the customers discretion.
