Background
The GPS protocol includes the National Marine Electronic Association 0183 (NMEA0183)
and the Trimble ASCII Interface Protocol (TAIP). The NMEA0183 and the TAIP are both
GPS communication protocols in data format.
z NMEA0183, enacted by the NMEA, is a data protocol that complies with industrial
standards. The protocol is based on all ASCII characters, so it is not readable for
common users. NMEA0183 provides certain customized options for user; therefore, the
protocol is flexible.
z TAIP is dedicated for Trimble GPS that supports printable ASCII characters. Therefore,
TAIP is readable, the flexibility, however, is not as good as NMEA.
Process
To connect a GPS to a PC, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Connect the GPS to the serial port on the PC through a cable.
Step 2 Start the GPS and set the GPS protocol, NMEA0183 or TAIP with the GPS operating system.

9.1 Overview
Based on the test devices, test items are categorized into two types, namely, UE and scanner.
A test scenario consists of a set of test items. You can set the repetition times in a scenario, and combine
multiple test scenarios. The test plan required by a specific test procedure is placed in a test scenario. In
this way, you can conveniently manage the test plan. When a test is carried out, the program invokes the
test plan that is configured in the current test scenario. The test plans are worked out on the basis of their
sequences configured in the test scenario.

10 Test Procedures
Section Describes
10.1 Overview
Before the test, connect the required external devices and preset the test plan for the UE and
scanner. When the test is started, the system automatically implements the test plan, records
the test data, and saves the data in logfiles (.gen files). The logfiles can be used to play back
the test data and reproduce the test.
During the test, the implementation of the testing plan can be monitored on real-time basis.
Certain test results are recorded in files with extension .phu. You can choose Logfile > Import Data to
convert the data file in .phu format into the data file in .gen format.
During the test, the call waiting function of the terminal must be disabled.
Starting a Test
If you already set the Probe to save log files in the system configuration, the Probe prompts
you to save log files before the test. For details about how to save log files, see section 8.2.1
"Setting the Saving Mode of Log Files." Otherwise, the Probe does not save log files.
You can click the icon on the Standard toolbar. to start a test:
Stopping a Test
When the test is completed, or you are about to leave the testing vehicle for a long time, you
need to end the testing task and disconnect the external devices.
when ending the test task, first terminate the calls or data service connections of the terminal
under test, and then terminate testing task and disconnect the external equipment. In this
way, you can ensure the integrity of the recorded data.
You can terminate the entire test task or a single test item.
z Terminate the entire test task
Pausing/Resuming Records
During the test, you may encounter traffic jam or traffic stop signals and so have to stay in the
same place for a long time. To avoid collecting similar information at the same test point, you
can pause the recording of the data. When you continue to move forward, resume the data
recording.
Click the button on the Control tab page in the navigation area to pause data recording;
click the button again to resume the data recording.
Pausing/Resuming a Screen
When exceptions occur during the test, you need to check the parameters of the time. In this
situation, you need to pause a screen, check the parameters displayed, and then locate the
problems. After the problem diagnosis, resume the screen. Pausing a screen does not stop the
recording of the data.
Click the button on the Control tab page in the navigation area to pause data recording;
click the button again to resume the data recording.
Capturing a Window
During the test, you can capture the window that is in active state. The captured image is

11.4 Map Window The symptoms and solutions of data windows.
11.5 Data Displaying Problem The common problems and solutions of displaying data in
of the Map Window the map window.
Solution
One of the following causes may lead to the license checking failure and the system startup
failure. In addition, the solutions to each exception are as follows:
z The dongle is connected improperly.
− Check whether the dongle is connected.
− Check whether the connection between the dongle and the parallel port or USB port
is normal.
− Check whether the dongle driver is installed correctly. It is recommended that you
reinstall the dongle driver.
z The system time is changed before the Probe is started.
Do not change the system time before starting the Probe. Because the dongle controls the
authority through the system time. The system time must be the current time or later than
the current time.
z The dongle expires.
The license has a validity period. If the license expires, you cannot use the license any
more. Thus, you need to apply for a new license.
z The GENEX Shared components are installed improperly.
Check whether the GENEX Shared components are installed properly. It is
recommended that you reinstall the GENEX Shared components.
If you have installed other software that also requires the dongle and the Probe cannot be started
normally, you can infer that the two dongles conflict with each other. In this case, you need to uninstall
the Sentinal Drive from the Control Panel and reinstall the GENEX Shared components.
11.1.2 The Files for East Asian Languages Are Not Installed.
Description
The GENEX Probe cannot be started properly. The system displays the message "Selected
collating sequence not supported by the operating system."
Solution
To install the GENEX series tools in the operating system of non-Chinese version, you need
to install East Asian languages in the Windows operating system. To install East Asian
languages in the Windows operating system, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Choose Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options.
Step 2 In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click the Languages tab.
Step 3 Select Install files for East Asian languages. Then, follow the system prompts to complete
the installation.

z The GPS module does not receive sufficient satellite signals
Find out whether the GPS signals are blocked.
z The GPS module of the DTI equipment does not function.
Connect the testing PC with external handset GPS device. The recommended model is
GARMIN 60.
Solution
Because of the large amount of the data in WCDMA, the problem that certain messages are
not reported occurs frequently. In the Probe, the Log Mask of the messages that need not
observe is defined as close. Engineers must check the setting and open the desired Log Mask
before the test.
Solution
The Modem cannot initiate a dialing because of incorrect APN settings. For the details on
how to set the APN, see section 7.2.4 "Setting the APN."
Alternatively, you can directly start a PS DialUP test to set the APN in the APN option. For
the description of the PS DialUP test, see section 9.3.8 "PS Dialup."
Solution
The system automatically slices logfiles due to the format of the logfiles (GEN files). The
GEN files recorded by the Probe consist of file headers and data packets. The space reserved
for the GEN file header is 4 MB. This space is used to store the offset address of each data
packet. Each offset address occupies four bytes. A space of 4 MB can only store the offset
addresses of 1 million data packets.
If the maximum size of the GEN file set by the user is 100 MB and the quantity of data
packets exceeds 1 million, even when the GEN file does not reach the maximum size, the
Probe automatically slices the GEN file to generate a new logfile.
To determine whether the quantity of data packets in the log files exceed the predefined range:
Step 1 Choose View > Information and the Information dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Select the Log File tab page to check the value of Total packets.
If the value of Total packets exceeds 1 million, the size of the logfile exceeds the defined
range of the system, and the system automatically slices the logfile.
