Course Description and Purpose:

This course is intended to empower you with the awareness and skills needed to make
informed decisions about your health and health-related behaviors. If you work to apply
the knowledge you gain in this course to your personal life, the benefits will extend far
beyond the academic credit received. The textbook is used to provide you with a basic
foundation of health-related knowledge. Engaging in the learning activities associated
with the course will assist you in assessing and clarifying your personal attitudes, beliefs,
and behaviors related to selected health issues.
Required Texts:
1. Choosing Health, by Lynch, Elmore, and Morgan. 2012.
2. Experiencing Health in Todays Society, Vail-Smith, K., Tavasso, D., Blumell, C.,
& Cavanaugh, B.; East Carolina University (2014).
Goals/Competencies:
Students will develop an understanding of the physical, psychological and sociocultural factors and human behaviors that influence human health and affect the
major health problems in our society.
Students will develop an understanding of the role of knowledge and personal
responsibility in fostering a commitment to human health.
Students will develop an understanding of the components of health-related physical
activity and their relationship to human health.
Course Layout:
HLTH 1000 is a 2 credit hour course that is online. Class is scheduled for twice a week
but we only meet face-to-face once a week. The other day consists of an online lesson
that will be due at the next face-to-face class.
Course Expectations & Policies:
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory, and will be taken at the beginning of every class. Your
participation is a valued and important part of this course, especially since we only meet
once a week. In order to turn in workbook assignments, you must be in class. Even if
you have your online lesson completed, you will not get credit unless you attend the inclass lecture for that day. The only exception is in the case of a university excused
absence. For more information regarding what qualifies as an excused absence, go to
http://www.ecu.edu/cs-studentaffairs/dos/excused_absences.cfm.

Expectations - The learner enrolled in this course will behave as a mature adult engaged
in undergraduate level study. As a mature learner, he/she will:
a. Interact with other learners in a respectful manner.
b. Accept responsibility for his/her behavior and learning.
c. Assess his/her progress and request assistance as needed.
d. Accept constructive criticism as an essential component of learning.
IMPORTANT: No Laptops, cell phones, or text messaging during class. Do not
pack up materials until class is over or hold side-bar conversations.
Instructor Email Response Policy - All emails received prior to 3pm on Friday will receive
a response within 24 hours. Emails received after 3pm on Friday will receive a response
by noon on Monday. Please do not send multiple emails within 24 hour time period. If you
have not received a response from me within the allotted time period, then it is
appropriate to send a follow-up email. Please include your section number in emails. All
emails will be sent in a professional manner. I will not respond to emails that lack
professionalism.
The following is considered a professional email:
1. Use of a greeting (Dear Ms. Williams for example)
2. Use of a salutation (Sincerely)
3. Emails that do not contain words used for texting. For example, you must write out
the word you in the email.
4. Proper grammar and spelling. This includes capitalization.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a fundamental value of higher education and East Carolina
University. Acts of cheating, plagiarism, falsification or attempts to cheat, plagiarize or
falsify will not be tolerated. Should it be determined that an academic integrity violation
has taken place, you may either be assigned a grade sanction, receive an F for the
course and/or be referred to the Office of Student Conflict Resolution. Academic integrity
is expected of every East Carolina University student. Academically violating the Honor
Code consists of the following:
Cheating: The giving or receiving of any unauthorized aid or assistance or the
giving or receiving of unfair advantage on any form of academic work.
Plagiarism: Copying the language, structure, ideas, and/or thoughts of another and
adopting those as one's original work.
Falsification: A statement of untruth, either verbal or written, regarding any
circumstances relating to academic work.
Attempting any act which if completed would constitute an academic integrity
violation as defined above.
Continuity of Instruction
In the event that ECU classes are suspended due to a pandemic or other catastrophe I
will strive to continue to provide instruction to those who are able to participate. In the
case of suspension of face-to-face classes, you will receive an email from me as well as a
Blackboard Announcement that details how we will communicate, where you can locate
course information, and what you can expect during this time period. I realize that some
of you who are directly affected by the event will not be able to participate, but I will
continue to provide instruction to those who are able to receive information via the
Internet.

Course Requirements:
Your grade in this course is based on exams, online workbook assignments, online
quizzes, online discussion board assignments, and participation in ECUs Wellness
Passport program events.
Exams:
There are 3 exams in this course. The exams in this course will address material
presented in class, on-line and in the text. The lectures and discussions in this course
are intended to supplement rather than duplicate the text. Since many topics covered in
the text will not be addressed in class, it is your responsibility to ask questions in class
about anything that you would like to clarify about the readings. A study guide is
provided for each exam. Since the study guides are long, I recommend completing them
over time rather than in one sitting. Bring them to class to use as an outline for taking
notes.
In Class Lectures:
Lectures will be done using PowerPoint presentations. The slides will not be available to
you so you will need to take notes in class.
Workbook/Online Lessons:
There are 11 online lessons that will be completed in this course worth 5 points each.
Look at the course schedule to see when your lessons are due. Each lesson is two-part
and requires you to complete a Note Sheet and Online Assignment. I will check your
workbook at the beginning of each class to make sure you have the assignments done. I
expect every question to be answered. I will also collect the workbooks on exam days to
grade them. NOTE: If a link goes down for one of the online assignments, we can change
the assignment but cant make the changes in the workbooks. Therefore, go off what is
on Blackboard and write your answer in your workbook where the original assignment
was.
Online Quizzes:
There are 3 4 online quizzes for each of the three units in this course (11 total). The
quizzes will only be available during the unit being covered so it is important to get them
completed before each exam. Once closed, they will not be reopened for any reason.
Each quiz is five questions and worth five points. IMPORTANT: You will only have five
minutes to complete each quiz and you have to take them in one sitting (cannot save
and go back later). Once the five minutes are up, you will be locked out and will not be
able to submit it. If you run into a problem with a quiz, send me an email and I will
address the situation and get back to you.
Discussion Board Assignments:
There are 2 discussion board assignments in this course that will be completed on
Blackboard. In order to receive full credit (10 points) for the assignment, you will need to
post a thread with your response to the question and then respond to a classmates post.
Posts need to be rich in content and full of thought. Look at the course schedule to see
when your discussion board assignments are due.
Wellness Passport Events:
Throughout the semester you are required to attend 2 Wellness Passport program
events. At least one of the programs needs to be a Premier Event. See the Passport link
on our Blackboard page or click here for the schedule: http://www.ecu.edu/passport. You

need to take your workbook with you to the Passport events to get a stamp of
attendance. On the day of the final exam, I will ask you to turn in the Passport page so I
can turn them in to the Wellness staff for program evaluation. I recommend completing
these as quickly as possible since the events get crowded towards the end of the
semester.
Extra Credit:
Up to 20 additional points can be earned by participating in the ECU Student Volunteer
Program and other opportunities that will be presented in class.
