Summary
In 2006 the so-called "independent" Carisbrook
Stadium Trust was set up to investigate the
feasibility of building a new stadium in Dunedin.
Not One Penny More!
In 2007 the Dunedin City Council provided further
funding for the Carisbrook Stadium Trust to
further "investigate" the feasibility of building a
new stadium projected to cost $188 million - "not
one penny more!" was the mantra. $17.3 million
was spent in the investigation stage alone.
The stadium which ended up costing the city
$266.4 million2, is now referred to by media as
the "troubled stadium." In the Dunedin City
Councils Stadium Review of Nov 2014, their
projected cost for capital maintenance is twenty
times higher4 than what was stated as evidence
in the Stop The Stadium court case in April 2009.
78.3% of Ratepayers Opposed
In 2008 investigations continued amongst an
unprecedented outcry from Dunedin citizens
concerned at the cost for such a small city. As a
Dunedin resident and ratepayer, I headed the
Stop The Stadium Inc campaign and it soon
became apparent, in a University conducted
survey, that 78.3% of Dunedin ratepayers shared
my concerns. However, in April 2009, the final
construction contract was signed, against the
wishes of the ratepayers.
Reverse Robin Hood
I continued to investigate the stadium issue to
expose the truth of how public money was used
for private gain. Dunedin has suffered a reverse
Robin Hood scenario where money from the poor
went into the pockets of the rich. This is the first
stage in the campaign to right this wrong and
return the money back to Dunedin ratepayers.
Please sign the Pay Up Please, Sir Eion petition
so those responsible for Dunedin's biggest
scandal can be held to account.
Thank you.

The promised $1,000,000 was made to politically sway an issue. The taxpayers
should not be burdened with the broken promises of this man. If a man's word is
his bond, where does that leave Sir Eion?

What has transpired over the past six years with the Forsyth Barr Stadium, where
"public money has been used for private gain" is unconscionable. I smiled to
myself when reading about the 'Reverse Robin Hood' in the summary section
(page 2) of the Official Petition Report. Everyone should check out this report.
Hopefully this petition will be more than a catalyst to right this terrible wrong and
return millions of dollars back to the Dunedin's rate payers. Let's hope it inspires
other communities who have been victims of corporate greed to stand up fight for
what is right.
When you're right, fight!

I believe that a few key individuals, Eion Edgar among them, are responsible for
the stadium being foisted upon Dunedin residents at ratepayers expense and
against their wishes. It would be decent for these individuals to now compensate
the Dunedin public. For instance, they could fund the upgrade for the
Physiotherapy Pool. Eion Edgar should at least honour his pledge of $1 million.

I am signing this petition because I did not want Dunedin to spend so much money
on a project that we couldn't afford. Rich men got richer and then disappeared,
leaving ratepayers to pay for the mess. It would still be cheaper to demolish the
stadium now. Shame on the filthy rich liars.

A promise is a promise and in this case a very important one as Eion Edgar's

It is important that those responsible for this financial burden be held to account for

The way in which this project, based upon faulty economic modelling, and

Common sense, exhibited by the majority of rate payers was ignored. In 2008,
with the world financial crisis, there was the perfect opportunity for council
stadium supporters to back down without losing 'face'. In its arrogance council
failed to do so. Were palms greased? One has to ask based on the decision to
proceed , when all the indicators were that the stadium would not be financially

I am signing this petition because, on the evidence provided, Sir Eion seems to
have reneged on making his promised contribution to the Stadium. That pledge,
along with others, was used to encourage the Council to agree to build the
Stadium in the face of ample evidence that it was going to be a financial disaster.
Sir Eions contribution would now soften the impact on Council finances, and fulfil
a promise that was presumably made in good faith.
