Mr. Jeremy Rifkin

Let me show you the future.

The Third Industrial Revolution already exists.
Tell to your Board of Directors to prepare their
passports and their suitcases and reserve few days in
their agendas to fly to Spain...
The trip had been a little while of transformation.
During it they were able to see and touch the future...

Where do we need to be?

Becoming

a more

sustainable
society

(1) Low Carbon Mix

www.roadmap2050.eu

(2) Electric Power Storage

Renewables, clean energy, green houses...
Only get us so far without storage
Inconstant energy supplies
Peaks and valleys in supply / demand

Technologies are available or in development

Batteries
Fly-wheels
Hydrogen

(3) Changing buildings to power plants

plus smart, low-energy houses

...the user becomes a generator

(4) Smart Grids: putting the pieces

together

Energy 2.0 where IT combines with distributed energy

Smart grid concept

Connecting across borders

Distribution grids should

be smarter to enable
integration of distributed
(sustainable) generation
New services can
be offered: real time
pricing, local
energy storage,
smart charging,

Some challenges:
less predictable
generation, less
predictable load,
network overload
risk,

Unexpected wind reduction, January 23rd and 24th 2009

January 23rd and 24th 2009: Storm Klaus. Winds up to 220 km/h hit the Iberian
peninsula.

Most turbines in the north of Spain shut down due to their over-speed
protection.

Difference between real and forecasted wind production was greater than 6 000
MW on some hours.
13 combined cycle units were
connected to the network by
real-time redispatching to
supply
additional
upward
reserve and increase security
of supply due to the risk of
line trips.
