TUTORIAL SHEET 13
Problem 1
Determine the lightest and heaviest possible values of mass M that will allow block P to stay in its place without
sliding. All pulleys are frictionless.
more data: P = 50 kg, = 40 deg, s = 0.15

Problem 2
Pulley A is stuck and will not turn. Pulley B is frictionless. Determine the value of mass M at which block P will
impend to slide up along the incline.
more data: P = 60 kg, = 35 deg, s1 = 0.2 [between P and the surface], s2 = 0.1 [between the pulley and the
rope]

Problem 3
The coefficient of static friction of block A [mA = 5 kg] is equal to that of block B [mB = 8 kg]. The coefficient of
kinetic friction of block A is equal to that of block B, but only 80% of the coefficient of static friction. The pulley is
frictionless.
a. If block B is impending to move down, calculate the maximum values of the coefficients of kinetic and static
friction.
b. Calculate the tension of the cable pulling on block A.

Problem 4
The Wicked White Witch has decided to feed Little Boyet to the Three Hungry Crocodiles that guard her kingdom.
She tied him to a rope and suspended him over the mote around the castle. The rope went half a revolution around
a bollard and balanced by a counterweight on the other end. The counterweight is a tank weighing 15 kg and
initially filled with 135 kg of water. In the position shown, the water tank [combined weight: 150 kg] is just
impending to move down. Little Boyet is only 45 kg. But then, the water tank is leaking..
..and the Wicked White Witch is laughing..HA, HA, HA, HA, HA
Calculate the weight of the water tank in kilograms when Little Boyet begins to descend to the Three Hungry
Crocodiles.
But the Wicked White Witch has promised Little Boyet that if he can save himself she will let him marry Princess
Bukangliwayway, her daughter. Will Little Boyet live long enough to marry the Princess whose beauty is
said to be as refreshing as the morning dew? Will the Three Hungry Crocodiles contain their hunger if their
prey gets away? But will their prey get a way [out]?

Problem 5
Determine whether the block below is in equilibrium and find the magnitude and direction of the friction force when
= 30 and P = 200 N.

Problem 6
Block A is 10 kg; Block B is 12 kg. Between drum C and the rope the coefficient of static friction is 0.09 and for
kinetic friction, 0.05. If the motion is impending in the position shown, calculate the coefficient of friction at drum D.

Problem 7
Princess Bukangliwayway is ever faithful to the Prince Charming of her dreams, whom everyone else knows as Little
Boyet. But the Wicked White Witch has put him in an Unitas Boat to be transported to the Land of Never Never
Never, which as legend says permits no one to escape who has set foot on it. As PB was weeping on the docks she
saw a cable that was held fast on the deck of the boat. That cable had a free end which could be wound around a
bollard. As a great fan of Team Oracle USA which won the last America's Cup, she knew that the boat travelling
with the wind could pull 2439 N. But she knew just as well that even though she possessed beauty beyond
description, her strength was nothing compared to the boat: she could only pull 30 N at the very most. If the
coefficient of friction between the bollard and the rope was 0.35, she could still stop the boat by turning the rope
around the bollard so many times. How many times would that be?

Problem 8
Inside the Unitas Boat Little Boyet has been chained to a wall. The Gargantuan Key to unlock his chain is kept
under a block of wood but guarded closely by the Terrible Sleeping Giant. LB managed to grab a hold of the cable
that is attached to the Gargantuan Key but he still needs to pull it out from under the TSG. If the coefficient of
friction between the wood and the GK is 0.13, and between the GK and the floor 0.08, calculate how much force LB
needs to exert on the cable if the weight of the TSG is 2800 kg. The TSG has little boys for breakfast.
