GATE PREPARATION TIPS

May be very few people are interested in chemical engineering and its future
prospects, but believe me it is one of the fastest growing engineering sector and
career stimulating area for engineers. As you will be exclaimed to know that top 4
Maharatna companies (IOCL, GAIL, SAIL, ONGC) out of 7 require Chemical
engineers in large numbers.
And one of the most interesting fact to go after GATE preparation is that there are
roughly 25000 chemical engineers appear in GATE exam , So one can have
tremendous opportunity to get into PSUs , Premier IITs and IISC.
After appearing continuously 3 years in GATE, I got enough idea about cracking
the GATE to reach within Top 100 rank and that too with the limited study and
time.
Though this year 2013, I am working in Grasim industries Ltd and my working
hours are never regular hours as I have to work in shifts. It was very hard to
prepare for it, but using this method which I am going to reveal now, I got AIR 54
and M.Tech Admission in IIT Bombayand IISC Bangalore both.
Unfortunately there is no good coaching center for Chemical engineering GATE
preparation so you have to dedicate 3 months with 2-3 hours/day starting casually
and triggering at top notch speed in last month.
And you can get help from this great website tarGATE from its helpful content
like Preparation tips, Guide for gate, some Must Read articles for GATE etc.
Follow these tips:1. First month
(A) Read the book Dr. RAM PRASAD, Khanna Publishers for chemical engineering
(A good overview book written by professor of HBTI, Kanpur), you will get fair
idea about chemical engineering if you dont have any ;-).
(B) Go through the whole book and complete its previous question papers.
If you have any doubt in any part then refer to your text books like:
McCabe & smith for unit operations
Treybal for Mass-Transfer Operations
BK dutta for Heat transfer
Geankoplis for Transport Processes and Separation Process
Principles etc.
For more reference books you can check this Link >> Reference Books for CH

2. Second Month
After completing first month now it is different approach for study. Go to
websitewww.unitoperation.com here you will get Chemical engineering PAPERS
FROM 1990 to up to current year and their solutions. Go through every years
paper and you will eventually realize that some particular sort of questions are
repeating in every 3-4 years specially in thermodynamics and mass transfer. One
paper for a day is enough to solve and note down important formulas used in
solutions because this will going to help you in revision in last month.
There are some formulas and equations which are hard to remember like:
Sieder tate equation
HagenPoiseuille equation
Ergun equations for fluidized bed
and some thermodynamics formulas related to fugacity etc.,
You can write them on a paper and stick these papers in your bedroom or
bathroom, where you can easily look at them daily. After watching it on regular
basis for a month you will remember them in your dream too. Let me remind you
that these formulas create difference in rankings a lot.
3. Third month
Now time has come to trigger up your study speed. Now you need to follow the
website www.nptel.iitm.ac.in . This website provides e-learning through online
web and video course in engineering at free of cost and all lectures are given by
professors of IITs and IISC.
Download some important videos and watch them.
4. NOTE: do not forget to download notes of chemical technology especially of
petroleum engineering as 90% questions of chemical technology come from here
only.
In last 15 days go only for revision and practice mathematics and quantitative
aptitude questions to avoid silly mistakes which we usually do in pressure
situation in exam.
After doing this 3 months, 2-3 hrs/day study practice you will surely get rank under
100.
All the Best
