PART 1 SPECIFICATION FOR MECHANICAL & PIPING WORKS

Section 1 General Requirements

SPECIFICATION FOR MECHANICAL/ PIPING

1.1.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

1.1.1.

Design Requirements
CONTRACTOR shall carry out detailed engineering for all mechanical
equipment, including pumping mains, inlet chamber, pipe-work, valves,
joints, pumping stations. All design works shall comply with all stipulated
standards, specifications and QP approved international codes related to
the potable water, fire water and sewage systems, and with minimum
requirements specified in the Scope of Works, drawings and specifications.
CONTRACTOR scope of services shall include, but not limited to, the
following:
1.

Detailed engineering for pumping stations, including pumps and

related equipment for potable water, fire water and sewage pumping
stations.

2.

All package equipment, pipe-work, piping, valves and all accessories

shall be arranged for safe and easy access during routine operations
and maintenance functions. All valves, controls, and accessories that
require adjustment, maintenance services shall be accessible from the
grade level or by means of platforms, walkways or ladders. The layout
should be such that it is easy to maintain the equipment and adequate
space is available to remove/install individual pieces of equipment
and/or instrument.

3.

All package equipment shall have provision for equipment earthing as

part of vendor's scope. Suitable earthing bars and/or nodes shall be
provided within the equipment skids.

4.

Provisions for the surge protection system.

5.

All the valve and piping materials

including the gasket material shall
application and shall not pose
microbiological growth, or cause
discoloration of water.

6.

Pipework and fittings shall be suitable for a safe working pressure

equivalent to the maximum working pressure of the system. The safe
working pressure of pumping mains shall be the closed valve head of
the pump plus the maximum suction static head plus the maximum
surge pressure.

7.

Pipework and fittings shall be suitably rated to withstand intermittent

surge pressure transients specified in the technical schedules.

Section 1 General Requirements

8.

Tests shall be carried out to ensure the pipework systems are correctly
levelled. Upon completion of the installation, the whole of the
pipework, valves etc shall be tested to 25% above the max. surge
pressure.

9.

There shall be a sufficient number of mechanical joints to enable

mechanical plant and valves to be disconnected from built-in pipework.
Such joints shall be tied, and shall not be allowed to sustain the weight
of any pipework.

10.

All machinery stations shall be provided with flexible joints, flange

adaptors or unions such that upon renewal of plant minimal
disturbance of pipework is required.

11.

Flanges shall be drilled off centres.

12.

Pump suction bell mouths shall be standard castings in either cast iron
or ductile iron.

13.

The use of gusseted bends shall only be permitted upon approval by

the Engineer. All bends shall be even curvature manipulated bends
where space allows and the use of carbon and alloy steel welding
fittings to BS 1640 Part 3 or equivalent shall be permitted where short
radius bends are required.

14.

Tee pieces on pump manifolds shall have a radial branch to enable a

more streamline flow from branch to body. Short radius tee pieces are
permitted where there are space limitations and the consequent head
loss is insignificant. Due allowance shall be made for reinforcement in
the vicinity of branches etc.

15.

Puddle flanges shall be provided on all pipes where they pass through
pumping station walls and the contractor shall provide and ensure a
gas tight seal at the penetration.

16.

Pump suction and delivery manifolds shall be provided with a drain

valve and a station isolating valve.
