Course Description: In this introductory, mentor-based course, students are guided through
developing study skills to improve academic and work performance, based on their learning
styles. They are provided several application opportunities based on self-assessments in
topics such as time management, memory, reading, writing, note taking, critical thinking, test
taking and researching. This developmental course cannot be used for degree credit.

Course Objectives: Students will:

• Develop skills that enable life- long learning and make them actively involved in their
own learning.
• Discover their own learning style strengths and weaknesses--the way they process
information and apply it.
• Set up a work/study environment that is conducive to learning.
• Develop techniques for scheduling in order to set and reach long- and short-term goals.
• Develop interpersonal skills for effective written communication.
• Develop study skills that enable them to take effective notes and study for objective,
subjective, and performance evaluations.
• Develop and demonstrate critical thinking for decision making and problem solving.
• Develop and demonstrate skills in evaluating the accuracy and reliability of Internet Web
sites.

Tuesdays: 9:30 am OR 5:00 pm

Attendance Policy:
Attendance is mandatory and if more than two classes are missed, you will likely receive an
F in the course. If you are on academic probation, your satisfactory completion of this course
with at least a C is required to continue in your program. Every minute of class time is
important, so do NOT be late. In respect of others, please do not bring food, drink, and/or
ringing cell phones into the classroom.

Class Format:
Introduction of skill or task, application activity, and assignments. After being assigned, all
assignments are due the following class meeting unless otherwise noted. No late work will
be accepted.

Grading:
Grades will be assigned as a result of class participation and completion of assignments. All
assignments and handouts are to be kept in your class notebook. The completion of your
notebook will be a part of your course grade.
