TEXT: THE GUITAR FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO THE PRESENT DAY, BY

HARVEY TURNBULL, PUB. THE BOLD STRUMMER.& THE CLASSICAL GUITAR
BOOK, CLEVELAND, BACKBEAT BOOKS.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
“Guitar Lit” is a course for any player, guitar aficionado as well as the general student who are
all interested in getting to know better the why’s of the guitar, the lute and their history and
musical repertory. How did the guitar come to be associated with Spain and Spanish culture –
or - who were the leading composers for lute in Britain during the XVIth Century – or - what is a
“ricercare?” These are several of many topics to be reviewed in this course which will present
the history of these plucked stringed instruments via a historical review. Included in the topics
will be important composers, performers, publications, and luthiers/builders of the guitar and its
close relatives.
Class will consist of the following elements: lecture/discussion, readings in the text and related
articles, listening to examples that are discussed, and selected videos.

Testing and Assignments: the class will have a mid-term and a final exam. I will give you a
review sheet prior to testing. Two papers are required of each class member. One of the papers
should be a report on a concert attended which features music related to our class. This is a short
essay informed opinion paper of two pages.

In the second paper, which is five pages, class members will present a topic based on the history
and music which we will study and hear during the course of the semester. The papers are due at
mid-term and during finals week. Class members will present a brief summary of their papers to
the class. I will give you further information via a handout – to help you with this.

.
Guitar and concerts which include guitar are presented at, UTD, and the Guitar Societies of
Dallas and Ft. Worth, and our excellent community colleges of Collin and Dallas Counties.
Some web sites to check are: http://ah.utdallas.edu . and www:guitarsociety.org. Be sure to check
the UTD site and mark your calendar to attend as its an important part of this class – it’s the
listening part – with live music and great players to hear for you. In addition I will give you
reminders in class. UTD offers volunteer opportunities. UTD will host the Texas Competition
annually held in March.. This can be an excellent way to participate in the excitement of a
competition – hear some international artists on guitar – make some new friends - and do a report
– and get a cool T shirt!
Finally, thank you for your participation in Guitar Lit at UTD this semester! EM
