UTD – MUSI 4346 GUITAR ENSEMBLE CLASS:

The advanced guitar class will further develop the skills of

ensemble performance and the principle techniques of solo guitar
playing learned in the introductory guitar class. The class will
thus have two parts: the first part will present exercises for
technical development and ensemble playing, and the second part of
the class will be dedicated to solo guitar performance and
stylistic interpretation.
From time to time the class will host and hear performances
by guests who are invited to the class, and/or participate in a
master class by our guest artists. This spring we will enjoy
performances by American,European and South American artists this
semester. Please be sure and check our website for concert dates:
http://www.utdallas.edu We will have ample opportunity for you to
be a volunteer – for extra credit – and a cool T shirt for our
special events such as the Texas Guitar Competition – right here at
UTD.
Grades will be based on in class performance – that is: weekly
class preparation, performance of assignments, attendance, and your
written work. 0-1 absences will qualify you – in part – for the
grade of “A/A-.” Written work consists of two reports on classic
guitar events. I suggest a concert and a master class, though two
concerts may also qualify. You may use in-class events for extra
credit reports only.
A final class performance will take place at the Spring
Festival – April 21/22. Participation in this performance is
required and part of your performance grade –so please secure this
date/s on your schedule. I will provide dates and details for
Spring Festival.
Please note: the grade of incomplete is discouraged as an option in
this course. If you cannot complete the course for any reason,
please withdraw from the course and take it again at a later date.

Dear Dean Kratz,

In response to your request for proposals for concerts and events
for the 97-98 academic year, I would like to submit the following
proposal for your consideration: a concert in three parts presented
by Sabine and myself. The proposed concert will feature a solo
section by Sabine with Baroque and New Music of Northern Europe.
Sabine specializes in this repertory. Composers include: J.S. Bach,
Sylvius Weiss, Baroque composers of Germany, and Jana Obravska of
the Czech Republic and Annette Kuisbrink of the Netherlands who are
composers of New Music.

The solo section that I will perform features contemporary music

of the Americas. Selected works from my recent Compact Disc "Old
World-New World." Comments from the musical press on this release
have been favorable: according to "The American Record Guide" for
March-April 96, the music on the disc is ".....well paced and
presented, and contains clever programming." The magazine
"Classical Guitar" of London likes the "passionate playing of
Spanish and Latin American Music" which the disc presents. (Feb
96). A copy of the disc is included with the this proposal.

The third part of the proposed recital, the duo segment will
present music from Europe, the Americas, and Japan. Composers
include: Giovanni Batista Granata, of 17th century Bologna, Leo
Brouwer of Cuba and Toru Takemitsu of Japan, composers of New
Music. I also propose to re-set a transcription that I did of
"Three Lullabies" by UTD composer Robert X. Rodriguez for two
guitars. My first transcription of these pieces was for guitar
solo. I have performed these works by Maestro Rodriguez in concerts
at home and abroad.

The duration of the complete program will be approximately ninety

minutes including intermission. The intermission will occur after
the second solo segment, thus presenting a pause between the
soloists and duo ensemble. This program is specifically designed
for the School of Arts and Humanities at UTD. We request a fee of
$750. for this concert.
I enclose copies of programs that Sabine and I are performing both
locally and abroad in the next six months. We are performing a two-
part program in Mexico City on April 23 and then again in Madrid on
May 10. Locally we will present this program at the Arts Magnet
High School on May 1 and at Skyline High School on May 2. Under the
auspices of the office of Cultural Affairs , "Neighborhood Touring
Program" we will present similar programs at the D Art Center in
July, and at the Oak Cliff Branch of the Dallas Public Library in
September of 1997.

Please call me if you would like any further information on this

proposal. Thank you for your invitation to submit proposals such as
this one for consideration to the School of Arts and Humanities.

Sincerely,

AP 3381 Intro Guitar, AP 4345 Continuing Guitar

April 24, 2003

Dear Student players,

Well here we are at semesters end Spring 03. Tomorrow night is the
Spring festival. We are scheduled to begin at 6:30pm. The Intro
class will begin followed by the Continuing Section. There will be
a printed program with your name on it – so please help yourself to
one as a remembrance of your class performance. Please arrive in
plenty of time to tune, set up chairs, stands, and be ready to
play. Thanks for your participation and hard work on this project –
and remember the saying “practice makes perfect” holds true – so
please carefully review your part on all pieces in the program.

An AP 3381 Intro class will be offered in Summer II at UTD. Let me

mention to that there are ensembles offered at nearby community
colleges if you would like a class that will take you farther – as
you have finished Intro guitar at UTD. CCCC offers an ensemble in
Summer I M-Thurs 1-3pm taught by Sabine Madriguera,tel 972-8815613
and Randall Nye 972-860-7133 at Eastfield College will offer and
ensemble M-Thurs evenings in Summer I.

The fall of 2003 at UTD will offer you the opportunity to take the
Intermediate Guitar Class. This class meets weekly at 7pm. By
taking the current section AP 3381 you are eligible to take MUSI
3381 – Intermediate Guitar. The intro class will be listed as MUSI
2324. UTD Guitars need to be returned to the Visual Arts Office by
the end of next week. Your deposit will be returned. If your are
enrolled in MUSI 2324 – you will have first preference for
retaining a UTD instrument in the fall.

Several of you have asked me about finding good guitars. Of course

Guitar Center and Brook Mays have instruments aplenty – just make
sure you purchase the instrument that you want – rather than the
instrument that the sales staff wants you to buy.
If you are interested in purchasing a used instrument, feel free
to contact me. I can put you in touch with other students who have
good used instruments for sale – as they purchase a higher level of
instrument for themselves. If you would like me to scout an
instrument for you by a Spanish maker you can equally contact me
with this request. Esm4433@dcccd.edu, 972-860-7138

I hope that you have enjoyed this semester and learned plenty of
guitar and heard concerts and events which have been interesting to
you. Best wished for academic success at UTD. I hope to see those
of you who wish to pursue playing opportunities in the Fall in
Intermediate guitar at UTD. EM
DEAR AP3381 CLASS PARTICIPANT,
