Time: 3 hours

(MD)
Instructions: 1. Answer ONE question from each unit
2. All Questions carry equal marks
3. Assume missing data, if any

Max. Marks: 60

UNIT- I
1 a) What are principal axes and principal moments of inertia?
[3M]
b) An extruded bar of aluminum alloy has the cross section shown in figure. A 2.1 m length
of this bar is used as a simple beam on a span of 2 m. a concentrated load of 5 KN is
applied at mid length of the span and makes an angle of = 1.4 rad with the x axis.
Determine maximum tensile and compressive stresses in beam.

2 a)

(OR)
What is the concept of shear center? Explain.

b)

[9M]
[4M]

Locate the shear center for the beam cross section as shown in figure. Both flnges and web
thickness is 3 mm.
[8M]
UNIT- II
3 a) What is Membrane Analogy for torsion? Explain with example.
[4M]
b) A hollow rectangular thin wall steel torsion member has the cross section shown in figure.
The steel has a yield stress is 360 MPa and shear modulus of elasticity of 77.5 MPa.
Determine the maximum torque that may be applied to the torsion member, based on a
factor of safety 2 for the octahedral shear stress criterion of failure. What is the unit angle
of twist when the maximum torque is applied?

4 a) Derive an expression for thickness of a disc of uniform strength.

[5M]
b) A thin disc of uniform thickness is of 800 mm outer diameter and 50 mm inner diameter.
It rotates at 3000 rpm. Determine the radial and hoop stresses at radii of 0, 25 mm, 50
mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm and 400 mm. density of the material is 7800
kg/m3 and =0.25.
[7M]
UNIT- III
5 a) Explain the infinite beam on elastic foundation.
[5M]
b) A long 50 mm diameter steel bar is supported by a number of pairs of 2 mm diameter
high strength steel wires. An end view of the beam and wires is shown in figure. The
pairs of wires equally spaced at l=900 mm. A load P is applied to the center of the long
beam at the same location as one pair of wires. Take E s=Ew= 200 GPa, s= 300 MPa and
w= 1200 MPa.

[7M]
(OR)
6 a) Explain the short beams on elastic foundation.
[5M]
b) A long rectangular section brass beam has depth of 20 mm and a width of 15 mm and
rests on a hard rubber foundation as shown in figure. The value of the spring constant for
the hard rubber foundation is 0.2 N/mm 3. If the beam is subjected to a concentrated load
P is 700 N at the location shown, determine the maximum deflection of the beam and
maximum flexural stress in the beam. Take Eb= 82.7 GPa.

b) Compare the crippling load given by Rankines and Eulers formulae for tubular strut 2.25
m long having outer and inner diameters of 37.5 mm and 35.5 mm respectively, loaded
through pin joint at both ends. Take yield stress as 315 MN/mm 2, a=1/7500and E=200
GPa. If elastic elastic material for the material is taken as 200 MPa, then for what length
of the strut does the Eulers formula ceases to apply.
[6M]
(OR)
8 a)

fixed and other end is hinged.
[5M]
b) A hollow mild steel column hinged at both ends is of circular cross section with an
outside diameter of 100 mm and an inside diameter of 80 mm. the length of the column is
2.5 m. Determine the maximum permissible load with an eccentricity of 15 mm, if the
maximum compressive stress is limited to 75 MPa. Take E = 205 GPa.
