YLI Newsletter August 2014

Table of Content

Greetings Everyone!
Welcome to this years first Young Leaders for Indonesia Newsletter. Yes, this newsletter was
not the real first for some of you alumni. Way back in 2011, the community had made an effort to create weekly newsletters in hopes to report the Communitys activity to its alumni. We
simply reinvigorated the legacy our predecessors had tried to build.
Here in the management, we everyone! often think about what it means to be a part of a
community and how it is best to leverage the unique quirks our member own to the fullest.
In YLI, we found there was no shortage of inspiring leadership stories and practice as our
members are driven individuals who care about their society. Here we have this one story of
our member who developed a snail-based food manufacturing business to teach farmers
how to reverse the pest ecosystem from their risk-center to income-generating goods, and
there we have another member who formed her own pro-bono consulting group to help
SMEs better manage their business.
We felt the need to let other members know these stories, and feel the inspiration to catalyze
their own personal/professional growth. Hence, came our theme Connecting Inspiration,
Embracing Growth. This newsletter was created to channel this need in a compressed format.
As our closing statement, we hope that in the future this newsletter will evolve in as the form
of connecting between our members evolve. Connecting not only to build rapport or relationship but to join or unite in an effort to create something bigger together. In practice, we
realize that this factor is what differentiates a thriving and a merely surviving community.

PROGRESS UPDATE
Community of Change

Alongside many new programs developed by the YLI Community, this years highlight
was also marked by the declaration of Community of Change from the YLI Foundation.

A brief background regarding this initiative: as the YLI program reached its 5 years
milestone, many of its graduates were dispersed throughout the country, individually
driving small changes in different topics and region as part or outside of the work they were doing.
YLI Foundation was aware of this fact, and felt that much more change could be made if there was a
platform that could connect the graduates to collectively work together.
Community of Change was built with the spirit of driving bigger changes in the nations most critical
issue together as a community. During the YLI Annual Conference, the young leaders were grouped
with one of the severalnations leading figure that were willing to commit and mentor them on a key
topic chosen, and generate an idea to drive change together. Now, two month following the declaration, we would like to share the ideas launched by these young leaders and the progress that had
ensued

t first, the issue that rises was that many

of the Governments program were not
effectively rolled out in the root level. Then
it was identified that the cause of were
because these programs were not effectively communicated to the Heads of PoC
(amounted to ~2000 head) thus resulted in
either delay or hold out of these programs.

he Mass Rapid Transport that was aimed

to be the transport backbone of Jakartans were facing a potential threat that
many of its public transport cousin face. The
reason why some of the public transport
infrastructure failed to reduce traffic congestion were, as observed from Transjakarta,
because of the fact that there were gaps
between targeted transport user (in this
case, car owners) and actual users (non-car
owners) that reduces the transports main
objective.

Initiative

To tackle this issue, The Local Development

Planning Agency (Bappeda) conceptualized a virtual information platform
called Kampung Teknologi that will
act as 1) an information canal
that inform new/changes in governments program that is directed to the Heads of PoC and
is open-source for everyone 2)
collect reports and aspiration on
government programs from the recipients.

Initiative

go

YLI Champions will drive the development of Kampung Teknologi by 1) designing the use of this platform and 2) build
the information systems infrastructure as part of the
5-years plan.

YLI Champions were asked

to drive a 5 year Campaign Strategy to engage targeted MRT
users with the facility
before its launched,
with hopes for MRT to
enter the right market
and not face the same
problem its cousin does

Progress

Progress

Team has engaged with many stakeholders from the

Government and Bappeda to assess feasibility and
make adjustment throughout the first 4 weeks to
develop a detailed workplan and team structure in
the next following 4 weeks. The workplan is expected to be rolled out early next month.

Team has engaged with the MRT leaders

to gain perspective and aspirations and
transform them into a concept. The workplan is still under discussion and expected to be approved early next month.

Background

Background

ndonesia has a plentiful supply of accesIand

sible energy sources, both from fossil fuels
renewables; however we are struggling

to keep up with the energy demands. Energy demand has been increasing faster than
economic development and population
growth where transportation and electricity is
the major usage of energy. A large proportion of this demand has been met by polluting fossil fuels, mainly oil. Indonesia possesses
a variety of renewable energy resources, including geothermal, solar, micro-hydro, wind
and bio-energy. Switching to renewable
energy wont be easy. Removing fuel subsidies is a sensitive political issue. Promoting
renewable energy requires structural adjustment and high levels of initial investment. Yet
these are the conundrums which need to
be urgently resolved if Indonesia wants to
secure its energy, develop its economy and
tackle climate change.

Initiative

NOTEK aims to accelerate the growth of

non-IT-technology-based small and medium
enterprises that deliver both technology and
business solutions to transform social and environmental problems and create sustainable
economic growth in Indonesia.

NDONESIA SETARA have objective to discover how we can use abundant natural
resources in our country without forgetting
conservation aspects. It is an initiative that
facilitates sustainable and fair community
trading.

Initiative

Along with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources policy to have energy diversification by 2025, our team initiate to start-up
a business in Renewable Energy resources.
Our business aim to leverage the renewable
energy usage in the society, mainly for (1)
small to medium scale industrial area which
consume large amount of electricity and
also (2) for rural area which not yet reached
by state-owned electricity utility (PLN Perusahaan Listrik Negara). The initiatives is to
change their main energy source from fossil
fuel to renewable and sustainable energy sources such as hydro-electric or solar
photo voltaic. As added value, this energy
source is much cleaner and produce very
small amount of pollution, and also will help
Indonesia to reserve more its fossil fuel.

Together with INOTEK and INDONESIA SETARA, YLI Champions are contributing in
managing social media engagement, mapping the potential partner, preparing stakeholders management plan, develop business
incubating project and making digital and
printed mapping for small and medium enterprise in Solo.

Progress

Progress

Team has done comparative study with few

institutions that run microhydro and solar
panel business. Team also has explored the
demand in several market segment alternatives. Currently, team is finishing feasibility
study for the combination of each market
segment, product, and business model.

Team has done to make concept and created initial work plan, issue tree and evaluating or finalizing the problem statement. Team
also has identify key partner contact and
