Parts of Speech lesson and Review:

Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing
or speaking.
2C. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning styles,
working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
Lesson Objective(s): Students will be able to identify four parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb,
adverb, adjective, and preposition) and use these correctly when writing or speaking. (Blooms
Taxonomy: Analysis)
Introduce the Learning Activity:
1. I will communicate the lesson objective to the students by explaining what we will be
going over. I will be enthusiastic about the lesson and ensure students that they have a
fun learning class ahead of them because we will be using technology as a learning tool.
Many students are put off by grammar lessons, but they love video games. Hopefully
combining the two will make them eager to learn and even play these games outside of
the classroom.
2. My motivator and the way I will get students interested in the lesson are different. In
order to motivate students, I will make sure they are aware that they will be getting
quizzed on the material. However, I do want them to care about the lesson in more ways
than just a grade on their report card. I will get students interested in this lesson by
playing part of the song, Word Crimes by Weird Al Yankovic found on YouTube. This
song is funny and even touches on why proper grammar is important in day to day life.

Provide Information:
1. I will begin after the hook with the I Do portion of the lesson. During this portion, I
will introduce a new part of speech, Preposition.

Example:
I will use the Smart Board to bring up an image of a doughnut and a fly. I will
ask the students the importance of the two images. This is new material to them, so
they may not know. The doughnut and the fly are good images for helping students
learn about prepositions instead of remembering this definition: a word preceding a
noun or pronoun that expresses the relation to another word or element in the clause.
All this means is:
The fly flew (around, in, about, between, on) the doughnut. I will ask
students to give me other examples of these words.
2. I will then ask the students to review with me older material (noun, pronoun, verb,
adverb, and adjective.)
Example:
I will call on the first students I see with their hand raised to label a part of
speech and explain why based on this sentence written on the board:
My terribly naughty hamster, Moose, ran away somewhere into the residence
hall.
Ask students to also decipher between proper and common noun. (A proper
noun is capitalized.)
If they can identify the word into as a preposition, they can get bonus
participation points.
Provide Practice:
1. Students will practice working with parts of speech by playing the Speech
Detective game which focusses on verb, noun, and pronoun.
2. Students will also practice the above on their own by opening up the Word
Invasion game I have on my website which focuses on more parts of speech.
During this time, I will walk around the classroom and assist students if they
received an incorrect answer and do not know why.
Provide Knowledge of Results:
1. I will observe students and provide verbal feedback as I walk around the classroom while
they play the parts of speech games. This also allows me to see where I need to focus my
attentions on.
2. The written feedback will come later in the week. Students will have a quiz on Friday
based on the weeks review.

Review the Activity:

1. I will have students summarize the lesson with a closure activity. The activity that I have
chosen is to write a letter to an absent classmate. Students will write down what they
enjoyed, how to access the sites, and important things to keep in mind for the parts of
speech.
Method of Assessment:
1. The closure activity also plays into my formative assessment. I will collect them and see
how much the students grasped and also assess their writing skills. The summative
assessment will be a quiz at the end of the week.
