NITIE, Mumbai celebrates its 51 glorious Years of Industrial excellence

One of the premier management institutes in the country, National Institute of Industrial
Engineering popularly known as NITIE reached its golden jubilee milestone in 2013. NITIE
regarded as a pioneering academic institute of higher learning was established in the year
1963 under the aegis of UNDP and ILO in the financial capital of India, Mumbai. Since then
NITIE has travelled a long way in its endeavor to reach excellence in various aspects of
Industry.
Avartan is a journey of thousand miles that begins with a single step. Decades ago NITIE
decided to take a step towards making a mark on the business school fraternity through the
inception of events like Prerana (circa. 1995), Lakshya (circa. 2000), Empresario (circa.
2004), Envision, and Litmus (circa. 2007). 2012 saw Envision and Litmus merge with
Prerana.
The prime objective of these festivals has always been to provide the much needed industry
interface for the students. These events see participants from the best business schools of the
country compete in competitions that span the entire gamut of management education. They
also see phenomenal corporate participation and help in fostering managerial excellence by
bringing students, faculty, and industry leaders onto a common platform.
The inaugural function for Avartan 2014 was held on 11th October, 2014 at NITIE Campus. It
was graced with the presence of Prof. (Ms.) Karuna Jain (Director NITIE), Prof. Ashok K
Pundir (Dean Student Affairs and Placement) and the guest of honor Ms. Shilpa Singh,
runner-up,I Am She Miss Universe India 2012.
Avartan 2014 started with its sporting festival Josh 2014. Josh was a grand success which
witnessed large participation from institutes like NMIMS, SIMS, Welingkar Institute in a
wide variety of sports like cricket, futsal, basketball, table tennis, throwball etc.
Running in parallel, the cultural festival of NITIE Arohan, on Oct 11, 2014, was dazzled
with the presence of Mr. Tigmanshu Dhulia (Chief Guest) who has directed a host of
critically acclaimed movies and the students got to learn a lot from this veteran's experiences
and ideologies on life.
The audience was mesmerized by the soulful voices in the Surkshetra grand finale. From
Medleys to Western jazz, the singers sung it all on stage. It was followed by war of bands
where rock bands from various institutes fiercely competed on stage for the title of the best
band. The judges for the event were the music producer duo Shubbu and Vishal from the
international rock band Andreas Jones and Company.
The evening of 12th October 2014 started off with an opening act by Yellow Pedalz, the
legacy band of NITIE. They had the crowd's arms in the air as they belted out one rock hit
after another. It was followed by Nrityotsava, the dance fest. Rendezvous, the Fashion Show,
was an eye-grabber for everybody as participants walked the ramp to rocking music and
attractive costumes.

During the 15th edition of Lakshya event, Lakshya Business Visionary Awards were
awarded to Shri. Harsh Goenka, Chairman, RPG Group and Dr. B.R.Shetty, Founder and
CEO UAE exchange, CEO and MD NMC Hospitals and Neopharma. The awardees are those
icons of the industry, who by their exemplary vision and extraordinary leadership have
changed the course of the Indian economy.
Dr. B.R.Shetty described about how he constructed his business solely in UAE. Mr. Shetty
emphasized on cleanliness and social service, he quoted that money is not everything and infact money is not needed in running a business, what it takes to run a business is a strong
determination and passion for the work.
Cherishing its glory, this year NITIE has felicitated Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, Former Director
General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Exchairman, Atomic Energy Commission of India with its first ever Lakshya Distinguished
leader award.
Every year NITIE felicitates Empressario Entrepreneur Awards to entrepreneurs who
make a mark for themselves in this world. The award for the Most Inspiring Entrepreneur
was conferred upon Mr. Amit Mittal, Managing Director, A2Z Group. Most Promising
Entrepreneur Award was conferred upon Mr. P.S. Talesara, Chairman and co-founder,
Pyrotech Electronics Pvt Ltd. Both of them have shown the courage to live their dreams and
built the path for others to follow.
The inaugural edition of Supply Chain Management Conclave was conducted in which two
eminent personalities namely Mr. M.M Singh Chief Mentor, Maruti Suzuki Pvt Ltd and Mr.
Mahendra Agrawal, Founder and MD Gati Ltd. were present. They mainly focused on current
supply chain scenarios of their respective organizations and also discussed issues on how in
future battle between organizations is going to change into battle between their respective
supply chains.
Power Talks provided an exclusive opportunity for the students to hear the words of wisdom
by Dr. R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India. In his talk, he
mainly focused on doing basic research and talked about implementation of research in doing
development in-order to develop technology. He also emphasized on how R&D can be useful
for an organizational growth for any type of industry.
Another flagship event of Avartan 2014, Prerna Business Meet brought together eminent
leaders of India Inc. such as Dr. Abhay Firodia, Chairman Force Motors, Mr. K.B.S
Anand, M.D. and CEO of Asian Paints Limited, Dr. Kamal K. Sharma, Vice Chairman
Lupin Limited, and Dr. Chandan Chowdhury, MD Dassault Systemes. Their discussion
rested on this years topic: "Roadmap to India's progression: Attractive but challenging
market".
For the second time in a row, NITIE Finance Conclave 2014 was orgasized with the theme
of Indian Banking and Finance Sector The way forward. Keynote Speakers for this
years conclave were Mr. Sunil Kakar Group CFO, IDFC Ltd, Mr. K.V Srinivasan CEO,

On The Job Achievers Contest (OJAC) is an unparalleled event encouraging Industry Institute and Industry-Industry interaction in which an eminent Jury panel evaluates and
envisions the challenges tackled by teams from various organizations. Companies across
sectors such as Manufacturing, FMCG, Banking, Consultancy, IT, Pharmaceuticals,
Automobiles etc compete for the best project award. OJAC was conducted for 5 different
modules, namely, Industrial Engineering; Supply Chain Management; General and HR
Management; Systems and IT Management and Operations Management, and witnessed
participation from corporate giants like Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Maruti Suzuki, Dell,
Madura, pepsi-Co, General Mills and many more.
Events like the Business plan contest, Avezha (entrepreneurial workshop), Dapprendre
(entrepreneur talks) organised by Empresario were marked by large crowd of enthusiastic
students. The mission of these events was to provide a professional workspace and idea
laboratory facilitated by eminent speakers, where budding entrepreneurs can develop new
business identities in a secure, non-competitive environment of open communication and
synergistic potential.
Prominent speakers for these events were: Mr. Ajeet Khurana, CEO at IIT Bombays Society
for Innovation and Entrepreneurship SINE, Mr. Nitin Mukaddam, Strategic advisor of
Localbaniya.com and CEO of NM consulting, Mr. Naval Ahuja, CEO of
Exchange4Media, Mr. Jaspreet Saluja, Co-Founder of Housing.com, Mr. Sudipta
Mukherjee, Zonal Manager Bank of India, Mr. Rajesh Pednekar, Distribution Head of
Pfizer India, Mr. Srinivas Rao, CEO of Prizm payments, Mr. Prabhkiran Singh, Co-founder
of Bewakoof.com and Mr. Ansul Gupta, Co-founder of Box8.
Other events at Avartan like Summer Project Contest (SPC) aiming at unearthing the best
summer projects across the areas of SCM, Marketing, Finance, Consulting and IT and
Lakshwiz Case study competition for students in modules of SCM, Finance and Marketing
encouraged students to dig out their managerial skills.
The 6th day ended with a similar interactive talk session titled Cita-De-La-Prerana which
saw Mr. Sanjay Khan and Mr. Ayaz Menon. Mr. Sanjay inspired students by his lifetime
experiences from film industry while Mr. Ayaz put his view on eminence of sports in life and
also encouraged students to be enthusiastic.
Other events that were a part of the grand fest included the likes of Strategy-Myntra
Paradigm an HR case challengel; Sync-Quest, IT case study by Congnizent and Engauge,
event on EHS and Sustainability which aims to promote forward thinking in social and
environmental responsibility; Synergy: Smart city Challenge, Green Lantern with theme
Sustainability as a driver for Business Innovation and Growth
Avartan unites industry stalwarts, academicians, managers, NITIE PG and Fellow students
leading to qualitative networking and a healthy exchange of ideas and knowledge. The

celebrations reaffirm the fact that NITIEs golden streak in the industry will never fade away.
NITIE will continue making our country proud in the future like it has done so far.
NITIE ALUMNI MEET- Sansmaran 2014
NITIE, since its inception in 1963, has made its own mark in the industry. Today when
NITIE celebrates 51 successful and joyous years of existence, it is represented in every sector
of the industry by alumni who hold positions of leadership and responsibility.
In line with the Golden Jubilee Celebration, NITIE organized its Annual Alumni Meet
Sansmaran 2014 on 15th November 2014 at Hotel Ramada, Mumbai. Sansmaran 2014 is an
earnest endeavour by the Institute to express gratitude and affection towards its alumni and to
keep the spirit of fraternity and belonging alive. It is an attempt on our part to present our
alumni a platform for achieving meaningful interactions, thoughtful endeavours and life-long
relationships. It is, simply, our way to welcome them back to their alma-mater, welcome
them back home.
The event, this year, kicked off with an interaction session between the alumni and the
students, followed by the Annual General Meeting. A CEO Conclave on the topic,
Digitisation: The Big Explosion was organized in the post lunch session. The Felicitation
