New Facility in Xiamen

Background
GN Great Nordic has decided to locate a major part
of the production activities
of GN ReSound in Xiamen,
China.
Considering the limitations

of the existing plant in

The building is a 4-storey structure reecting local construction

practice and provides 9,743 sq.
meter of oor space. The choice
of the white aluminum cladding
for the external surface promotes
the facilitys clean appearance,
an image immediately relating to
the companies products. Various
architectural elements are added to
the facades to provide the specic
building character and style.

Xiamen, GN Great Nordic

embarked on the realization
of a major new facility that
would serve not only the
requirements of GN
ReSound but also those of
Netcom.
The facility is to be a
modern building reecting
the cutting edge level of
technology and quality that
is synonymous with the

provide an attractive and conducive working environment for all
employees on a par with international standards. Physically this has
been achieved via the choice of design and materials for the internal
nish works. The decoration of the
ofces is elaborated using a combination of local and imported materials and kept primarily in modern
Chinese style. Natural materials

With the whole production
located in one country and
in one building, GN Great
Nordic has emphasized the
high level of safety and
security to be incorporated
into the building.
GN ReSound and GN
Netcom have at present

given a high visual prominence.

To ensure a good indoor climate,
a major element in the working environment, in the whole building,
ofces as well as production areas,
are fully air-conditioned with
cooling as well as heating.
The small amount of smoke from
the soldering processes is extracted
by a separate exhaust system to
maintain the clean air environment.
The oors in the production
areas are noise dampening and
antistatic and with earth connection (ESD ooring).
Structural aspects

The building is constructed as a

reinforced concrete frame structure
as is both common and applicable
in the Xiamen region but with
an emphasis on achieving higher
than normal safety requirements.
Various international specialist
consultancies have been retained to
review and quality assure the different design aspects of the building
including the structural design.
Both a Taiwanese structural consultancy, TH Tsai and Associates,
and a Californian consultancy,
Valley Facilities Management
Corporation, were commissioned
to ensure the stringent Californian

were incorporated in the design

and specications. The building
has therefore been constructed to
resist an earthquake of strength
greater than 7 on the Richter scale,
a level higher than the Chinese
requirement.

pumps an emergency generator is

installed. The generator starts automatically in the event of city mains
power supply failure.
The generator - together with an
UPS system - also functions to back
up the IT systems of the building.

Fire Protection Installations etc.

The building is afuently tted

with re alarm and re ghting
installations again meeting the
stringent safety aspirations.
The sprinkler system is designed
according to Californian Standard,
requirements of which are also
more extensive than Chinese and
most European standards.
Supplementary to this the building is further supplied with re
hose reels according to Chinese
Code.
The two reghting systems are
backed up with an 18 m3 water
tank on the roof of the building
and a 380 m3 underground reservoir. The underground reservoir is
supplied with pumps, which start
automatically when consumption
of water is registered.
To ensure power supply for the

smoke and temperature sensors is

one of the most reliable systems
on the market and imported from
Japan.
All systems have main switchboards in the guard house at the
main entrance, which is manned by
3 persons 24 hours a day 365 days
a year.

Intrusion Protection

An internal TV-system with 27

color cameras survey all areas and
the recordings are stored on a hard
disk and can be reviewed 2 months
back. The system is monitored
from the main guard house.
An infrared detection system
along the fence is installed.
