The Perspective of selected 4th yr Entrepreneurship students involved in putting up business
while studying
Chapter 1: Introduction

Today, entrepreneur is one of the famous lead characters in terms of business. According to
Timmons (1999), Entrepreneurship is a way of thinking, reasoning, and acting that is
opportunity, obsessed, holistic in approach, and leadership balanced. They are who turns bright
ideas into a successful business establishment. They have become known as people who create
businesses in markets where there were none before. According to Petty (2012), Entrepreneurs
are frequently thought to be individuals who discover market needs and launch new firms to
meet those needs. They are risk takers who provide an impetus for a change, innovation, and
progress in economic life. According to Sim (2006), An Entrepreneur is a person who spots
opportunities and starts his/her own business, using personal creativity, skills, knowledge,
resources and effort.
De La Salle University Dasmarinas conducts business venturing activities as part of their
curriculum to educate young entrepreneurs by experience. According to Schumpeter (1930),
Entrepreneurs play an important role in every free-market society. Entrepreneurs act as a force
for creative destruction, sweeping established technologies, products and ways of doing things
and replacing them with others that the marketplace as a whole sees as representing greater
value. The university allots sufficient time and credentials to encourage students to think out of
the box; giving them the maximum ideas towards building their own businesses in the future.
According to Harvard Business School (2005), Entrepreneurs also and exploit ways of providing
higher quality goods and services at lower prices. These contributions make free-market societies
wealthy and dynamic, and, for most people, they make life much more interesting. They sweep
away stagnant industries and replace them with growing ones that generates new employment
opportunities, often at much higher wages.

Being a student, it is not easy to start a business. Because of lack of time management, other
students tend to become unfocused in their academic performance and be deprived by the urge to
be successful in the business they have started.
The lack of comprehensive study about the summation of the problems of students in their
studies and in their business venturing, the effect of taking up BS Entrepreneurship in building
business, the advantages and disadvantages of building up business to their course, and the main
problems or dilemmas of the said activity to the students made the researchers pursue a study
about the perspective of the respondents of the study.
This study will state how many BS Entrepreneurship students can work for getting high marks
on their academic performance at the same time making their business appealing to the masses. It
will also determine how many students of De La Salle University Dasmarinas taking up BS
Entrepreneurship are business minded. They say that it is an excellent stepping stone when you
start your business at a young age for you can gain experiences and develop skills involving
starting a business or business venturing.
The research will be conducted to determine the profits one young entrepreneur obtains during
the business venturing, to establish if there is a relationship between choosing what business they
will start and their academic schedules, to determine their strategies in starting their business and
continuing it up to present times, to determine the consequences they experience and how they
manage to survive and continue their business.
The research will state the problems of students starting a business while studying in relation
with their studies about working students. Furthermore, it will show the difference of the
experiences between starting a business and working for a company and/or a person while
studying.

METHODOLOGY
This research was conducted in order to determine to pros and cons or advantages and
disadvantages of starting business while studying. According to Crown (1994), to be called an

Entrepreneur, you must have a part of your net worth at risk in a business. It doesnt matter how
much you invest, as long as it constitutes a significant portion of what you have. The authors of
the study will question what they risk for the growth of the business. Also, how young
entrepreneurs manage to balance their time in studying and in managing what business they have
started; if there is any reason or basis when they choose what business they will start and any
other perspective involved in their business venturing. In order to answer these research goals,
the researchers opted to obtain the view of Entrepreneurship Management students in line with
this topic.
Specifically, a total of 20 respondents from 4th year students of Entrepreneurship
Management of De La Salle University-Dasmarias were randomly selected to make up the
survey sample. The participants answered the questionnaires. The instruments used in the
collection of data and supporting data were from books related to Entrepreneurship, thesis from
alumni of the school and articles from the trusted online resource sites such as EBSCO, Science
Direct and various sites. The data gathered from this research instrument were then computed for
interpretation and presentation.

Results
Twenty of the 4th year Entrepreneurship Management students of De La Salle
University-Dasmarias were randomly selected to participate in the survey. Respondents were
given the choice to complete the survey honestly.

Discussion:
One who establishes businesses is called Businessman, but one who starts and
recreates their businesses in a whole new innovative way is called Entrepreneur. They
combine their ideas into applications therefore creating new products/services that may
or may not be effective in the market. But there are factors that hinder them in creating
and putting their businesses especially when they are enrolled in academic activities

and/or finishing their preferred course. The researchers conducted a survey about what
factors affect them most.
According to Rayport and Jaworski (2004), Business has four categories. These
are business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), consumer-to-business
(C2B), and person-to-person (P2P). Classification of eBusiness depends on where it
came from and where it will be delivered. It states that there are several users of
eBusiness and it is public so everyone can practice it with the presence of internet.

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to identify the major issues the undergraduate students
handle while managing their business and at the same time studying. Today,
entrepreneur is one of the lead characters in terms of business. There is a lack of
comprehensive study about the problems of the students in their studies intertwined
with their business ventures, advantages and disadvantages of building up business for
their course and the main dilemmas of the students undergoing business activities. De
La Salle University Dasmarinas conducts business venturing activities as part of their
curriculum and somehow helps these students to learn by giving them business
experiences. This research is also conducted in order to determine the pros and cons or
advantages and disadvantages of starting business while studying. As an Entrepreneur,
one must have a part of net worth at risk in a business. It doesnt matter how much one
invest, as long as it constitutes a significant portion of what one has. The authors of the
study will question what they risk for the growth of the business. There are numerous
results that can conclude that these students gain a lot and are not being limited in
running their business. In fact, they know how to adjust their schedules and have better
judgment in choosing what business to go for. It implies that the said activity will mold
them to be better at managing business while learning at the same time. Students
learning from their experiences will attain positive attitude and may comply for good
academic performance. The study suggests that its sterling to have such activities in the
premises of the school. This activity will also give students training before they go in
bigger business venturing in the real world. It may increase the quality of students the
University will bring forth thus minimizing the failure rate of the business they will
supervise.
