Technical Assessment requirements & regulations

(Part of the Undergraduate Repertoire & Style module in Years 1-3)

The routines below have been carefully planned in consultation with all the teaching staff and are a departure from
the old-fashioned up and down scales you may be used to. Experience has shown that these routines build up a far
more reliable technique and also a deeper understanding of how music is constructed and the unique sound
properties of each individual key.
You should choose one key and work through the entire routine every day at a speed where you know you will play
no wrong notes, no matter how slowly. You can speed it up later. Writing the scales out and memorising them
creates unnecessary extra work and should be avoided as your ear is your best guide - when you hear the next note
in your head, your fingers should immediately create the correct note. The idea is that, as well as exercising and
training your fingers and tongue, you become immersed in the sound world and geography of that key until it
becomes unthinkable to play wrong notes.
Only when you can run the routine of that key should you move to the next one. Each new key you tackle will
become progressively easier and then you can practise every key. You will be tested on one (chosen at random) of
the four keys specified for your year. Read the instructions carefully and do exactly what it says or you will fail the
exam and, more importantly, fail to build up a good technique without which you are unemployable.

Please note that a pass must be achieved in the Technical Assessment in order for you to be eligible to present a
Second Performance assessment.

Should you not achieve a pass at the first attempt, then you will be permitted TWO further attempts.

With approval from the Head of Department, the first of these further attempts may take place in the
Spring term as long as a minimum period of one month has elapsed since the original attempt. If this is
not possible or advised, then the first further attempt will be scheduled during the first weeks of the
Summer term.

If the first further attempt is failed, then you will not be eligible to sit the Second Performance
assessment in the May/June examination period.

A final attempt will normally be available towards the end of the Summer term.

If you are successful in this final attempt, you will then be eligible to sit the Second Performance
assessment during the September examination period.

If you are unsuccessful in this final attempt, and at the discretion of the Music Examination Board, you
may be permitted to repeat the entire module during the next academic year, before being able to
proceed to the next full year of your studies.
