Mahindra launches the XYLO in Nepal

April 7, 2009, Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), India‟s undisputed market leader
in utility vehicles, recently launched the Mahindra XYLO, in Nepal. The new XYLO is a
versatile and spacious car which is set to redefine road travel in Nepal.

Agni Incorporated Pvt. Ltd., the current distributor of Mahindra vehicles in Nepal, will be the
local distributor for the XYLO. Customers will have a choice of two XYLO models - a luxury
7-seater model, the E8, and the 8-seater model, the E2.

The vehicle was first introduced in India in January 2009, where it launched to much critical
acclaim.

Mahindra has invested more than US$ 100 million in the development of the XYLO, which
included setting up a new robotic body shop at its Nashik plant in India, as well as an
additional trim line at the final assembly shop. Over 200 dies and more than 1,000 new parts
were developed for the XYLO.

“The XYLO offers an extraordinary level of luxurious comfort and technology at a very cost-
effective price. We are delighted to launch it in Nepal where the Mahindra brand is the
market leader in the Utility Vehicle and Pick Up segments. Our distributor, Agni Incorporated
Pvt. Ltd. has been associated with Mahindra for several years and has made a significant
contribution to its success in Nepal. With its wide national network and in-depth knowledge
of the local market, Agni will provide us with a strong competitive edge in the Nepalese
automobile market,” said Mr. Pravin Shah, Executive Vice President, International
Operations, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

“We are delighted to extend our association with Mahindra in Nepal, where it has been a
respected brand name for over 15 years. The fuel-efficient and feature-rich XYLO is suitable
for both young professionals and families and is ideal for cross country travel as it offers an
extraordinary level of luxurious comfort at a very cost-effective price,” said Mr. Cabinet
Shrestha, Managing Director, Agni Incorporated Pvt. Ltd.

The automobile industry in Nepal is growing at a rapid rate with major Indian, Japanese,
Chinese and Korean manufacturers present. The industry is also of great importance to
Nepal as it is a land locked country and road is the only means of transport. Agriculture,
industry, trade and tourism all depend on land travel to a great extent.

Engine & Transmission

The Mahindra XYLO is powered by the technologically advanced 2.5-litre m-Eagle CRDe
engine and delivers 83.5 kW at 3,800 rpm and 235.4 Nm between 1800 and 3000 rpm. The
engine has been refined for better drivability and updated with other technological
advancements like dual pilot injections, hydraulic valve adjusters, an automatic belt
tensioner and a recalibrated ECU.

Its low kerb weight coupled with the robust m-Eagle CRDe engine which drives the rear
wheels, offers very good drivability. The engine is linked to a five-speed manual gearbox and
improved power delivery and reworked gear ratios play a key role in the engine‟s enhanced
performance.
The XYLO clocks 0-60 km/h in 5.8 seconds, with a top speed of 155 km/h, and returns a fuel
economy average of 12-14 kilometres per litre in urban and highway cycles.

Development and Testing

Mahindra followed global product development processes in creating the XYLO, with the
vehicle completely engineered around the customer. Initial development of the XYLO started
back in 2004, with more than 150 engineers contributing to the development of this world
class vehicle.

The Mahindra XYLO was created keeping the global customer in mind. Project team
members travelled extensively and conducted over 1100 customer interviews in order to
better understand their needs. The team also undertook „Virtual Validation‟ with over 1500+
CAE simulations for „First Time Right Design & Development‟.

The XYLO was also thoroughly tested for „real world usage‟ across the world to expose the
vehicle to extreme conditions. Over 100 prototype vehicles covered nearly a million
kilometres of stringent testing.

In addition, some of the leading names in automotive technology have contributed to the
development of the Mahindra XYLO. These include Lear for the seating system, Subros for
the air-conditioning system (HVAC), Lumax for lamps and Lotus for engineering. These
companies were involved right from the conceptualisation stage and testing was done at
their facilities worldwide to ensure global quality standards.

Spacious, Well-Stocked Interior

The interior of the XYLO is all about space, comfort and convenience, ensuring a
pleasurable ride for all occupants. Completely engineered from the inside out, the XYLO
keeps all the needs and wants of the would-be passenger in mind. This translates into
surprising legroom, both in the second and third row.

Independent AC vents in the XYLO E8 ensure that the Surround Cool Dual AC cools all
corners of this spacious car with individual controls for each passenger. This is
complemented by ample cabin heating and ventilation. The Mahindra XYLO also offers Flat
Bed front seats, just like in the business class of a world-class airline. Additional features
include foldable flight trays behind the front seats in the XYLO E8, individual reading lights
for passengers and conveniently placed laptop and cell phone charging points on both
models.

Close attention to the finer details is what makes the XYLO a winner. The car's doors are
fitted with puddle lamps, giving passengers visibility while alighting from the car at night. The
cabin lights dim gradually after a few minutes, giving passengers enough time to settle inside
the car.

On the XYLO E8, captain seats with wide foldable arm rests for occupants in the first two
rows provide additional comfort. This last row in the XYLO E8 also features an armrest in
the middle with additional storage space for drinks and miscellaneous items.

Seat configuration in the XYLO E8 is 2-2-3 (or 2-3-3 with the optional second row bench),
while the E2 accommodates an additional passenger in a 2-3-3 set-up. The rear bench and
the second row seats can be flipped for additional luggage space and spring loading
simplifies any adjustment required. A small recess on the inside of the rear door frame acts
as a grab handle to make access to the back row easier.

The driver‟s seat on the XYLO is ergonomically designed with height adjustment control to
maximise comfort on long drives. The seats in the E8 also provide additional lumbar support
which can be adjusted to three positions. A tiltable steering wheel on both models allows
drivers to find that perfect driving position.

The XYLO E8 also features the tech-savvy Digital Drive Assist System (DDAS). An
alphanumeric display in the centre panel, the DDAS has features such as an onboard
computer to calculate mileage and distance permissible. The system is easy to read and
provides useful data at a quick glance. Standard information available includes date, time,
inside and outside temperature and relative humidity. It also lets you know exactly which
direction your Mahindra XYLO is headed in. Press a button and you are informed of your
gear position and speed. The DDAS will even tell you how long your fuel will last and share
information on your average speed and the instant mileage clocked by you. All of which
ensures that you derive optimum mileage from your Mahindra XYLO. The E8 also boasts an
Intellipark Reverse Assist which provides a visual prompt in the rear view mirror, showing
you the distance between the rear bumper and any object behind you.

The 2 Din Entertainment System in the XYLO E8 enables playback from MP3s, CDs, SD
cards and USB devices. An illuminated keyhole ring allows drivers to conveniently locate
the keyhole even in pitch dark conditions.

Utility spaces abound in the XYLO with a well defined centre console with ample space for
CDs, magazines, etc. Both models have a lockable storage tray under the driver‟s seat.

The XYLO E8 boasts an additional array of standard features including power steering,
electric windows, central locking, keyless entry, fog lights, an electric fuel lid opener,
electronically adjustable rear view mirrors and plush interiors. The XYLO E2 also has power
steering, an electric fuel lid opener, an immobiliser and electronically operated windows.

Appearance & Handling

The dynamic-looking Mahindra XYLO measures 1895 mm in height, 4525 mm in length and
1850 mm in width. It has a turning radius of 5.4 m, making it as easy as a sedan to
manoeuvre in and out of parking spaces. The XYLO has a ground clearance of 186 mm,
allowing easy entry and exit out of the vehicle.

Integrated bumpers, chunky alloy wheels and strong curves on the bonnet and fenders add
to the XYLO E8‟s stature.

Several hours of testing and development has resulted in a stiffer chassis with reduced
unsprung masses, providing a smoother ride. Mahindra has also optimised the suspension
with a multi-link coil spring system in the rear and independent coil springs in the front. Gas
shock absorbers with European-manufactured valves provide additional damping.

The steering is well-weighted and provides enough feedback to allow for easy driving.
Braking is supplied by discs in the front and drums in the rear.
