Hack Circus Ecology

Andr Sampaio Kong
Royal College of Art, London
andrekong.com

lens to the future

If the future of the built environment lies in the hands of
fearless architecture graduates like the Royal College of Arts
Andr Sampaio Kong, its foundations are about to be shaken.
A theatre for the post-tragic condition of subverted capitalist
technologies, muses Kong, referring to The Hack Circus, his
graduate showcase recently nominated for the RIBA Silver
Medal. The Hack Circus is a critique of current technologies,
which are masking real climate change under the guise of a
seamless, virtually augmented continuum of trivial
delights, he explains.
Reacting to a digitally media-ted surveillance society,
Hack Circus proposes a radical, social-libertarian, selfsustainable community, leveraging itself off existing hardware,
hacking alternatives, unlocking their full potential and going
beyond the narrow limitations of ecological design.
Rethinking the role of technology in a rapidly evolving
design landscape, Kongs organic although extreme
approach demonstrates the kind of thinking required to
sustain a marriage between architecture, technology and the
natural environment.

focus on form
How important is form in design? Floralia, a flower vase by Eragatory,
uses form to create motion, orchestrated through the use of 3D printing
to achieve harmony between functionality, organic beauty and digital
aesthetics. Engineering firm Arup takes this concept to an industrial
stage, creating bespoke 3D-printed steel construction joints to achieve
more efficient structures, a development it believes signals a whole
new direction for the use of additive manufacturing in the field of
construction and engineering. In a more hands-on approach, Dutch
designer Pepe Heykoop turns to the humble hands in some of the
poorest areas of Mumbai, India, operating a studio teaching men
and women how to produce high-end design with largely recycled
materials in various organic forms.

Biotope Bird Hide

look TO NATURE
Architecture is a tool to protect and promote birds,
wildlife and nature, proclaims Tormod Amundsen, Master
Architect and CEO of Biotope. Branded as Norways first
and only architectural office with special expertise on birds
and birdwatching, Biotope engages in pro-nature projects
including birdhides, shelters and nature trails, and
produces exhibitions and arranges educational workshops.
Describing Biotopes niche projects as challenging,
Amundsen explains that his firms philosophy is
redeemed by its ability to use architecture to enhance
the understanding and experience of the natural
environment. In many cases I think what architecture
lets you experience should be given much more focus than
the building designs themselves, Amundsen explains.
As we continue to observe the constant growth of
the built environment due to rising populations and
technology, Biotope provides a refreshing means to give
and look back to nature.

inspired by the earth

As consideration for the natural landscape and its inhabitants increases
with new technologies making sustainable design more feasible, so too has
natures ability to inspire architecture and design. Ho Chi Minh City-based
Vo Trong Nghia Architects explores this concept through its bamboo
lotus-inspired pavillion, based on the beauty and growth cycle of Vietnams
national flower. In Bligh Tanners award-winning installation design, the
anatomy of the human body is called upon with a cochlear-inspired design,
using Corten, stainless steel and rock to ground the design back to nature.
Planexs new Storage Guide includes office furniture that facilitates the
installation of indoor greenery, while Casamania calls on its green thumb
to create a table with subtle reference to a wheelbarrow.

In 1974 Llus Clotet and Oscar Tusquets conceptualised the
Catalano bench, which went on to become a keynote design
for the then-new chapter of outdoor furniture. Its success lay
within the virtues of steel, which created an unsurpassable
ergonomic aesthetic and resilient form. In celebration of
Catalanos 40th anniversary, Axalta Coating Systems has
created four bright versions in pastel tones, to give a new life
to the celebrated design. In terms of memory and perception,
humans are incredibly receptive to colour. In fact, using colour
to animate design and photography is a popular technique, as
seen in the latest product campaigns from At Work* With Camira,
Nolan UDA and Pedrali.

Lighting is an essential tool for the designer, holding
the ability to open, elevate or confine physical areas,
and to generate a curated mood to influence the
experience of place. The hanging pendant light holds
the remarkable potential to satisfy these briefs, as
well as become a charismatic addition to the interior
design scheme.

wooden narratives
An incredible quality of wood is its ability to embed narratives
into design. Exploring this concept, we turn to products and
spaces that use wood to instil emotion, define an aesthetic, or
serve a sustainable purpose. In the case of Bruns Acoustics: We
salvage timbers that have fallen in storms or non-native species
such as Camphor Laurel that have become a threat to our native
forests. For Japanese brand, Apato, the Sky Deck balcony table
is Torafu Architects first design for Ishinomaki Lab, a community workshop, and was built by the people of Ishinomaki after the
2011 tsunami. Or, in the case of Adam Markowitzs Fred Table,
the design was conceived after Markowitz studied in Denmark,
and is imbued by the modernist simplicity of Danish masters such
as Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl.

Dr. Trevor Leong, Oncologist

Each room of our home is individual so we can retreat to find our own space.
It is an oasis. One of our favourite pieces of furniture is the Bend sofa.
I know my daughter Sarah likes it because its bouncy but for me its unique.
Its functional and casual and reflects the way we live.

contempLating
atmosphere
Nature causes us astonishment that is beyond our imagination. We may
be shaken by its power, be struck with awe and praise the inscrutable
beauty simultaneously. What exactly are these feelings? Why can nature
move our hearts? And how do we sense it? asks Tokujin Yoshioka in his
solo show, Crystallize, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
With Tchaikovskys Swan Lake as a musical accompaniment, Yoshiokas
installations are the result of a nearly half-year-long growth process
of crystal formations. Echoing this musing, here we explore how light,
form, and colour can influence the experience of space.

Bentwood chair
Frank Gehry

Frank Gehrys architecture draws its strength from the sculptural approach
from which he has expanded the vocabulary of buildings. Bringing this same
approach to furniture, Gehry constructed the Bentwood collection with
interwoven strips of Maple, based on the srength of apple crates. The ribbonlike designs transcend the conventions of style by focusing on the essential
challenge of deriving form from function. The result is a structurally and
aesthetically light masterpiece. With this complexity of form in mind, we
take to furniture from Chair Solutions, CULT, Healthezone and Prototype to
consider how the function of a chair from work to lounge is largely a result
of its design aesthetic.
