2.2 Universal PDU

Functions
The universal PDU provides the functions of power distribution, power and environment
monitoring, short circuit protection, and lightning protection.
l

The universal PDU supports flexible power distribution methods to satisfy the power
and channel requirements of the devices inside the cabinet.

It supports two independent groups (group A and group B) of input power and
implements 1+1 power backup.

ZXUN iCX(MSCS) Hardware Description

The universal PDU monitors the input/output power supply, cabinet, and environment
in the equipment room in real time.

It monitors the status of input/output power and raises alarms when faults occur.

It provides door control for the cabinet and equipment room, and monitors the
temperature, humidity, smoke, infrared emission, and lightning protection in the
equipment room.

It provides a group of external RS485 interfaces for communication with service

processing boards in shelves. Through these interfaces, it reports alarms when
the monitored power modules, lightning protection devices, or external sensors
are abnormal. The alarms can also be seen from the indicators on the board
panel.

The universal PDU provides the short circuit protection function.

A circuit breaker is set at the output end of each power channel to control the output
circuit of the universal PDU and prevent short circuits.

The universal PDU provides the lightning protection function.

Arrester modules are set inside the universal PDU, which compose a multi-level
lightning protection system together with the arrester modules of shelves and boards.

Components
The universal PDU is composed of a power distribution subrack, a backplane of PDU
(PDUB), a PDU Connector board (PDUC), and a PDU Monitor board (PDUM), see Figure
2-2 (The top cover is omitted in the diagram.)

Blank panel
Blank panels are inserted into empty slots to prevent air or dust from entering the shelf
and make the shelf look better.

Slot Allocation
The front side and rear side of the E4140 shelf respectively provide 14 slots. For the slot
allocation at the front side, see Figure 3-3.
Figure 3-3 Slot Allocation Diagram

From the front view of the shelf, slots from left to right are numbered 01 to 14. In slots
01 to 06 and slots 09 to 14, only processing boards can be installed. In slots 07 and
08, only switching boards can be installed.
From the rear view of the shelf, slots from right to left are numbered 01 to 14. In slots
01 to 06 and slots 09 to 14, only the rear cards of processing boards can be installed.
In slots 07 and 08, only the rear cards of switching boards can be installed.

An update channel exists between two slots (for example, slots 01 and 03) to provide
backup, update, board status, and active/standby or load sharing information to the boards
in these slots, so that the active/standby or load sharing function can be implemented. For

Heat Dissipation
The NFCM cools the components inside the shelf by blowing air from bottom to top. Air
comes in through the holes on the intake panel, then goes through the dust screen, and
finally goes out from the top of the rear side of the shelf.
The dust screen assists the NFCM in filtering the dust in the air to guarantee smooth
operation of the whole heat dissipation system.

Chapter 3 E4140 Shelf

The NCMM manages all the hardware inside the shelf to implement Field Replaceable Unit
(FRU) monitoring and the management of hot swapping, alarms, logs, assets, and power.

Note:
An FRU can be replaced on site, such as a processing board, switching board, subcard, fan
module, or power module. FRU information describes the specific FRU in detail, including
the production date and manufacturer.

l
l
l

l
l
l

FRU monitoring: monitors the operating statuses of FRUs.

Hot swapping management: manages hot-swap statuses of FRUs and operations on
them.
Alarm management: receives alarms reported by FRUs and handles the alarms
according to FRU information. For example, if a board reports a high temperature
alarm, the speed of fan modules is increased by alarm management.
Log management: provides integrated system security logs and the log retrieval
function.
Assets management: allows users to configure and query assets information of the
shelf.
Power management: allows users to query the power status of the shelf and control
the power distribution.

The shelf is configured with two NCMMs, which work in active/standby mode. The two
NCMMs synchronize data through the active/standby synchronization network port or the
synchronization IPMB.
l

l
l

If the two NCMMs are both powered on, the NCMM in the left slot is active and the
NCMM in the right slot is standby by default. If one NCMM is powered on first, this
NCMM is active, and the other NCMM is standby.
The active NCMM manages the operations of FRUs, and the standby NCMM is in
standby state.
When the active NCMM fails, the standby NCMM automatically shifts to active state
and starts working (as long as the active and standby NCMMs can synchronize data
properly.)

Alarm Box
Table of Contents
Alarm Box Structure ...................................................................................................5-1
Specifications .............................................................................................................5-5

5.1 Alarm Box Structure

Functions
An alarm box is connected to an alarm server through a hub or layer-2 switch to receive
alarm data from the alarm server, so that it can raise light and sound alarms of different
levels, show alarm information on an LCD display, and send short messages about the
alarms.
l

Alarm sound function

Through a built-in speaker, the alarm box can raise alarms in buzzer mode or human
voice mode.

Alarm light function

The alarm box can lighten indicators of different alarm levels (from low to high: green,
orange, blue, and red).

Alarm server group indication function

Ten alarm server indicators are set on the alarm box panel to respectively indicate the
status (such as communication or alarm status) of ten alarm server groups.
The alarm box supports up to 128 alarm servers (10 alarm server groups).

Short message sending function

By using a built-in mobile phone module, the alarm box can send short messages
about current alarms to the mobile phones of specified maintenance personnel. The
alarm box supports sending short messages in a Code Division Multiple Access
(CDMA) or Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) network, but it cannot
support both CDMA and GSM networks at the same time.

LCD display and button setting function

Through an LCD display, the alarm box can display the alarm statistical information
sent from an alarm server. The alarm box menu and buttons on the alarm box panel
can set operational parameters of the alarm box, such as the IP address, UDP port
number, button sound switch, and backlight control.

ZXUN iCX(MSCS) Hardware Description

Remote access function

The alarm box can be connected to an alarm server in the same network segment or
in a different network segment. To connect an alarm box to a remote alarm server,
you need to add related routing information on the alarm box. Thus, the alarm box
can be placed flexibly (for example, in your office), not necessarily in the equipment
room.

Multi-office integration function

The servers connected to the alarm box are generally not in the same network
segment, so the multi-office integration function is often used together with the
remote access function.

Inter-VLAN access function

Through a layer-2 switch, the alarm box can be connected to the alarm servers in
different Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs). Thus, these alarm servers are isolated
from each other, and you need not pay much money to buy a layer-3 switch.

Network storm detection function

According to the actual network conditions, you can set the threshold value of a
network storm to monitor network congestion due to broadcast packets.

Group-based alarm confirmation function

Alarms can be confirmed by alarm server group number. That is, the alarms reported
by the alarm servers in the same group are confirmed at a time.

Alarm statistics and query function

Through the LCD, you can query the alarm statistical data at different levels of each
alarm server.

Automatic mute function

The automatic mute function can be set by alarm level.

Remote operation function

You can use a Telnet tool to remotely log in to the alarm box and run MML commands
to configure alarm servers, routes, VLANs, short message, and time parameters.

7.2 Disk Array

Functions
This topic takes ZXF20 S260V2 as an example to introduce the functions of a disk array.
ZXF20 S260V2 disk array is a dual-controller iSCSI (that is, IP SAN) storage system
with low cost, high availability and advanced technology. The system is structured with a
redundant hot-swap modularization system, meeting the requirements for the extendable
storage application of high reliability. The storage system has the standard configuration
of high-speed buffer of 2GB, providing four interfaces for 1-Gb iSCSI host channels. With
the extended-cabinet cascading system, 48 SAS/SATA disks can be configured. Further,
the system supports the connection of DAS and SAN, with high availability, reliability, and
maintainability.
ZXF20 S260 has the following features:
l

It is designed by using non-cable and full-redundancy modularization technology.

Each module supports online hot-swap, with reliability, availability, and maintainability
much higher than that of the low-end iSCSI having server architecture.
The controller uses the Intel X-Scale processor with high performance. Each
controller supports 1GB high speed buffer and is designed with the special Cache
access algorithm to provide the data I/O performance leading in the industry.
The TCP/IP load engine connection mode completely based on hardware is used to
resolve or relieve the problem of consuming a large quantity of host CPU resources by
regulating the order of the IP packets through software, thus the system performance
is improved.
