Put a circle around any station number above that resulted in the creation of
a homogeneous mixture.
Put a box around any station number above that resulted in the creation of a
heterogeneous mixture.
The reaction that occurred at station 1 is shown below. Circle the reactants in
the reaction above. Put a box around the products.

Matter and Change Review Lab

Instructions
Dispose of all waste in the waste beaker provided. Leave your lab
station clean before rotating to the next station.
Stations 1 - 6 involve physical and chemical changes.
Perform the reaction and determine if it is a physical or chemical change.
If it is a chemical change, record the number(s) of which pieces of evidence
prove it is a chemical change. Use the numbers below in the evidence
column of your data table.
1: Color change
2: Precipitate formation
3: Gas production
4: Heat absorbed or released
Station 1:
Pick up a small piece of magnesium ribbon with the crucible tongs and heat
it over the Bunsen burner until you observe a change. DO NOT look
directly at the flame!
Station 2:
Place a weigh boat on the balance and press zero to remove the mass of
the weigh boat. Measure out 1 g of sugar. Add the sugar to 10 mL of water
in a test tube and stir.
Station 3:
3a. Crush up a piece of Alka Seltzer in a baggie.
3b. Add it to water in a beaker.
Station 4:
In a test tube, add 5 drops rubbing alcohol (2-propanol) to 10 drops of water.
Stir
Station 5:
5a. Use a mortar and pestle to crush up a piece of chalk.
5b. Add half of the crushed chalk to 3 mL of vinegar a in a test tube.
5c. Add the other half of the crushed chalk to 3 mL of water in a test tube.
Station 6:
In a test tube, combine 10 drops each of the calcium chloride (CaCl2) and 10
drops of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) solutions.
Station 7:
1. Place a weigh boat on the balance and then press zero to remove
the mass of the weigh boat. Add several pieces of copper and find the
mass of the copper.

2. Take the same pieces of copper and find their volume using water
displacement in the graduated cylinder.
3. Empty the water. Dry off the copper and return it to the original
beaker.
4. Calculate the density of the copper.

Station 8:
1. Measure the length, width, and height in cm of the block at your lab
station.
2. Calculate the volume of the block.
3. Find the mass of the block using the balance.
4. Calculate the density of the block.
Station 9:
Observe each of the substances at the station and determine if each is an
element, compound, homogeneous mixture, or heterogeneous mixture.
Station 10:
Assemble the puzzle to review the terms related to phase changes and
states of matter.
