EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I
Lesson Plan Integrating Technology & Pedagogy
Name: Todd Megan

Date 11/14/2014

Earth Science Core Curriculum Standards:

Standard 4, 2.1j

Properties of Earths internal structure (crust, mantle, inner core, and outer
core) can be inferred from the analysis of the behavior of seismic waves (including velocity and
refraction).

Standard 4, 2.1k

The outward transfer of Earths internal heat drives convective circulation in

the mantle that moves the lithospheric plates comprising Earths surface

Standard 4, 2.1l

The lithosphere consists of separate plates that ride on the more fluid
asthenosphere and move slowly in relationship to one another, creating convergent, divergent, and
transform plate boundaries. These motions indicate Earth is a dynamic geologic system.

These plate boundaries are the sites of most earthquakes, volcanoes, and young mountain
ranges.
Compared to continental crust, ocean crust is thinner and denser. New ocean crust
continues to form at mid-ocean ridges.
Earthquakes and volcanoes present geologic hazards to humans. Loss of property, personal
injury, and loss of life can be reduced by effective emergency preparedness.

Standard 4, 2.1m

Many processes of the rock cycle are consequences of plate dynamics. These
include the production of magma (and subsequent igneous rock formation and contact
metamorphism) at both subduction and rifting regions, regional metamorphism within subduction
zones, and the creation of major depositional basins through down-warping of the crust.

Standard 4, 2.1n

Many of Earths surface features such as mid-ocean ridges/rifts,

trenches/subduction zones/island arcs, mountain ranges (folded, faulted, and volcanic), hot spots,
and the magnetic and age patterns in surface bedrock are a consequence of forces associated with
plate motion and interaction

Standard 4, 2.1o

Plate motions have resulted in global changes in geography, climate, and the
patterns of organic evolution.
Standard 4, 2.1p
Landforms are the result of the interaction of tectonic forces and the
processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition.

ISTE NET Standards:

2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a
distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and
formats
c. Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures
d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems
4. Technology Operations and Concepts
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
a. Understand and use technology systems
b. Select and use applications effectively and productively
c. Troubleshoot systems and applications
d. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies
Lesson Objective(s):

Students will be able to draw and show a map of the inner structure of Earth.
Students will be able to describe what lithospheric plates are.
Students will be able to demonstrate why these plates move.
Students will be able to place tectonic features on a map of the Earth with 100% accuracy.
Students will be able to describe how plate tectonics has resulted in many catastrophic events in
modern history.
Students will be able to describe how the movement of the plates are related mountain building.

Students be able to describe the effects plate tectonics has on our planet.

Introduce the Learning Activity:

1. This lesson will be a review of the Plate Tectonics Unit. It will surmise the prior lessons in the
unit and help prepare the students for the summative map exam.
2. This lesson is designed to encourage sharing of information and study material for the exam.
Provide Information:
1. This lesson will be done using my web page,
http://student.plattsburgh.edu/tmega001/index.html .
2. The students will sign into Google Drive.
3. The students will be instructed to visit the Resources tab.
4. Here, the students will press control and click on the Earth Science is the Schist Chat Room
link.
5. Students will connect using Guest in the Nick category.
6. The students will be instructed to ask questions through the chat room. The teacher can
reply, but the students are encouraged to help each other by responding to the question on
the chat room.
7. Introductions can be made.
8. The students will be instructed to click the Interactive Review link and begin the activity.
9. Upon the completion of the review, the students will save their test results and share it with
me, tmega001@plattsburgh.edu, on Google Drive.
10. The teacher will explain how to upload to the drive and share it with the teacher.
Provide Practice:
1. Each content objective will be touched upon in the review questions. The students will
submit their quiz results and the teacher will assess the amount and area of extra
reviewing that may be necessary.
2. With the chat room, the students will communicate and collaborate on answers.
3. Using the interactive website and uploading the exam results to Drive, the students may
have to practice trouble shooting skills, or simply refine their skills at doing so. The
teacher will instruct some students as to the method.

Provide Knowledge of Results:

1. The teacher will provide feedback in the chat room. The teacher is the only non-anonymous
member of the chat.
2. Each exam will be looked at on Drive by the teacher. A word document with feedback and
possible extra practice problems will be provided to each student.
Method of Assessment:
1. The assessment will be created by the interactive website and graded. The teacher will then
look at each exam. A sample exam is provided below, on the website.
