Border Crisis
44
Issue Description
It is estimated that more than 60,000
unaccompanied children from Central American
countries have surrendered to U.S. border patrol
agents at the Mexican border over the past 2 years.
Additional resources have been requested by the
Obama administration to increase staffing in order to
speed up the processing of cases, feed and house
the children while their cases are being heard, and
deport those who are found not eligible to stay in
the country.

Issue Description
A law passed in 2008 created a special process for
dealing with unaccompanied children from Central
America in order to ensure that they did not become
victims of human trafficking. The law requires that
each childs unique circumstances be considered
before making a determination to deport them to
their home countries and children with a reasonable
fear of persecution could be granted asylum.

Issue Description
An issue that the Ferguson shooting and subsequent social
unrest has brought to light is the militarization of police
departments across the United States. In reaction to the
September 11th attacks and in preparation for potential future
terrorist activity, over the past 10 years more than $40 Billion
in military grade equipment has been purchased by local
police departments.
