Cigarette is a small cylinder of finely cut tobacco leaves rolled in thin paper
for smoking. The cigarette is ignited at one end and allowed to smoulder; its smoke
is inhaled from the other end, which is held in or to the mouth; in some cases a cigarette
holder may be used as well. Most modern manufactured cigarettes are filtered and include
reconstituted tobacco and other additives.
On the other hand, an electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette or e-cig, is an
electrical device that stimulates the act of tobacco smoking by producing an inhaled vapor. It
has the physical sensation, appearance and often the flavour ( with or without nicotine
content) of inhaled tobacco smoke without its odor or more importantly, its health risks.
According to the American Lung Association (ALA), smoking is the direct cause of
87 percent of lung cancer cases and of most cases of emphysema and chronic bronchitits. It is
also a major factor in coronary heart disease and stroke. It may be causally related to
malignancies on other parts of the body and has been linked to variety of disorders, including
slowed healing of wounds, infertility and peptic ulcer disease.
Also, Cigarettes carry serious health risks, which are more prevalent than in other
tobacco products. Nicotine, the primary psychoactive chemical in tobacco and therefore
cigarettes, is addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease and
lose on average 14 years of life. Cigarette use by pregnant women has also been shown to
cause birth defects, including low birth weight, fetal abnormalities, and premature
birth. Second-hand smoke from cigarettes has been shown to be injurious to
bystanders, which has led to legislation that has prohibited smoking in many workplaces and
public areas.
Because of these conditions, people are encouraged to stop cigarette smoking. One of
the ways they have used to let people stay away from tobacco smoking was using gums,
patches and the newest was the e-cigs. In smoking e-cigarettes, the harmful chemicals are
removed like the tar and ammonia. But replacing them with liquid and more potent nicotine
may cause many unwanted effects. The E- liquids are tobacco extract with mixtures of food
colorings, and other chemicals. The drug is more potent in liquid form. These E-liquids are
found to be powerful neurotoxins. When a small amount is ingested or absorbed through skin,
vomiting and seizures may occur. A teaspoon of it can kill a small child.
Since e-cigarettes are now prevalent, many have stood out for the government to act
and seize control to this product. Yes, it already has regulations, but seeing the effects and its
potency, I do think more strict regulatory body should handle the business of e-liquids. Ecigs has also made a societal impact. E-cigs is now considered the healthier choice. Most of
the people uses the E-cigs as a getaway smoking. Since it is healthier, it encourages the
younger generation to try and venture out the habit of smoking. With all the effects of Ecigarettes, I hope people will make more intelligent and wise choice. It doesnt mean its
healthier than cigarette smoking, we should do it. Living a healthy lifestyle and staying away
from vices is still the best way to achieve overall feeling of wellness.
