A hydraulic press has a ram of 50 cm diameter and a plunger of 5 cm diameter as shown


in figure-1. Find the weight lifted by the hydraulic press when the force applied at the
plunger is 500 N.

Derive an expression for the time period of the oscillation of a floating body in terms of
radius of gyration and metacentric height of the floating body.

Q.7

A rectangular plane surface is 2 m wide and 3 m deep. It lies in vertical plane in water.
Determine the total pressure and position of centre of pressure on the plane surface when
its upper edge is horizontal and coincides with water surface.

Q.8

State Bernoullis theorem for steady flow of an incompressible fluid. Derive an


expression for Bernoullis theorem from first principle ad state the assumptions made for
such a derivation.

Q.9

The head of water over an orifice of diameter 30 mm is 9 m. Find the actual discharge and
actual velocity of the jet at vena-contracta. Take Co-efficient of discharge = 0.6 and Coefficient of velocity = 0.98.

Q.10 The pressure drop P per unit length in flow through a smooth circular pipe is found to
depend on (i) the flow velocity, u (ii) diameter of the pipe, D (iii) density of the fluid ,
and (iv) the dynamic viscosity .
Using theorem method, evaluate the dimensionless parameters for the flow.

Q.13 The following details refer to a centrifugal pump. Outer diameter : 30 cm. Eye diameter :
15 cm. Blade angle at inlet : 30. Blade angle at outlet : 25. Speed 1450 rpm. The flow
velocity remains constant. The whirl at inlet is zero. Determine the work done per kg.
If the manometric efficiency is 82% and width at outlet is 2 cm, determine the power, o =
76%.
