National Sanitation Conference


Theme: Taking Stock of Progress; defining the future we want on Sanitation
and Hygiene in Malawi
World Toilet Day is a UN recognized event, observed annually on 19 November. This international day of action aims
at breaking the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge.
The Water and Environmental Sanitation Network (WES Network) is proud to announce that it will be hosting a
National Sanitation Conference as part of commemorating the world Toilet day at Golden Peacock in Lilongwe on
Monday, 17th November 2014. The Workshop will be conducted through presentations by experts in the field
followed by plenary that will allow stakeholders to input on the topic under discussion. The proceedings will be
compiled into a report that will inform the direction for National Sanitation Programme in Malawi.
The learning workshop provides a rare opportunity to provide a forum to reflect on what works and what does not
work reflecting on the past and present WASH approaches and define a futuristic WASH programme for Malawi, to
facilitate sharing of experience from local and international policies on Sanitation and how the Sanitation practitioners
can take advantage, to reflect on innovative sanitation programming and financing options that enabled the sector
overcome current challenges to discuss how Malawi can scale up Sanitation Marketing and how best can we monitor
Sanitation Marketing, to reflect service provision and Demand creation, to discuss various technological options for
sanitation in Malawi and their advantages and disadvantages.
Hosted under the theme: Taking stock of progress: Defining the future we want on sanitation and hygiene in
Malawi, the workshop will bring together over 60 participants from the WASH Sector.
About WES Network
WES Network is a membership based Civil Society network that coordinates the work of NGOs working in the water,
sanitation and Hygiene subsector in Malawi. It recognizes the role of Water and Sanitation in economic development
and poverty reduction. WES Network was established in 2005 and got registered with Malawi Government in 2011.
WES Networks head office is in Lilongwe with representation across the country by its member organizations. To
date the WES Network has a membership of over 60 local and international NGO across Malawi.
