WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY
Since
the
countrys
inception,
Philadelphia has been at the forefront
ghting for life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness for all Americans, said Levitz
in a press release. On July 4, 1965, the
gay community chose Philadelphia as
the site, in front of Independence Hall
and the Liberty Bell, to call attention to
the injustices against them. Fifty years
later, we are proud to celebrate their
bravery, determination and the role that
Philadelphia had in that pursuit.
Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings
are among the 40 advocates who took
part in the rst annual reminder outside
Independence Hall in 1965. That number
grew to 150 people on July 4, 1969, less
than a week after the Stonewall riots in
New Yorks Greenwich Village.
The annual reminder protests ended
in 1970 with advocates taking part in a
march from Greenwich Village to Central
Park that commemorated the rst
anniversary of Stonewall. This event was
the rst LGBT Pride march to ever take
place in the United States.
The organized LGBT civil rights
movement began at Independence
Hall and Liberty Bell, Lazin told the
Washington Blade. We have this
remarkable opportunity to honor the
gay pioneers, understand the toxic
homophobia that they faced and then
obviously celebrate what would have
been unimaginable 50 years ago for Frank
and Barbara and the other pioneers.
Equality Forum will chair the committee
that is planning the 50th anniversary of
the rst Philadelphia protest.

WASHINGTON Double takes, hostility from strangers and health care providers
and even reports to Child Protective Services were among the experiences reported by
41 transgender men who became pregnant according to a new study from Obstretrics
and Gynecology reported by NPR.
There were plenty of insensitive comments and harsh experiences that troubled
these men, both in and out of the health care setting, ranging from inappropriate use of
pronouns to actually turning them away and denying prenatal care, NPR reports.
They just feel a lot of isolation from the health care community, said Dr. Jennifer
Kerns, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at
the University of California, San Francisco and the senior author. And we have some
indication from our qualitative results that depression might be exacerbated for folks
who are transgender, both during pregnancy and after.
The study came about because a medical student working with Kerns, Alexis Light,
found herself elding questions from transgender male friends about whether theyd
be able to conceive and what pregnancy would be like.
Light, now a rst-year resident in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington Hospital
Center in D.C., didnt know the answer and couldnt nd it in the medical literature. So
she asked Kerns to help her design a research project to nd out. Kerns recognized it
as a cutting-edge subject, with a recent opinion paper from the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists highlighting the need for high-quality health care for
transgender individuals, NPR reports.
With such a small survey, its impossible draw rm conclusions; Kerns and Light both
said more research is needed. But one thing they did learn was that prior testosterone
use didnt seem to aect pregnancy outcome. Some transgender men use testosterone
to look and sound more masculine.

CHICAGO A new report nds that bisexuals face more discrimination and are more
heavily aected by poverty, violence and health issues than their straight, gay or lesbian
counterparts, the Windy City Times reports.
Octobers Understanding Issues Facing Bisexual Americans, from the Movement
Advancement Project, BiNet USA and the Bisexual Resource Center, utilized academic
and medical studies to form its conclusions and suggestions for the bi community,
which it said is more than half of the 9 million LGBT people in the U.S., the Times
article notes.
Despite comprising the largest population within the LGBT community, bisexual
people are among the most invisible, said Ineke Mushovic, executive director of the
Movement Advancement Project. The failure to account for bisexual lives and experiences
compounds a lack of social support and keeps bisexual people in the closet.
The report notes one reason bisexuals may face higher rates of poverty,
unemployment, negative health outcomes and violence is because bisexual people face
discrimination from within the LGBT community as well as from non-LGBT people.
Mental health issues were among those addressed in the report, which cited other
studies nding bi men are more than four times, or in another report, perhaps as high
as six times, more likely to attempt suicide than straight men.
Another report found that bi teens who consider suicide still struggle with suicidal
thoughts into adulthood unlike many straight peers, the Times article said.

VIEWPOINT
Ward races.
These same politicians have failed to reform local election procedures.
Lets examine the facts.
In this months election of dual At-Large
D.C. Council seats, both Democratic incumbent Anita Bonds and newly elected Elissa
Silverman won only 24 and 12 percent of
the vote, respectively. These preliminary results include early voting and Election Day
totals as released by the D.C. Board of Elections and factor in the number of undervotes by those selecting fewer than two allowed ballot choices. Later this week a nal
report including absentee and provisional
ballots will be issued.
Silverman actually nished third in the
crowded 15-candidate eld trailing nearly
two-to-one the number of votes not cast in
the race.
Even eliminating them primarily generated by those bullet-voting for a single
candidate as election ocials will do in
the nal report, the numbers dont change
much. Counting only actual votes cast,
Bonds won almost 31 percent, with nearly
72,000 votes and matching the percentage
she won when rst elected in a 2012 special election. Silverman, however, won only
16 percent, with slightly more than 36,000
votes from 150,000 voters.

Marvin Bowser worked hard to help his sister become Washingtons next
mayor. After it became clear Muriel Bowser had successfully fended o David
Catania and Carol Schwartz last week, Bowser says it was pretty incredible.
It was really exhilarating and a relief at the same time, the 53-year-old
Washington native says. We ran a good campaign and we immediately
started transition. You work hard, you got it, now its time to run with it and
thats what were doing.
Marvin and Muriel are two of ve siblings. Shes the youngest; hes in the
middle. Hes worked as a systems engineer with Mission Systems, a defense
contractor, for about 15 years.
Except for a four-year stint in the 1980s in Germany, Bowser has lived his
entire life in Washington. He and partner Mike Yates have been together for
10 years.
Bowser lives in Hillcrest and enjoys rowing, gardening, his koi pond and
making stained glass in his free time.

DINING
Trues are expensive but have the ability to add one-of-a-kind avor to many kinds of dishes.
Theyre expensive,
theyre funny looking
and totally addictive
By KRISTEN HARTKE
The thing about trues is that not that
many Americans actually ever eat them, or
honestly even know what they are, but were
supposed to know that they are amazing.
Turn on any cooking show on the Food
Network and youll eventually hear a chef
waxing poetic about these knobby little
darlings, but still not have any idea what
they taste like.
Chef Todd Gray of Equinox, a restaurant
now in its second decade just a stones
throw from the White House, loves trues
and is happy to showcase them at his
restaurant during true season, which
lasts from October through January. A
true is basically a type of fungus that
grows at the base of trees, often unearthed
by dogs or pigs that are specially trained
to root them out. The white true is most
commonly found in the Piedmont region
of Italy, although there is an American
variety found in Oregon.
The cost? Around $1,500 to $1,700 a
pound, says Chef Gray. We currently
source our trues from Alba, Italy but
have procured domestically as well. They
are denitely in short supply it always
depends on the harvest. We have a
vendor that we have been working with
for over 20 years so he always takes care
of us its denitely a relationship thing
to get the best trues and pricing.
To put it into context, a pound of
trues is a lot of trues. A somewhat
standard true, about the size of a small
potato, would cost more in the range of
$150 to $200, and, used carefully, could
be added to many dishes. Chef Gray calls
the avor earthy and deeply woodsy
with a slightly pungent raw garlic nasal
sensation. Its a avor that complements
eggs really well, according to the chef,
as well as fettuccine with butter: Those
ingredients allow the true avor of the
true to come through.

Feeling like a stuffed turkey after Thanksgiving? Worried about fitting into your ski gear over the winter holidays or facing your
relatives? Are you always taking care of the rest of your family while feeling frazzled? Do you feel that stress building? Trouble sleeping?
Too often we think of exercise as a luxury. But, there is so much that you can gain from taking care of YOU! You can regain your
focus, set a great example, sleep better, and combat stress and anxiety and find that lost energy to be yourself again. All without a pill. It
is called exercise.
Our personal training studio offers you a safe, non-intimidating environment where with superior trainers you can work out to a
program developed specifically for YOU. Our programming model focuses on posture, alignment, form, muscle imbalances and all of
the components YOU need to better function in daily life.
We offer 2 services: One on one training and partner training. We operate only by appointment and with an efficient
45-minute exercise session, you will be able to build some YOU time into your day.

REALESTATE
which in part represents data for the number of homes sold in the District and the median
sold prices over a seven-year period from 2008-2014. The chart shows that more homes
sell for a higher median price during the spring and then again during the fall (but not as
many and not for as high a median). In contrast, fewer homes sell during the dead of winter
and the summer doldrums, and they sell for lower median prices in those seasons.
Who benets in the spring and fall markets? Primarily sellers, when their properties
command higher prices due to the increased number of buyers looking for homes during nicer weather and before the school year starts. In contrast, buyers will benet in
summer and winter, when there are fewer buyers looking for homes, making sellers
more willing to discount their asking prices. Think of it as an inversion of the law of
supply and demand: When the supply is high, the demand is high. More homes sell for

ATTORNEY AT LAW
higher prices when the number of available homes is higher. (Its important to remember that the trend line for active listings data above will be at least a month ahead of
that for closed sales, since sales contracts typically take 30-45 days to close.)
So where do we stand right now? The chart at the end of this article breaks down the
average data above and shows the median sold price per month for each of the seven
years considered. A couple of conclusions to draw from this chart:
Median sold prices have been rising since 2009.
2014 has had the highest median sold prices on a month-by-month basis (except for
June of 2013) for the past 7 years represented (and, in fact, since 2004).
Median sold prices rose in October rose as expected after lower sold prices in August and September.
So, whats the answer to the opening questions? If youre a buyer, its a great time to
enter the real estate market and should be a great time to nd some relative bargains
over the next four months. If youre a seller wanting to get the highest price for your
property, you should probably wait until spring to put your place on the market after, of course, using the winter to de-clutter and spruce up your place to make its best
impression when the spring season starts. Happy hunting!
