GOP reaches turning

Democrats are still reeling from the drubbing
they took on Election Day, leading to questions
about whether the rapid advancement of marriage
equalitywasa factor in the Republican rout.
It depends on whom you ask and where you look,
but viewing the election results on a national scale,

Thats the assessment of people who know GU Pride

President Thomas A. Lloyd, who has played a pivotal
role up until now as a mostly anonymous government
witness in the prosecution of former Georgetown

A U.S. District Court judge on Monday sentenced
Milzman to one year and one day in prison after he
pleaded guilty in September as part of a plea bargain
deal to a charge of unregistered possession of a
biologic agent or toxin.
His guilty plea came six months after information
provided by Lloyd to campus and D.C. police led to
Milzmans arrest for allegedly manufacturing 123

According to exit poll analysis, 49 percent of
voters supported same-sex marriage, but 48 percent
opposed it. Those numbers demonstrate smaller
support for same-sex marriage than other recent polls
showing nearly 60 percent support for gay nuptials

data, when marriage equality won big at the polls, and
demonstrates more supportthan exit poll data in 2010.

General joins ceremony honoring LGBT veterans

Wreath placed at
Matlovich gravesite in
Congressional Cemetery
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Brigadier General Tammy S. Smith,
deputy chief of sta of the U.S. Army
Reserve, was among a contingent of
about 35 LGBT veterans and their
supporters participating in a Veterans
Day wreath laying ceremony on Monday
in D.C.s Congressional Cemetery.
The event, sponsored by Center Military,
a project of the D.C. Center for the LGBT
Community, took place at the gravesite
of Air Force Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, who
came out as gay on the cover of Time
magazine in 1975, becoming the rst
active duty service member to challenge
the militarys ban on gays.
Matlovich, who died in 1988, was buried
in a section of Congressional Cemetery that
has since become the burial site for other
LGBT people, including military veterans.
Our experience as LGBT veterans is
dierent, Smith, the militarys highestranking openly gay ocer, told the gathering.
And we have a common understanding
of what that dierence is, she said. We
come from a place where we were not
welcome and in many cases we were
viliedand people tried to nd out who
we were in order to prevent us from
continuing our service, she said.
And yet despite that, the most
honorable thing that we did and the thing
that many of us are the most proud of is
that we served our nation, Smith said.
So having a separate memorial and
coming to places such as Leonards
gravesite
acknowledges
that
our
experience is dierent but we have that
common understanding that we are
veterans in our nations military.
Others participating in the ceremony
were U.S. Marine veteran Nicholas
Baatz, co-founder of the local veterans
assistance group LGBT Fallen Heroes
Fund; former Navy SEAL Kristin Beck, a
decorated combat veteran who became
the rst SEAL to come out as transgender;
and Navy veteran Eric Perez, coordinator
of the D.C. Centers military project.
Beck disclosed her transition on CNN
18 months after retiring from active duty
service. She joined Smith at Mondays
ceremony in rejoicing over the sweeping
changes in the military and society in
recent years, including the repeal of
Dont Ask, Dont Tell.
But she noted that for transgender
service members, serving openly in the
military is still not an option and the struggle
to overcome that hurdle continues.
So coming here and everyone being

here right now this entire group this is

what its all about, she said. But being out
is not enough. We need to be active. Out is
not good enough anymore. Weve come a
long way but we have a lot further to go.
Added Beck, Just like every one of us,
Im proud to be an American, Im proud to
be an LGBT American, and Im very proud
to be a veteran.
With Beck and Smith standing beside
him, Perez placed a wreath next to the
Matlovich grave as the others looking on,
including several in military uniforms,
stood at attention.
Its the actions of these people who
have spoken here today that give us
hope, Baatz told the gathering. When I
rst came out in the Marine Corps I really
didnt have a community, he said.
But discovering the Matlovich gravesite
at Congressional Cemetery gave me hope
that the work that he did and the work
that you guys are doing its making a
dierence, he said. Sometimes its just
showing up. So I want to thank everybody
for doing that today.
Smith, who was joined at the ceremony
by her spouse, Tracy Hepner, said after
the event that the changes that have
occurred in the military since she rst
visited the Matlovich gravesite in 2009
have been dramatic.
When I came here to this gravesite for
the rst time I literally hid, even though it
was a public event, she said.
Smith, who has served in the military
for 26 years, was referring to a gathering
at the site as part of the October 2009
March for LGBT Equality, which traveled
from the White House to the Capitol.

And now to be able to come here

on Veterans Day and acknowledge
the service of all veterans is extremely
moving for me, she said.
Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Kevin
Murphy, who attended the ceremony in
uniform, said he, too, was honored to be
able to openly attend an LGBT veterans
event. Hes currently serving his 25th year
in the Air Force.
I think its very important that we do

this type of thing, he said. Initially I

was planning to go to the ceremony at
Arlington National Cemetery. But I think
this one is important because its very
much a part of what I am.
Perez, an Army veteran who served a
tour in Iraq, said he was pleased with how
the event went.
It was a beautiful day and there was
a really good turnout, he said. Im very
happy to be a veteran today.

White House names new LGBT liaison

Aditi Hardikar was named the new White House liaison to the LGBT community
this week.
A White House ocial said she moved into the role of associate director of
public engagement in the White House Oce of Public Engagement, where shes
the White Houses primary liaison to the LGBT community as well as the AsianAmerican and Pacic Islander (AAPI) community.
According to the White House, she served most recently as director of the
LGBT Leadership Council at the Democratic National Committee, where she
raised moneyand mobilized community leaders around Democratic issues.

Chief names new head of gay police unit

Crawley a 24-year
veteran of force
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier last
month appointed a lieutenant who
has served in the Metropolitan Police
Department for 24 years as the new head
of the police division that oversees the
Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit.
Lt. Cheryl Crawley, who most recently
worked at the Sixth District Patrol Services
and School Security Bureau, replaces
Capt. Edward Delgado as manager of the
departments Special Liaison Division,
according to police spokesperson
Gwendolyn Crump.
Crump said Crawleys appointment
became eective on Oct. 19.
The Special Liaison Division oversees
the GLLU as well as three other special
liaison units the Latino Liaison Unit, the
Asian Liaison Unit, and the Deaf and Hard
of Hearing Liaison Unit.
Lt. Crawley has 24 years of
experience with the Metropolitan
Police Department and brings with
her great ideas and a vast knowledge
of Community Policing, said Sgt. Matt
Mahl, supervisor of the GLLU, in a Nov.
3 email introducing Crawley to a list of
local LGBT organizations, including the
D.C. Center for the LGBT Community.
Over the next several weeks, I will be
bringing her around to meet everyone so
they can put a face to the name, Mahl
said in his email. Please give her a warm
welcome.
Crawley began her new job a little over
two weeks after Lanier or one of her top
assistants transferred Delgado to a new
assignment with the departments Oce
of Unied Communications Liaison in
Southeast D.C., which oversees the 911
emergency call center.
The transfer came two months after
Delgado was accused in an internal police
complaint of allegedly harassing a gay
male ocer assigned to the GLLU by
repeatedly calling him by a female name.
Crump said the complaint was being
investigated by the departments Internal
Aairs Division. She said that under
police rules, no one, including Delgado,
could comment on the matter.
Among
Crawleys
rst
public
appearances after being named as the
new head of the Special Liaison Division
was the Washington Blades Best of Gay
D.C. awards party on Oct. 23, where she
was greeted by Mayor Vincent Gray.
Crump said that Crawleys appointment
as manager of the Special Liaison Division
doesnt change Sgt. Mahls status as
supervisor of the GLLU.

A biography released by the department

says Crawley began her police career as a
patrol ocer in the Second District before
being transferred ve years later to the
Youth Investigations Division. At that post
she served as a Youth Outreach Ocer,
an instructor for the Gang Resistance
Education and Training Program and
later as an investigator for physical and
sexual crimes against children.
After being promoted to sergeant
in 2007 she served eight years in the
Seventh District and as a Detective
Sergeant at the Youth Investigations
Division. After assuming the title of
lieutenant she served as manager of one
of the Public Service Area sections in the
Sixth District.

Marriage, trans laws secure under Hogan

Advocates downplay
concerns over GOP
governor-elect
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
LGBT rights advocates reiterated this
week said Marylands same-sex marriage
and transgender rights laws will remain
on the books once Gov.-elect Larry Hogan
takes oce in January.
Carrie Evans, executive director of
Equality Maryland, told the Washington
Blade that almost all the advances made
under Gov. Martin OMalleys administration
required action from the General Assembly
that remains under Democratic control
after the Nov. 4 election.
The governor does not have the
unilateral power to repeal these
laws, said Evans. Equality Maryland
is condent the hard-fought wins like
marriage equality and the Fairness for All
Marylanders Act are secure.
Gay state Del. Luke Clippinger
(D-Baltimore City) agreed.
There was certainly no indication that
I heard of during the campaign from the
new governor-elect that he was looking
to somehow roll back marriage or the
transgender bill, the Baltimore City
Democrat told the Blade on Monday

Maryland Gov.-elect LARRY HOGAN said this

week that he will not discuss policy plans
until after his inauguration next year.
PHOTO BY MARRH2; COURTESY OF WIKIMEDIA

during a telephone interview. Well be

sure to be vigilant against any attempt to
do anything.
Gender Rights Maryland Executive
Director Dana Beyer expressed concern
that Hogan may try to cut funding for
social programs under his budget. She
nevertheless said he would not try to
repeal the same-sex marriage or trans
rights laws.
Larry Hogan is not going to try and
repeal anything, Beyer told the Blade.

He cant do that anyway.

Hogan on Nov. 4 stunned political
observers when he defeated Lieutenant Gov.
Anthony Brown by a 52-47 percent margin.
Brown throughout the campaign
highlighted his support of marriage rights
for same-sex couples. The lieutenant
governor noted to the Blade during
multiple interviews that he testied in
support of the trans rights law that took
eect on Oct. 1.
Hogan told the Baltimore Sun ahead of
the June primary that he opposes the trans
rights law. He said during an interview on
News Talk with Bruce DePuyt in August
that his position on same-sex marriage
had evolved, noting he would not seek
to repeal Marylands gay nuptials law that
voters approved in a 2012 referendum.
Hogan during the campaign focused
almost exclusively on the states economy
and taxes in spite of Browns eorts
to portray him as an extremist on gun
control, reproductive rights and other
contentious social issues.
Gregory T. Angelo, executive director
of Log Cabin Republicans, told the Blade
on Monday that Hogans campaign
contacted him before he announced
he would not challenge the states gay
nuptials law.
Angelo was critical of those who feel
Hogan may seek to repeal the marriage
and trans rights laws.

The only reason some in the LGBT

community are concerned about
Governor-elect
Hogans
positions
on marriage rights and workplace
protections is because Democrats in
Maryland shamefully employed beyondthe-pale fear-mongering during the
campaign that laughably attempted to
paint Hogan as some sort of social-issue
extremist, Angelo told the Blade. Clearly
the voters didnt buy it.
Hogan spokesperson Erin Montgomery
declined to comment to the Blade.
Im going to be the governor for all
Marylanders, the governor-elect told
reporters during a post-election press
conference in Annapolis on Nov. 5.
Both Angelo and Clippinger told the
Blade they have not spoken with Hogan
since the election.
Ive never met him, never talked to him
and so Im going to reserve judgment,
said Clippinger. Im not going to be
somebody who presumes anything about
him until I get the change to visit with him,
talk with him a little bit.
Equality Maryland which endorsed
Browns campaign will honor OMalley
at its annual brunch that will take place
at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel in
Rockville on Nov. 16.
Evans told the Blade that her
organization has invited Hogan to attend.
We are awaiting a response, she said.

Gillespie concedes to Warner in Virginia

Former RNC chair lost by
fewer than 17,000 votes
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Former Republican National Committee
Chair Ed Gillespie on Nov. 7 formally
conceded to incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark
Warner (D-Va.) in their unexpectedly
close race.
This is obviously a hard-fought
race, Gillespie told reporters during a
Springeld press conference as NBC
Washington reported. I am proud of the
campaign we have run, and I am proud of
every minute of it.
Gillespies concession came three days
after Warner narrowly defeated the former
RNC chair by fewer than 17,000 votes.
Gillespie had been poised to seek a
recount, but he conceded during the
press conference the additional votes
were simply not there. NBC Washington
reported the former RNC chair called
Warner earlier on Friday to congratulate
him on his re-election, to thank him for

his public service to our commonwealth

and to wish him and his family well.
Earlier today, Ed Gillespie called to
inform me that he would be conceding
the election, and I commended him on

a hard-fought campaign and wish him

and his family well, said Warner in a
statement. I am sure Ed Gillespie will
continue to contribute to the debate in
Virginia and the nation.
Representing Virginia has been the
honor of my life, and I am gratied that the
people of the commonwealth have rehired
me for a new term, added Warner.
Warner told the Washington Blade last
month he feels marriage rights for samesex couples is the right thing to do.
The Democrat, who was governor
of Virginia between 2002-2006, issued
an executive order that banned
discrimination against state employees
based on their sexual orientation. Warner
and then-U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.)
in 2010 recommended that President
Obama nominate to the federal bench
U.S. District Judge Arenda L. Wright
Allen, who in February struck down
the
commonwealths
constitutional
amendment that dened marriage as
between a man and a woman.
Polls going into Election Day indicated
Warner was ahead of Gillespie by single digits.
He ended up beating the former RNC

chair by a margin of less than one percent.

There arent proper words to describe
how proud and grateful I am for the
campaign run by Ed Gillespie, said Pat
Mullins, chair of the Republican Party of
Virginia, in a statement after Gillespie
conceded to Warner. While the press and
the polls gave him no chance at all and
many scoed at him for even trying Ed
pressed on, ran his own race and came
within an eyelash of topping a giant.
Warners victory comes against the
backdrop of Democrats losing control of
the U.S. Senate and the GOP expanding
its majority in the U.S. House of
Representatives on Election Day.
State Del. Barbara Comstock (R-Fairfax
County) easily defeated Fairfax County
Supervisor John Foust in the race to
succeed retiring Congressman Frank
Wolf. David Brat, who ousted then-House
Minority Leader Eric Cantor in June, beat
his Democratic rival in Virginias 7th
Congressional District.
On Tuesday, Virginians sent an
unmistakable message both to me and
Congress as a whole: End the gridlock and
get to work, said Warner in his statement.

Texas religious freedom bill introduced

AUSTIN, Texas A Texas lawmaker on Nov. 10 introduced a bill that critics say
would allow business owners to refuse service to gay customers.
Lone Star Q reported state Sen. Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) introduced
Senate Joint Resolution 10 that proposes a state constitutional amendment
relating to a persons freedom of religion.
Government may not burden an individuals or religious organizations
freedom of religion or right to act or refuse to act in a manner motivated by a
sincerely held religious belief unless the government proves that the burden is
in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive
means of furthering that interest, reads the bill, according to Lone Star Q.
The website reported Campbell in 2013 introduced a nearly identical measure
that died in committee.

Womens college to admit trans student

BOSTON Simmons College has become the third womens college in the
U.S. to ocially admit transgender students.
The Boston Globe on Nov. 7 reported the private liberal arts college in the
Fenway section of Boston had admitted trans students for several years. The
newspaper said Simmons College President Helen Drinan last week claried the
policy in a letter to students, faculty and sta.
Traditional notions of womanhood and femaleness are being challenged, and
new laws are emerging to protect transgender individuals, she said, according
to the Boston Globe.
Drinan said the college would not require undergraduate applicants to
prove their gender identity by providing a drivers license or another form of
government-issued identication.
Its a relief to have those things written down and set in stone, Danny
Boucher, a trans man who attends Simmons College, told the Boston Globe.
Simmons is aligning itself right now on the right side of history.
Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., and Mills College in Oakland,
Calif., earlier this year announced similar changes.

Independence Hall on July 4, 1965.
The commemorations are scheduled
to begin on July 2 with a series of LGBTspecic panels at the National Museum of
American Jewish History and Congress Hall.
A screening of Gay Pioneers, a
documentary co-produced by Equality
Forum and WHYY in Philadelphia that
examines the protests, will take place
on July 3. A wreath laying ceremony
commemorating the 50th anniversary
of the rst demonstration outside
Independence Hall will take place on July
4 at a historic marker that notes the event.
The celebration will end on July 5 with a
festival in Philadelphias Center City.

Since
the
countrys
inception,
Philadelphia has been at the forefront
ghting for life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness for all Americans, said Levitz
in a press release. On July 4, 1965, the
gay community chose Philadelphia as
the site, in front of Independence Hall
and the Liberty Bell, to call attention to
the injustices against them. Fifty years
later, we are proud to celebrate their
bravery, determination and the role that
Philadelphia had in that pursuit.
Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings
are among the 40 advocates who took
part in the rst annual reminder outside
Independence Hall in 1965. That number
grew to 150 people on July 4, 1969, less
than a week after the Stonewall riots in
New Yorks Greenwich Village.
The annual reminder protests ended
in 1970 with advocates taking part in a
march from Greenwich Village to Central
Park that commemorated the rst
anniversary of Stonewall. This event was
the rst LGBT Pride march to ever take
place in the United States.
The organized LGBT civil rights
movement began at Independence
Hall and Liberty Bell, Lazin told the
Washington Blade. We have this
remarkable opportunity to honor the
gay pioneers, understand the toxic
homophobia that they faced and then
obviously celebrate what would have
been unimaginable 50 years ago for Frank
and Barbara and the other pioneers.
Equality Forum will chair the committee
that is planning the 50th anniversary of
the rst Philadelphia protest.

States continue to grapple with marriage

Judge strikes down S.C. ban;
Kansas nuptials on hold
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A federal judge struck down South
Carolinas ban on same-sex marriage on
the basis of legal precedent in the states
judicial circuit this week.
In a 26-page decision issued on
Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Richard Mark
Gergel, an Obama appointee, determined
South Carolinas ban on gay nuptials violates
same-sex couples rights to equal protection
and due process under the Fourteenth
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Gergel bases his decision on an earlier
ruling from the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court
of Appeals against the marriage ban in
Virginia, which lies in the same judicial
circuit as South Carolina.
While a party is certainly free to
argue against precedent, even very
recent precedent, the Fourth Circuit
has exhaustively addressed the issues
raised by Defendants and rmly
and
unambiguously
recognized
a
fundamental right of same-sex couples to
marry and the power of the federal courts
to address and vindicate that right,
Gergel wrote. Gergel included a one-week

Associate Justice SONIA SOTOMAYOR has placed Kansas same-sex marriages on hold.

stay as part of his decision until Nov. 20 at

noon, so same-sex couples wont be able
to marry in South Carolina until that time.
Meanwhile, U.S. Associate Justice Sonia
Sotomayor earlier in the week placed a
temporary hold on same-sex marriages

in Kansas until the full court decides

on whether to extend the stay on gay
nuptials in the state.
In a one-page order issued Monday,
Sotomayor, whos responsible for stay
requests in the Tenth Circuit, announced

a preliminary injunction against the

Kansas marriage ban is placed on hold
pending further order of the court. Had
Sotomayor not instituted the stay, samesex couples would have been able to
wed in Kansas starting Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Central Time as a result of an order by
U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree. Its
still possible for same-sex couples to wed
at that time if the Supreme Court acts
quickly to lift its stay.
The stay was put in place following a
request from Kansas Attorney General
Derek Schmidt to place on hold same-sex
marriages in the state until the Kansas
Supreme Court makes a ruling in a case
related to gay nuptials. The U.S. Tenth
Circuit Court of Appeals had denied
an earlier stay request from Schmidt,
prompting him to appeal his request to
the Supreme Court.
It remains to be seen what action the
Supreme Court will take. Following its
earlier refusal to review court rulings in
favor of same-sex marriage, the court
denied requests to extend stays on court
decisions on marriage in Alaska and Idaho.
But the court may reconsider its decision
to let same-sex marriages continue in
additional cases now that it may take
up the merits of the issue after a ruling
against same-sex marriage in four states
by the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Ros-Lehtinen backs ENDA as amendment

Republican wants bill
attached to defense
spending measure
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A Republican original co-sponsor of
the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act has come out in support of passing
the measure as an amendment to major
defense legislation.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), one
of eight House Republican co-sponsors
of ENDA, said in a statement Tuesday to
the Washington Blade that shed like the
bill to move forward either as a standalone bill or an amendment to the scal
year 2015 defense authorization bill.
It is my hope that leadership will take
up this legislation as a part of the NDAA
or as a stand-alone bill, Ros-Lehtinen
said. It is time we moved forward on this
issue so discrimination based on sexual
orientation or gender identity is no longer
tolerated in the workplace.
Ros-Lehtinen made the comments
a week after an election in which

Republicans made major gains in the

U.S. House and took control of the U.S.
Senate, making advancement of ENDA in
the subsequent Congress more dicult.
As a strong supporter of ENDA, I know
that every day this law is not in place, LGBT
individuals face the risk of being red
due to their sexual orientation or gender
identity and of having no recourse against
it, Ros-Lehtinen said. No one should be
red due to an immutable characteristic,
especially when the only thing a ring of
that nature would accomplish is to stie
growth, creativity, and innovation.
Sources close to ENDA have articulated
the idea of passing it as an amendment to
the defense authorization bill, although
no lawmaker has been reported to have
explicitly enumerated the legislation as a
vehicle for passing the LGBT anti-bias bill.
Gregory Angelo, executive director
of the Log Cabin Republicans, echoed
the sense that passing ENDA as an
amendment to the defense authorization
bill has always been an option.
Attaching ENDA to NDAA has always
been on the table as a potential option
and one that were actively exploring given
the looming lame duck, Angelo said.

In a July interview with the Washington

Blade, Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.), another
Republican ENDA co-sponsor, said he
wanted to see the legislation passed as
an amendment to a larger vehicle, but
at that time wasnt sure which legislation
would be appropriate for ENDA.
A $594 billion version of the defense
authorization bill already passed the House
in May, so passing ENDA as part of the larger
legislation would require the Democraticcontrolled Senate to attach the bill as an
amendment on the oor. Then eyes would
be on the conference committee to see if
the provision remained in place after it
hashes out compromise legislation.
Christian Berle, legislative director for
the LGBT group Freedom to Work, said he
believes Ros-Lehtinens views are along
the lines of the eight House Republicans
who co-sponsor ENDA.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is among the
best allies that LGBT Americans have
ever had in Congress, and its great that
she is publicly endorsing the strategy of
attaching LGBT workplace protections
to the defense authorization bill, Berle
said. Weve spoken with all eight House
Republican sponsors and were hearing

signicant interest in making a play to

pass LGBT workplace protections during
the lame duck session this year. It will be
interesting to see whether the Democratic
ENDA sponsors also decide to make a play
in November or December, or whether
they are letting the Republicans now take
the lead on LGBT workplace protections.
Ros-Lehtinens oce didnt respond to
a follow-up request to clarify what she
means by leadership in her remarks, the
version of ENDA to which shes referring or
what eorts shes undertaking to ensure it
passes as part of the defense bill.
Other supporters close to ENDA have
said passage of the bill as an amendment
to the defense bill is a fantasy and Senate
Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.)
wouldnt want to put his members
through a Senate vote again on ENDA if
passage in the House remains unlikely.
The Senate passed ENDA on bipartisan
basis late last year, but House Speaker John
Boehner (R-Ohio) has refused to allow the
measure to come up for a vote in his chamber
of Congress. His oce didnt immediately
respond to a request to comment on RosLehtinen call for passage of the bill as part of
the defense authorization bill.

Gay Georgetown student thwarts ricin plot

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

or RA, who Milzman conded in during

a late night visit on March 17 about his
having produced the ricin in his dorm.
Court papers led by prosecutors say
Milzman startled the RA by tossing the bag
of ricin on the oor in Lloyds dorm room.
Although friends and some of Lloyds
fellow students knew of his role in
Milzmans arrest, Lloyd went public about
his involvement in the case for the rst time
on Monday in a column published in the
Hoya, Georgetowns student newspaper.
Among other things, he told of the
emotional ordeal he went through in rst
attempting to persuade Milzman, whom
he described as a friend, to give up the
ricin and identify the person he may have
sought to use the ricin against. Instead,
Milzman retrieved the bag of powder he
claimed contained ricin and left the room,
Lloyd said in his column.
The story began that night in March,
after he left, Lloyd wrote in his Hoya
column. I called two of my closest friends
to join me in my room, told them about
what had just happened and made them
promise to stay with me until I did what
we knew we had to do.
A sentencing memorandum led by
prosecutors says Milzman responded
ambiguously by shrugging his shoulders
when Lloyd asked him during his visit to
Lloyds dorm room on March 17whether

he planned to use the ricin to harm another

student with whom the defendant once
had a romantic relationship.
A student who knows Milzman, Lloyd,
and the other student that authorities
believe Milzman might have planned
to harm or kill with the ricin told the
Washington Blade that the potential target
is a gay male student. The student who
provided this information to the Blade did
so on the condition of not being identied.
Milzmans attorney, Danny Onorato,
argued in a Nov. 3 sentencing
memorandum that his clients decision to
produce the ricin from locally purchased
chemicals was an aberration by a
bright, upstanding 19-year-old who was
struggling with depression.
Onorato pointed to statements
Milzman made to police that he
contemplated using the ricin to
commit suicide. The attorney also cited
statements by Milzmans parents and a
psychiatrist that his client has struggled
with depression since the age of 10 and
had diculty coming out as gay in his
sophomore year at Walt Whitman High
School in Bethesda, Md.
That year, Mr. Milzman revealed to
his family and friends for the rst time
that he was gay, Onorato states in his
memorandum. As Mr. Milzmans father,
Dr. David Milzman, writes in his letter to
the court, [Danny] had been tormented
and unsure of his true feelings for years

and this coming out was no easy thing

for him, the memorandum says.
Mr. Milzmans actions were the product
of a psychiatric condition major depression
which led him at rst to explore and then,
regrettably, to act upon a misguided plan
to have ricin on hand as a means for his
own potential suicide, Onorato said in his
memo, which called on the court to sentence
Milzman to one year and one day in prison,
the shortest time allowed under federal
sentencing guidelines for the oence to
which he pleaded guilty.
In a March 26 court brief calling
for Milzman to be held without bond
pending disposition of the case, Assistant
U.S. Attorney Maia L. Miller, the lead
prosecutor in the case, pointed to
Facebook messages that Milzman sent to
the person with whom he had reportedly
had a romantic relationship, saying the
messages could be interpreted as threats.
You are the worst person in the
world, the court brief quoted Milzman
as saying in his Facebook message. You
would be more useful to the world if you
were chemically dis-incorporated and the
elements that composed your body were
sold to laboratories.
The court brief further quotes Milzman
as saying, I used to feel bad for you. But
then I realized it was pointless because
you are garbage. You are scum. You have
no redeeming qualities. Am I going to say
goodbye? Only when you nally decide

to jump o Key Bridge, the court brief

quotes him as saying.
Ill be the one at the bottom, waving,
saying do a ip, the court document
quotes him as saying.
According to this and other court lings
by prosecutors, the Facebook message
prompted the student receiving them to
obtain a stay-away order against Milzman
from Georgetown University campus
police. The same court papers say Milzman
responded by obtaining his own stay-away
order against this student, whose identity
has been withheld by authorities.
Hes widely known on campus to be
gay, said the student source who asked
not to be identied in commenting on the
student denounced by Milzman.
There is evidence contradicting the
defendants purported claim of using the
ricin for suicide, Assistant U.S. Attorney
Miller said in the governments sentencing
memorandum.
Specically, when talking with his friend
[Lloyd], when the defendant would not have
a reason to give a self-serving statement,
the defendant not only denied intending
to use the ricin in a suicide attempt, but he
also simply shrugged when directly asked
whether he intended to use the ricin on a
specic person with whom the defendant
once had a romantic relationship, Miller
states in her memorandum.

Prominent anti-gay pastor dies in plane crash

Bahamian gure blasted
Pride march organizers
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A prominent anti-gay Bahamian pastor
is among the nine people who died in
a plane crash on the island of Grand
Bahama on Sunday.
The Nassau Guardian reported that
Rev. Myles Munroe, president of Bahamas
Faith Ministries International, and his
wife, Ruth Munroe, were among the
passengers on a private jet that crashed
into a crane at a shipyard as it approached
Grand Bahama International Airport in
Freeport. The newspaper said two other
pastors with Munroes organization were
also on the ight.
The Nassau Guardian reported that
Munroe, his wife and the other passengers
were traveling from Lynden Pindling
International Airport in Nassau, the
Bahamian capital, to Grand Bahama for a
leadership forum that opened on Monday.

Former U.N. Ambassador Andrew

Young is among those who are scheduled

to speak at the three-day gathering that

will go on as scheduled.
It is utterly impossible to measure the
magnitude of Dr. Munroes loss to the
Bahamas and to the world, said Prime
Minister Perry Christie in a statement
to the Nassau Guardian. He was a
towering force who earned the respect
and administration not only of Christian
adherents but of secular leaders both
here at home and around the world.
Bahamas Faith Ministries International
on its website states its mission is to
establish a multi-faceted international
center for the purpose of teachings,
training, equipping and empowering
individuals to discover, develop, deploy
and maximize the potential of their
inherent gifts and purposes.
The organization runs ministries that
operate in the Bahamas and in more than
80 countries around the world. Munroe
and his wife had just returned to the
archipelago after spending three weeks
in Africa.
Keith Rolle, host of Inspiration with
Keith, a Bahamian radio program, told

the Washington Blade on Monday during

a Skype interview from Nassau that
Munroe was one of the most recognizable
people in the country.
Rolle said Munroe worked with an entire
generation of young people who were
gang leaders in this country who became
Christians to combat violence and drugs in
the archipelago. Rolle told the Blade these
men wore camouage as they attended
church services with other congregants.
Hes done so much in that regard just
to bring people together, he said.
Munroe was a regular guest on anti-gay
televangelist Pat Robertsons 700 Club.
A member of the Bahamian LGBT
community who asked to remain
anonymous told the Blade on Monday
that Munroe also engaged in so-called
conversion therapy.
He lied consistently about the
governments position and the law
in reference to homosexuality, said
the source. He like many other
evangelists exported his brand of hate
and homophobia to the international
community and the African continent.

Dont blame election results on gay marriage

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

Organization for Marriage, nonetheless

crowed in a statement this week that
support for restricting marriage to one
man and one woman overwhelmingly
won on election night.
In red states and blue, candidates
who supported marriage as the union of
one man and one woman won election
and those who didnt were rejected by
voters, Brown said. The Republican
Party should take note that their
nominees who favored gay marriage
were opposed by NOM and they were
resoundingly defeated.
The nominees to which Brown referred
were U.S. Senate candidate in Oregon
Monica Wehby, who campaigned in
support of marriage equality in the
general election, and gay Republicans
Richard Tisei and Carl DeMaio, who both
lost their bids for Congress. Prior to the
results, anti-gay groups, including NOM,
announced they were refusing to support
these candidates and urged support for
their Democratic opponents.
But each of the Democratic candidates
in those elections were equally in
support of same-sex marriage and LGBT
rights if not stronger than their
Republican opponents. Sen. Je Merkley
(D-Ore.), who won against Wehby, is an
early supporter of marriage equality
and champion of the Employment NonDiscrimination Act in the U.S. Senate.
Seth Moulton, the Democratic opponent
who bested Tisei, supports LGBT rights,
and DeMaios opponent incumbent Rep.
Scott Peters (D-Calif.) was endorsed by
the Human Rights Campaign.
One might argue conservatives
were so disaected in those races that
they stayed home and didnt provide
the necessary support to overcome
the Republican rivals of Democratic
candidates, especially in close races like
Californias 52nd congressional district,
where DeMaio was ahead in the nal
tally and declared the loser only after the
provisional ballots were counted.
But that wouldnt explain other races
in which Republican challengers who
support marriage equality were able
to unseat Democratic opponents in
close contests. Robert Dold, a former
Republican House member who came
out for marriage equality after leaving
oce, won in his bid to unseat Rep.
Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), as did Carlos
Curbelo, a Republican supporter of
same-sex marriage who unseated Rep.
Joe Garcia (D-Fla.).
The support of marriage equality from
these Republicans means the number
of House Republicans will increase to
at least six when the 114th Congress
convenes. Dold and Curbelo will join

incumbent Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

(R-Fla.), Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.), Charlie
Dent (R-Pa.) and David Jolly (R-Fla.) in
support of gay nuptials.
Kevin Franck, a gay Democratic
activist
in
Massachusetts,
said
despite the deeply conservative
undercurrent
in
Massachusetts
politics, he saw no indications that
Republicans in his state stayed home
as opposed to voting for Tisei.
Tisei received more votes that the antimarriage equality Tea Party Republican
who ran in the Sixth District in 2010, and
redistricting has made the district more
conservative since then, Franck said.
The bottom line is this is a Democraticleaning district and Richard Tiseis path
to victory was always paved with John
Tierneys perceived political weakness.
After Seth Moulton won the primary,
Tiseis chances went downhill fast.
In the U.S. Senate, Sen. Susan Collins
(R-Maine) came out for marriage equality
after her primary and won her bid for
re-election against her Democratic
opponent Shenna Bellows.
It should be noted that Bellows was
actually ahead of Collins in terms of LGBT
issues. A former head of the American
Civil Liberties Union of Maine, Bellows
supported a federal marriage equality
bill and a comprehensive civil rights bill
without a religious exemption.
But Collins re-election means at
least four Republican U.S. senators will
support marriage in the next Congress:
Collins, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Lisa
Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Mark Kirk
(R-Ill.). Even though three incumbent
Democratic senators lost re-election, a
majority of 49 senators will be on record
in support of same-sex marriage when
the 114th Congress convenes.
Je Cook-McCormac, senior adviser
to the pro-LGBT American Unity Fund,
took an approach to the election results
that was the opposite of NOM, saying
the issue of LGBT rights has reached a
turning point within the GOP.
Not only can Republicans follow
their conscience and survive reelection,
they can appeal to a much broader
constituency and thrive with the
support of the emerging LGBT-friendly
majority within the GOP, CookMcCormac said.
Elections in which same-sex marriage
may have played a role in defeating
LGBT-supportive candidates were in
conservative states Kansas and North
Carolina, where Republican nominees
who opposed gay nuptials won by a
slim margin against candidates who
support them.
Both Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback,
a Republican who faced criticism from
within his party for a tax policy that left

his state in dire nancial straits, and

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kansas), who faced
a challenge from a strong independent
candidate Greg Orman, were facing
questionable re-election prospects.
But after the Supreme Court refused
to review a decision in favor of marriage
equality in the Tenth Circuit, opening the
door for same-sex marriage in Kansas,
both politicians reportedly drew on the
ruling in their campaigns. According to
the Associated Press, Brownback raised
the issue in an interview without being
asked about it, and Roberts sent a mailing
criticizing Orman over his belief the state
shouldnt prohibit same-sex marriage.
In the end, both Republicans pulled o
a win. Roberts ended up drubbing Orman
by taking 53 percent of the vote compared
to his 42 percent, and Brownback won
with 50 percent of the vote against
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul
Davis, who took 46 percent.
Thomas Witt, executive director of
Equality Kansas, discounted the media
report that marriage was a factor in
the Kansas races, saying he didnt see
any of the Roberts iers and the issue
didnt have any impact on the election
whatsoever in Brownbacks race.
The reality is here from this election
Paul Davis got stuck at 46 percent
sometime back in July and never moved
the needle, Witt said. That was long
before any rulings on marriage.
For the governors race, Witt said
Brownbacks win was the result of Davis
running a one-note campaign where
the Democratic candidate would talk only
about education and that wasnt enough
to get him past 46 percent.
In North Carolina, incumbent Sen. Kay
Hagan (D-N.C.), who came out in support
of marriage equality last year, was in a
tight race against Republican candidate
Thom Tillis. Throughout the race, Hagan
was shown to have a narrow, but
consistent lead in the polls.
But after the Supreme Court refused
to review a decision bringing marriage
equality, thereby enabling same-sex
marriage in North Carolina, Tillis in his
role as House speaker attempted to
defend the states ban on same-sex
marriage in court.
When the dust of the race cleared weeks
later on Election Day, Tillis narrowly won
by 49 percent, compared to 47 percent of
the votewon by Hagan.
Thomas Mills, a political analyst and
editor of PoliticsNC, nonetheless said
he doesnt think marriage played a
major factor in the Senate race, and in
fact Hagans support for gay nuptials
was necessary to give her a boostin the
progressive, research area of the state.
I always assumed that the conservative
base was coming, Mills said. They were

angry at a lot more than just the marriage

issue. They were mad at Obama, and then
they got scared about Ebola. I dont think
it was much of a driver as some people
may have thought it was.
The ideathat the advancement of samesex marriage contributed to Republican
wins in these races also doesnt square
with the results in Virginia. Although
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) was expected
to win by a larger margin, he pulled o
a narrow victory against Republican
challengerEd Gillespie by embracing the
court decision that brought gay nuptials
to the state.
And
not
supporting
same-sex
marriage was an unsuccessful strategy
for Democrats. Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.),
who opposes gay nuptials, lost his reelection bid to Republican candidate
Tom Cotton. Sen. Mary Landrieu
(D-La.) who said she personally
supports same-sex marriage, but also
her states marriage ban seems
poised fordefeat in her states run-off
election on Dec. 6 and the Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee is
canceling at least some advertising
reservations for her.
Being anti-gay also didnt help
Democrats in the House. The twoHouse
Democrats who co-sponsored a Federal
Marriage Amendment banning samesex marriage across the country wont
be returning to Congress next year. Rep.
Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) is retiring and Rep.
Nick Rahall (R-W.Va.) lost to Republican
candidate Evan Jenkins by double-digits.
According to election data analysis
fromthe Human Rights Campaign, LGBT
issues loomed small in 2014 and the
theme for the year was instead throw
the presidents buddies out _ even
though some of those buddies happened
to support marriage equality.
Taking note of exit polls showing
LGBT people, who made up 4 percent
of electorate, voted 3-1 for Democrats,
HRC made the case that candidates,
especially in purple states, cant aord
to lose support from these voters in
close elections.
Kirk Fordham, executive director of the
Denver-based Gill Action Fund, echoed
the sense that marriage wasnt a major
factor for voters, saying even with the
recent court rulings were long past the
days of 2004 when it could be used as
a wedge.
Even Republicans recognize that the
shelf life of this issue has expired when
it comes to beneting their general
elections, Fordham said. Certainly
in some parts of the country, and in
primaries, its still potent, but it just is
an issue that Republicans avoid when
it comes to appealing to the broader
general electorate.

Register of Wills, who is gay. I hope now
that the election is over, the vagaries and
generalities of the Kittleman campaign
will give way to concrete plans to address
these very real concerns. I hope that the
LGBT community and the new county
executive will have a productive working
relationship in the years ahead.

Robocalls mar Council

election in Anne Arundel
David Armstrong, 31, a gay candidate
who ran unsuccessfully for the District
5 Council seat in Anne Arundel, was a
victim of robocalls on Oct. 31. The call,
which stated it was from Marylanders for
Transgenders, a fake group, asked voters
to call his mothers house where he lives
to thank him for coming out of the closet
and his support for all transgenders
in the Fairness for All Marylanders Act
so that they can go to any bathroom of
their choice based their own confused
gender identity. The call, which was
posted to TheSeventhState website, said,
Call Patrick today and thank him for his
bravery in coming out of the closet.
Armstrongs
anti-gay
opponent,
Republican Michael Peroutka, 62, is a
radical Christian Reconstructionist and
secessionist. He has said gay people are
out to recruit your children into their
death style and that legislators passing
of marriage equality violates Gods law.
Peroutka denied any involvement in
the robocall but Armstrong has led
a complaint with the state Board of
Elections, which forwarded it to the state
prosecutors oce.

HPV jab urged for gay UK men

LONDON All men between the ages of 16-40 in Great Britain who have sex with
men will soon be oered the HPV vaccination to protect them from forms of cancer
highly associated with the HPV virus, although how and when the program will be
implemented remains a source of controversy.
The program comes under recommendation from the countrys Joint Commission on
Vaccination and Immunization, the Telegraph reports.
The vaccination, called the HPV jab, is currently oered to teen girls to protect
them against cervical cancer. Gay men are at higher risk for infection with the human
papilloma virus, which in men has been linked to cancers of the head and neck and anal
and penile cancers, the Telegraph reports.
Teen girls ages 12 and 13 have been oered the vaccine since 2008. Although the
Commission said the jab could be helpful for males, its still working on its ocial
recommendation. Giving it to all male teens, some of whom may not yet identify as gay
or bi, may not be cost eective, some health ocials said.
Others said a more proactive, urgent eort should be made.
We implore the committee to reach a decision and introduce a vaccination for all
boys, said Shirley Cramer of the Royal Society of Public Health. Vaccinating all girls and
boys is the only way forward.

WASHINGTON Double takes, hostility from strangers and health care providers
and even reports to Child Protective Services were among the experiences reported by
41 transgender men who became pregnant according to a new study from Obstretrics
and Gynecology reported by NPR.
There were plenty of insensitive comments and harsh experiences that troubled
these men, both in and out of the health care setting, ranging from inappropriate use of
pronouns to actually turning them away and denying prenatal care, NPR reports.
They just feel a lot of isolation from the health care community, said Dr. Jennifer
Kerns, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at
the University of California, San Francisco and the senior author. And we have some
indication from our qualitative results that depression might be exacerbated for folks
who are transgender, both during pregnancy and after.
The study came about because a medical student working with Kerns, Alexis Light,
found herself elding questions from transgender male friends about whether theyd
be able to conceive and what pregnancy would be like.
Light, now a rst-year resident in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington Hospital
Center in D.C., didnt know the answer and couldnt nd it in the medical literature. So
she asked Kerns to help her design a research project to nd out. Kerns recognized it
as a cutting-edge subject, with a recent opinion paper from the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists highlighting the need for high-quality health care for
transgender individuals, NPR reports.
With such a small survey, its impossible draw rm conclusions; Kerns and Light both
said more research is needed. But one thing they did learn was that prior testosterone
use didnt seem to aect pregnancy outcome. Some transgender men use testosterone
to look and sound more masculine.

Trans men who conceive report hostility

CHICAGO A new report nds that bisexuals face more discrimination and are more
heavily aected by poverty, violence and health issues than their straight, gay or lesbian
counterparts, the Windy City Times reports.
Octobers Understanding Issues Facing Bisexual Americans, from the Movement
Advancement Project, BiNet USA and the Bisexual Resource Center, utilized academic
and medical studies to form its conclusions and suggestions for the bi community,
which it said is more than half of the 9 million LGBT people in the U.S., the Times
article notes.
Despite comprising the largest population within the LGBT community, bisexual
people are among the most invisible, said Ineke Mushovic, executive director of the
Movement Advancement Project. The failure to account for bisexual lives and experiences
compounds a lack of social support and keeps bisexual people in the closet.
The report notes one reason bisexuals may face higher rates of poverty,
unemployment, negative health outcomes and violence is because bisexual people face
discrimination from within the LGBT community as well as from non-LGBT people.
Mental health issues were among those addressed in the report, which cited other
studies nding bi men are more than four times, or in another report, perhaps as high
as six times, more likely to attempt suicide than straight men.
Another report found that bi teens who consider suicide still struggle with suicidal
thoughts into adulthood unlike many straight peers, the Times article said.

Mitigating measures
Squats are a great way to
combat added calories

GERARD BURLEY is a D.C.-based personal trainer. Reach him via @CoachGFit or

coachg@coachgtness.com.

Its ocially fall now and the cooler

weather always nds me eating more
than I ever did during the summer. I
dont know what it is, but with the cool
mornings and chilly nights comes my
appetite for hearty meals that stick to my
ribs (hello carbs!).
Luckily, I have a few tness tricks up my
sleeves that allow me to eat a little more,
but maintain my body by blasting those
extra calories. My biggest secret weapon
to vaporize those extra fall calories is to
drop it like its hot and increase my squat.
Here are three of my favorite squat
variations that blast the most calories and
will have you considering tighter jeans for
casual Fridays this fall.
Sumo squat: If anyone knows how to
maintain strong legs, its our ancient warrior
brothers the sumo wrestlers. Despite
their large frames, their normal workouts
actually burn 1,500 or more calories in
an hour. Yes, part of this is because they
weigh more than 300 pounds, but this is
also because of their most famous widelegged squat variations.
To perform the sumo squat, step your
feet to a wide stance two times shoulder
width, turn toes out slightly and pick up
one heavy dumbbell. Hold the dumbbell
vertically by the top weight with both
hands and hold it at the centerline of
the body. Start to bend at the knees
while shifting the hips backward until the
thighs are parallel to the ground. Hold
this bottom position for one second,
then explode up to return to the starting
position. Thats one complete rep. Do this
for 15 repetitions or until your legs fall o.
Bulgarian squat: The Bulgarian squat
is one of my favorites for murdering my
lower body and getting my heart rate up.
This exercise requires just as much energy

to stay balanced in the proper position as

it does to actually move, which is where
the extreme calorie burn comes from.
To perform the Bulgarian squat, rst
you will need a sturdy bench or chair that
you can elevate one leg in. The higher
the chair or bench, the more challenging
this exercise will be. Stand facing away
from the chair or bench and place the
shoelaces side of one foot up on the
chair or bench. Next hop your front foot
forward so that you are about two times
your normal step length.
This is the time to gain your balance
before starting the exercise. Once you
have gained your balance, begin to
drop your back knee down toward the
ground until your front thigh is parallel
to the ground, then return to the starting
position. In this exercises we are focusing
on slow-controlled motion, so count three
seconds down and three seconds up.
We are doing this one for 20 repetitions
per leg. I suggest you start this exercise
with just body weight, but as you feel
more comfortable with your balance and
strength, add dumbbells to hold at your
side to intensify the workout.
Prisoner squat jump: Ever wonder
why it seems that prisoners bodies are
so ripped? Its because theyre constantly
doing squat jumps. Prisoner squat jumps
are explosive, muscle building and huge
calorie burners, so obviously I love them.
To perform these rst, place both hands
behind your head like its your rst day of
intake at central booking. Next, quickly drop
down to a squat by bending at the knees
and shifting your hips backward until thighs
are parallel to the ground. At this point,
explosively thrust up and jump o the
ground as high as possible. While returning
back to the ground bend your knees and land
softly into the next squat to repeat the jump.
Continue these jumps for one full minute.
If you have any knee issues, complete this
exercise with quick squats but do not leave
the ground to keep this low impact.
Squatting has been proven to use
so many muscle combinations that it
forces the body to burn lots of calories to
complete them. The key to successfully
seeing results from squats is using dierent
variations to keep the body constantly
guessing. Incorporate this circuit into your
normal workout routine and you will avoid
that awful fall 15. Remember, six packs are
not just for summer.

Transforming D.C. into

the greatest place to
live, work and play

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

Some wonder how we can have a new

start in D.C. when some of the same old
names keep cropping up associated with
the new mayor. But I would advise them
to focus not on the people in secondary
positions but rather on where our new
mayor will lead them.
Many underestimated the resolve and
ability of Muriel Bowser to make her mark
on this great city of ours. We are a small
city with fewer than 650,000 people. So
yes, some of the same people will continue to be part of the power structure
no matter who is mayor. The list of developers who want to build in the District
doesnt automatically change and the

community activists who work to make a

dierence dont suddenly go away when
there is a new administration. The small
business interests and tenant activists
are all still here and demand to be heard.
The powerful lawyers and their clients remain and want to be heard.
In New York when I worked as coordinator of local government for the Mayors
Oce in the Beame administration there
were eight million people to choose from
when forming a new administration yet
we still saw some of the same people
with interests in the city stay around
from one administration to the next. That
isnt always a bad thing and we are lucky
that both Police Chief Cathy Lanier and
Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson will
be staying in their positions.
Judging the changes the Bowser administration makes will only become fully evident when we see how the mayor deals
with the entrenched interests and the direction she gives to those who make up
the highest levels of her government.
I believe that Bowser will look at previous administrations and take the best
from of all of them as she fashions her
mayoralty. She knows the mistakes made
by Sharon Pratt Kelly and Adrian Fenty
and wont repeat them. She understands
the successes of the Fenty administration

EDITORIAL CARTOON

and those that came about and resulted

in transforming this city in the Williams
administration and she will look to emulate the best of those. She has already
said that she will look to build on the
positive things the Gray administration
accomplished and focus on the changes
that need to be made.
Whats apparent from the outset is that
she will focus on the people and areas of
the city that havent been a part of the
economic boom. She is open to looking
for new faces to populate her administration and nding the best possible people
to move her ideas forward. I know from
conversations with her over the years
that she cares about what people think
about her and intends to make a lasting
and positive mark on this city.
Adding to the climate of change is that
the new mayor will take oce along with
three brand new Council members and a
fourth that will be elected to ll her seat in
a special election. Three others will have
served for less than four years. That is a tremendous change and all those new Council
members will be looking to both work with
her and make a mark of their own. That
bodes well for the people of the District.
With the newly elected Republican
Congress we may be in for a few dicult
years if the federal government continues to eliminate jobs and government
contracting. The District and surrounding
jurisdictions often feel the brunt of that.
One thing in our favor is that Mayor Gray
stayed focused on rebuilding a healthy
reserve fund.
Mayor Bowser will have to balance
her budget while at the same time deal
with constituents competing for more.
She must maintain our high bond ratings
while satisfying advocates for education,
job training, extending TANF and aordable housing as they all make increased
demands on the budget.
One of the strongest points in Bowsers
platform was the focus on public-private
partnerships in a host of areas including
everything from aordable housing to the
arts. We have a strong business sector as
well as strong healthcare and hospitality
sectors and we need to capitalize on that.
We also have a strong and growing higher
education sector with more than 80,000
students attending school in the District
and involving them in the development
of new initiatives will be important for the
future of the District. There is a wealth of
brainpower there to be tapped and the
potential of thousands of new tax-paying
residents for the District.
I look forward to the Bowser administration and to the potential it has to continue to transform the District into the
greatest place in the world to live, work
and recreate.

VIEWPOINT

Charles Blow is the James Baldwin of our time

NY Times writer delivers
searing memoir on
poverty, sexuality

KATHI WOLFE is a writer, poet and regular

contributor to the Blade. She can be reached
through this publication.

Every so often, a book comes along that hits

your solar plexus so hard that it becomes a
part of your DNA. Thats how its been for me
since I read Fire Shut Up in My Bones, the
bestselling memoir by New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow.
In this searing, indescribably moving
work, Blow writes of being a child and coming of age in rural, dirt-poor Louisiana. Im
not being metaphorical here. Blow, who is
black, and his brothers lived in such poverty
that, sometimes, they literally ate clay out of

a ditch. In writing that is strikingly original,

yet evocative of James Baldwin and Maya
Angelou, Blow holds the reader spellbound
with his stories. You hold onto his every
word as he tells of his journey from his boyhood in Gibsland, La., where he attended
schools still segregated 16 years after Brown
v. Board of Education, to an Atlanta journalism jobs fair where he found employment
with the New York Times in his 20s. Along
the way, he struggles with the trauma of sexual abuse (at age 7, he was sexually abused
by a male older cousin), his sexuality, and
with societal ideas of masculinity.
From the moment I read the memoirs
opening sentences, Tears owed out of me
from a walled-o place, from another time,
from a little boy who couldnt cry, I couldnt
put Fire Shut Up in My Bones down.
When I was 10, I remember my Dad, a Jewish veterinarian in a small South Jersey town,
telling me how hed stayed up all night, glued
to the page, reading James Baldwin. Everybody should listen to him, he said, hes saying
what needs to be said whether people want to
hear it or not.
Blow is the James Baldwin of our time.
Using his gifts as a storyteller, he writes of

poverty, race, bullying, gender and sexuality

the issues, struggles and process of selfdiscovery of our era. From an early age, Blow
felt that he was dierent. Though he liked
girls, Blow sometimes felt attracted to male
images. As a youth, he was called punk, a
local anti-gay slur. His mother worried that
Blow didnt run as a boy should run. One of
his older cousins is tied to a bed, beaten and
murdered because he dares to be openly
gay. This hate crime against a black man,
unlike Matthew Shepards murder, didnt receive media attention.
Black bodies ... were not valued by society
as much as others, Blow told me in an interview when asked about growing up with racism and societys stiing denition of masculinity. On top of being black, being poor and
from a rural situation ... amplied the devaluation. Being dierent, not part of heterosexual
normality ... you had to be alert.
We wouldnt want to pretend that theres
been no improvement since the pre-Civil
Rights era, Blow said, but that said, there is
still disenfranchisement, mass incarceration,
inequities in terms of poverty and treatment
by the criminal justice system.
If you look at the sociological data, he

added, this dierence in treatment ranges

all the way from preschool through adulthood. In terms of worse treatment for black
and brown people in particular black and
brown men, he said.
Because a childs mind isnt completely
formed, and because a kid is pre-sexual before he or she is sexually abused, Blow said,
you can understand how they can bring together ideas of abuse and attraction.
The anti-gay forces would like for there to
be an environmental cause of being gay because then there could be an environmental
cure, he said.
The better way to think about it, Blow said,
is that children who will likely identify as different later in life may be more prone to be
victims of sexual abuse.
Often, weve been too rigid when we talk
about sexual identity. Human beings are sexual beings, said Blow, who identies as bisexual. Sexuality expresses itself in myriad ways.
These ways are not hierarchical but part of a
spectrum. Some people are xed at ... points
along the spectrum and some are uid.
Wherever you are on this spectrum, check
out Blows memoir. Its re will burn through
your bones.

Low-vote victors should prompt D.C. election reform

New Council At-Large
member wins only a tiny
fraction of votes

MARK LEE is a long-time entrepreneur

and community business advocate. Follow

OurBusinessMatters@gmail.com.

While a historic tidal wave of Republican

wins for both U.S. Senate and House seats
as well as gubernatorial and legislative
contests in red, blue and purple states occurred last week, D.C. was setting a record
of its own.
With the election of two At-Large D.C.
Council members by a distinct minority of
voters, a majority of the 13 oceholders
were rst elected, and even re-elected, the
same way. At least nine current Council or
Council-elect members have won with far
less than a majority in either general or
special elections in crowded At-Large or

Ward races.
These same politicians have failed to reform local election procedures.
Lets examine the facts.
In this months election of dual At-Large
D.C. Council seats, both Democratic incumbent Anita Bonds and newly elected Elissa
Silverman won only 24 and 12 percent of
the vote, respectively. These preliminary results include early voting and Election Day
totals as released by the D.C. Board of Elections and factor in the number of undervotes by those selecting fewer than two allowed ballot choices. Later this week a nal
report including absentee and provisional
ballots will be issued.
Silverman actually nished third in the
crowded 15-candidate eld trailing nearly
two-to-one the number of votes not cast in
the race.
Even eliminating them primarily generated by those bullet-voting for a single
candidate as election ocials will do in
the nal report, the numbers dont change
much. Counting only actual votes cast,
Bonds won almost 31 percent, with nearly
72,000 votes and matching the percentage
she won when rst elected in a 2012 special election. Silverman, however, won only
16 percent, with slightly more than 36,000
votes from 150,000 voters.

Running this time as an independent

in order to qualify for one of two At-Large
seats reserved by the Home Rule Charter
for non-majority party candidates, Silverman was defeated last year as a Democrat
in a special election for an open At-Large
position created by Phil Mendelsons special election ascension to Council Chair.
Mendelson himself was rst elected in
1998 with slightly more than one-third of
the votes cast.
The other two At-Large D.C. Council
members also won their seats with a minority of votes. Democrat Vincent Orange
won a special election in 2011 with 29
percent of the vote, winning re-election in
2012 with 38 percent alongside Democratturned-independent David Grosso, who
won only 20 percent of the vote.
Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser rst won
a special election for her current Ward 4
seat in 2007 with 40 percent, while Ward 7
Council member Yvette Alexander was rst
elected with 34 percent. Kenyan McDue
won his initial race to represent Ward 5 in a
2012 special election with 44 percent.
The power of incumbency and one-party
dominance results in Ward representatives
almost always re-elected by a large majority unlike At-Large members competing
with third-party candidates and an increas-

ing number of pseudo-independents battling for set-aside minority spots.

Fixing this preponderance of low-vote
victories is simple. Approved by California voters and implemented in 2012,
similar to other jurisdictions, a Top
Two primary in which all candidates
compete and all voters participate is the
best approach. Noting candidate party
aliation, if any, the two garnering the
greatest number of votes proceed to the
general election unless one candidate
receives an outright majority.
No less a partisan stalwart than New
York Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer
has called for nationwide adoption of the
system. Other approaches, such as ranked
voting, are complex and transform voting
into casino-style endeavors.
Adoption would also eliminate minority-vote party primary wins often
tantamount to election in a city where
three-fourths of registered voters are
Democrats. Most important, it would allow full and fair participation in the entire
election process by non-party-aliated
independent voters, representing up to
one-fourth in parts of D.C. likely reversing increasingly dismal turnout.
Otherwise, D.C. will continue to be represented by those elected by only a few.

Longtime out rocker on

label change, new music
and industry sexism
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
On a rare night home in Los Angeles
just a week into her fall tour, long-time
out rocker Melissa Etheridge caught up
with Washington Blade by phone. Her
current This is M.E. Tour, which kicked
o Nov. 2 in Mashantucket, Conn., comes
to Washington next week.
Touring behind her Sept. 30 album of
the same name, Etheridge, on the eve
of a Sunday night performance at the
National Radio Hall of Fame Induction
Ceremony, was candid on a wide spate of
topics. Her comments have been slightly
edited for length.
WASHINGTON BLADE: The new album
feels very textured more loops, some
big, crunchy sounds. Is it hard to discern
how far to go with that in the studio?
MELISSA ETHERIDGE: No. I have a rule
with all the producers. I tell them right
up front, I say, Look, Im a live artist, so I
need to be able to do whatever they hear
on the record live. Now, not every little
huge 10-guitar part or something but my
voice, the song, the beat, they have to be
able to enjoy that live and I have to be
able to do it.
BLADE: I loved the vintage footage in
the new video for Take My Number.
Was that your idea?
ETHERIDGE: That was mine and the
director, Dale. When I was making this
record, I had just gone through about six
months of thinking I was going to put out
a box set of old stu that no one had ever
seen or heard, so I went into my attic
actually a storage space like we all have
out here in California and started going
through boxes and nding all these old
pictures and things. I wanted to share
some of that with my fans and I wanted
them to have the feeling I had looking at it
of, Oh my God, it really has been 30 years

since Ive been doing it here in California,

wow. It t because theres also a lot of
reminiscing in the song.
BLADE: So is the box set on ice for now?
ETHERIDGE: Yes. ... Sometime I will
present it when Im not looking at it as a
way to make money but just as a thing
that I can release to people and share.
BLADE: You said in one recent interview
that you atlined after the last album, 4th
Street Feeling (2012). What did you mean?
ETHERIDGE: Well, I had done two or
three or four tours in a row where I kind
of played to the same number of people.
They were wonderful shows and there
are people, whether Im on the radio
station or not, there are people who if
you put a show for sale in a certain town,
those people are going to come see me
because they have a great time. Those
are my fans that I love and I couldnt be
me without them. But I also think theres
a lot of people out there in the world who,
if given the chance, Id like to think would
also enjoy the music and I felt I wasnt
reaching those people. I didnt want to be
comfortable. I wanted to challenge myself
and see if I could reach more people and
see if I could get more people interested
in this crazy thing called rock n roll.
BLADE: It irks the shit out of me in
Rolling Stone when they review albums
by women rockers and even when its a
fairly positive review overall, theyll get in
these little digs and say stu like, shes
better when she reins in her over-thetop tendencies. They never say shit like
that about Springsteen or Steven Tyler
(Aerosmith) or the male rockers. Are you
kidding me? Rein it in? Its fucking rock
n roll. They can only stomach women
rockers if they keep it safe and rein it in.
Do you feel its sexist?
ETHERIDGE: You know Joey, sometimes
I think you are the little devil on my
shoulder. You know, like theres an angel
over here and a devil over here because
its like you know the little funny things in
my life that are kind of buttons for me.
You have that sense of justice that I have
that sometimes gets me in trouble like we

MELISSA ETHERIDGE combined a rootsy yet tech-savvy approach to her rst independent
album I am M.E. Its her 13th studio album.

did last time (comments Etheridge made

in a 2013 Blade interview about Angelina
Jolie went viral). But I made an oath to
myself a long time ago, like 20 years ago,
that I would always answer truthfully
what was asked of me. I answered
truthfully and I do not regret that at all. It
opened up some amazing conversations,
not just with me but across the nation,
so its all good. But yes, back to Rolling
Stone. My wife so gently just sort of, you
know, pats me on the head and says, Oh
honey, dont let because, yeah, I think
those things. Why do they call it histrionic

on me yet Im singing the exact same type

of thing Steven Tyler sings and you said it
exactly. My rock heroes were people like
Robert Plant, and he was up there singing
like Janis Joplin who stood up there and
sang like a black woman. Its soul. And I
mean Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Steven
Tyler presents like the male androgyny
yet when I showed up on this end of
androgyny it was like, Whoa, wait a
minute, theres something uncomfortable
about it and its taken them a long time.

QUEERY: 20 QUESTIONS FOR MARVIN BOWSER

MARVIN BOWSER
How long have you been out and who was
the hardest person to tell?
Ive been out for 34 years. The hardest
person to tell? Me. It was hardest to admit it
to myself. It wasnt in my plan. I discovered
strength from resolving my internal conict
and went on with my life revising my plan
accordingly.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Bayard Rustin. Openly gay, black civil rights
leader who worked closely with Dr. Martin
Luther King.

Marvin Bowser worked hard to help his sister become Washingtons next
mayor. After it became clear Muriel Bowser had successfully fended o David
Catania and Carol Schwartz last week, Bowser says it was pretty incredible.
It was really exhilarating and a relief at the same time, the 53-year-old
Washington native says. We ran a good campaign and we immediately
started transition. You work hard, you got it, now its time to run with it and
thats what were doing.
Marvin and Muriel are two of ve siblings. Shes the youngest; hes in the
middle. Hes worked as a systems engineer with Mission Systems, a defense
contractor, for about 15 years.
Except for a four-year stint in the 1980s in Germany, Bowser has lived his
entire life in Washington. He and partner Mike Yates have been together for
10 years.
Bowser lives in Hillcrest and enjoys rowing, gardening, his koi pond and
making stained glass in his free time.

Whats Washingtons best

nightspot, past or present?
Back in my coming out days, the Frat
House, more recently known as Omega.

Describe your dream wedding.

Intimate. Family and friends.

What non-LGBT issue are

ou most passionate about?
A path to the middle class for the less
fortunate in our city. We have a lot of work to
do to address education, aordable housing
and homelessness issues.
What historical outcome
would you change?
The American people should have been
told the truth about Iraq before invading it. To
remove a dictator, replace him with a stable
government and grow the economy requires
a 50-year stay. Consider Japan and Germany
after WWII. Shock and awe alone does not
bring about stability.

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
Beyonce concluded her I Am... World
Tour in Trinidad. We were in Trinidad for
Carnival. They built an incredible stage
and outdoor venue on the Queens Park
Savannah two blocks from our hotel. That
night, an international crowd of thousands
enjoyed an incredible concert under the
stars. It was memorable to see so many
people relate to Beyonce who is truly an
international star.
On what do you insist?
Meeting my obligations. Also respect,
honesty, trust, loyalty, selessness and a
strong sense of community.

What was your last

Facebook post or Tweet?

with Muriel Bowser at One Judiciary
Square.
If your life were a book,
what would the title be?
Did I Say That Out Loud?
If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
Nothing. I wouldnt change who I am.

What do you believe in

beyond the physical world?
God and the afterlife.

Whats your advice for

LGBT movement leaders?
Lets make building coalitions with white,
black, Asian, Native American and Latino
LGBTA organizations a priority. Theres
strength in numbers.

What would you walk

across hot coals for?
My family

What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?

That gay guys dont know how to use
power tools or x things around the house.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Paris is Burning

Whats the most overrated social custom?

I cant think of one that is overrated. The
most ignored social custom is RSVP. People
just dont do it anymore, but will show up at
events hungry and thirsty.

What trophy or prize do you most covet?

An Olympic medal. I came close this
August by winning a silver medal at the Gay
Games in rowing at a young 53 years old!

What do you wish youd known at 18?

I wish Id known more about real estate
and real estate nancing.

Why Washington?
I was born here. Both my mother and
fathers families are here. I have traveled
extensively and have lived abroad. No matter
how good a time Ive had traveling, I am
always excited to return home.

D.C. premiere contrasts

contemporary baby
drama with 1860s
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
In-yer-face theatre is the name
for the raw, no-holds-barred dramatic
movement that emerged in 1990s Britain.
Out English playwright Mark Ravenhill
is one of the schools foremost members,
and his black comedy Handbag,
currently making its D.C. area premiere at
Scena, is a prime example of the genre.
In Handbag, two gay couples are having
a baby. Maternal Mauretta (Anne Nottage),
the birth mother, and her humorless
partner Suzanne (Amanda Forstrom), are
slated to serve as the babys custodial
parents. But sensitive Tom (Edward C.
Nagel) and his puerile partner David (Gray
West) will be in the childs life too as his
two daddies. Seems like a perfect plan a
surplus of love and support.
But as the day of delivery draws
nearer, things become less rosy. David
announces that hed like the quartets
issue to call him Uncle David rather than
daddy. Additionally, both David and
Suzannes eyes begin to rove. In fact,
when Mauretta goes into labor, Suzanne
is nuzzling Lorraine (Haely Jardas), a
confused, undereducated young woman
shes lming for her focus group, and
David is having sex with Phil (Bob Sheire),
a heroin-addicted rent boy.
Set in London, the action shifts back and
forth from the late 1990s to the 1860s.
The more modern England feels familiar
and reality based, but for the earlier
years, Ravenhill serves up a wild prequel
to Oscar Wildes The Importance of Being
Earnest, from which the playwright drew
his title. In Wildes comic masterpiece,
nanny and wannabe novelist Miss Prism
mistakenly loses her young charge,

accidentally leaving him in a handbag in

the cloakroom at Victoria Station.
Ravenhills Victorian vignettes here
played broadly with lots of eye rolling and
screeching convey a world of manners
where a baby isnt particularly valued.
Wildes Constance (Forstrom again) is
portrayed as distinctly not maternal.
And here Cardew is played by Nagel as
a mincing do-gooder who heads up a
home for wayward boys whom he likes to
bathe. And its Phil, the rent boy in search
of family and love whose world collides
with the past. After shooting up a bag of
heroin, he oats into Victorian London
where he gladly accepts the salutary
ministrations from a besotted Cardew, at
least for a while.
Director Robert McNamara doesnt
shy away from Handbags over-the-top
humor or harsher in-yer-face moments.
He goes after them wholeheartedly. And
while the cast of ve do double duty in
both centuries, they fare better with the
more contemporary storyline. Sheire is
a standout as the damaged Phil. He nails
his role. Similarly Jardas nicely captures
the vulnerability and anger of Lorraine.
Scenes involving either misdirected youth
are the plays most compelling.
Daniel Pinhas set is simple but eective:
In the center Playhouses intimate black
box space a chandelier hangs over a large
red circle. Sound designer Denise R. Rose
cleverly blasts the din of a crowd to create
a busy railway station.
Handbag
entertainingly
and
sometimes jarringly explores the timeless
search for love, acceptance and meaning
in whats often an unwelcoming world.

Singer/songwriter CRYSTAL BOWERSOX says the national exposure of a hit reality show can be
a double-edged sword.

Idol nalist prizes

authenticity, tenacity
By MARIAH COOPER
Crystal Bowersox was introduced to
millions of people on television when
she competed in American Idols ninth
season. But viewers may remember more
of the experience than she does.
When Bowersox auditioned for the
show performing Piece of My Heart by
Janis Joplin, it was clear she would be a top
contender. The judges were baed that
she brought her guitar in for her audition.
Unlike now, contestants were not allowed
to perform with a guitar. Bowersox
replied that it was like a comfort blanket
for her. She went on to be a runner-up to
Lee DeWyze for the season.
Honestly the whole Idol thing was
a blur, Bowersox, who plays Baltimore
Sound Stage on Tuesday, says. When I try
to recall a moment of my own experience
its hard for me to do that because it was
such a high stress environment.
Her strategy in the competition was
to achieve an intimate feeling to her
performances.
I had a game plan in my mind to
perform for the people who were there
in the live viewing audience rather than
concern myself with 30 million people
watching through the cameras, she says.
I think thats really what kept me sane.
Its a strategy that worked. While
Bowersox, originally from Elliston, Ohio,
was stressing out during the season,
America was loving her soulful voice. She
was the third Idol runner-up never in the
bottom three or two, behind fellow Idol
alums Clay Aiken and David Archuleta.
After the success on the show,
Bowersox went on to release two albums
Farmers Daughter in 2010 and All That
for This in 2013. This summer, she selfreleased an EP called Promises with her
song How Long that explores the fame
and success that comes along with being

on a show like American Idol.

There is a downside. How Long is
about exactly that. How long will the love
be here? They love you when youre up
and kick you when youre down.
Some Idol contestants have noticeably
dropped from the public eye after the
ending of the show like fth season
winner, Taylor Hicks. Its something
Bowersox, 29, believes has less to do with
the artist and more with the listener.
Folks just assume that people who
grace that stage disappear but they dont
disappear. Its just a matter of people
having very short attention spans and
people dont seek out what theyre
interested in, Bowersox says.
Her success also allowed her to bring light
to issues she felt were important. In 2013,
Bowersox came out as bisexual through her
Christmas song, Coming Out for Christmas.
She had previously been married to a man
and had one child. Yet coming out was worth
doing for her after she started questioning
her sexuality in high school.
Hearing from people who I was close to
that it was not OK to love someone of the
same gender was a struggle, she says. You
start this cycle of self-loathing and thinking
there is something wrong with me.
She thinks those feelings are ones that
many other people can relate to and
thats why she wanted to share her own
experience.
I think that the more people in the public
eye who come out and are honest about
themselves gives kids in the middle of
nowhere who are struggling the condence
to really love themselves no matter what.
You are not awed. You are human and its
important to let your love light shine.

Trues are expensive but have the ability to add one-of-a-kind avor to many kinds of dishes.

Theyre expensive,

By KRISTEN HARTKE
The thing about trues is that not that
many Americans actually ever eat them, or
honestly even know what they are, but were
supposed to know that they are amazing.
Turn on any cooking show on the Food
Network and youll eventually hear a chef
waxing poetic about these knobby little
darlings, but still not have any idea what
they taste like.
Chef Todd Gray of Equinox, a restaurant
now in its second decade just a stones
throw from the White House, loves trues
and is happy to showcase them at his
restaurant during true season, which
lasts from October through January. A
true is basically a type of fungus that
grows at the base of trees, often unearthed
by dogs or pigs that are specially trained
to root them out. The white true is most
commonly found in the Piedmont region
of Italy, although there is an American
variety found in Oregon.
The cost? Around $1,500 to $1,700 a
pound, says Chef Gray. We currently
source our trues from Alba, Italy but
have procured domestically as well. They
are denitely in short supply it always
depends on the harvest. We have a
vendor that we have been working with
for over 20 years so he always takes care
of us its denitely a relationship thing
to get the best trues and pricing.
To put it into context, a pound of
trues is a lot of trues. A somewhat
standard true, about the size of a small
potato, would cost more in the range of
$150 to $200, and, used carefully, could
be added to many dishes. Chef Gray calls
the avor earthy and deeply woodsy
with a slightly pungent raw garlic nasal
sensation. Its a avor that complements
eggs really well, according to the chef,
as well as fettuccine with butter: Those
ingredients allow the true avor of the
true to come through.

While Gray uses trues across his menu

with everything from beef carpaccio to
macaroni and cheese, hes also showcasing
this tasty fungus in a special way at Equinox
during true season with the White True
Vegan Brunch, which may scare omnivores,
but shouldnt. The rich avor of trues is a
perfect pairing with vegetable-based dishes
and Equinox is going beyond the standard
bacon-and-eggs brunch with a trued
pumpkin soup with spiced pecans, a lentil
cassoulet with slow-cooked golden beets
and caramelized Brussels sprouts and a
spiced Bartlett pear stued French toast.
The assorted sweets are served with a white
true crme anglaise that is so creamy and
decadent, youll never know its dairy free.
If youre looking for a cost-eective way
to add white trues to your own cooking,
you can try using white true oil to add
that earthy undertone to soups and egg
dishes; just be careful not to overdo it,
as a few drops added just before serving
is all it takes there is such a thing as
too much true. White true powder is
another option: a small amount can be
kneaded into pasta dough, incorporated
into a compound butter or mixed into
mashed potatoes or polenta. Avoid using
trues with citrus-based or acidic dishes,
as the avors will just ght against each
other and the true will ultimately be the
loser. Once you start playing with trues,
its hard not to get hooked on trying out
new ways to highlight a new avor prole.
If you want to impress your Thanksgiving
guests, Gray suggests that the earthy
avor ts in well at the holiday table.
Thanksgiving trues would be
amazing with chestnut stung or white
bean soup, or apple pie with white true
ice cream just make sure they arent
served with cranberries.

Equinox is located at 818 Connecticut Ave.,

N.W.: equinoxrestaurant.com. Chef Todd Grays
Market Vegan Brunch is served every Sunday,
$30 per person, but add $20 if youd like freshly
shaved trues on your dishes as well.

Her brothers said that pink and

laughed when Jazz talked about girl
thoughts. Their parents made Jazz wear
boy clothes (ugh!) until they saw a new

transgender and since Jazzs parents love
Jazz no matter what, they decided to let
her be herself, to wear pretty pink clothes

and play with the toys she liked.

That wasnt an easy thing for others to
accept at rst, but its getting better. Some
people are understanding, while some
kids still tease Jazz and call her names.

REALESTATE

A time to buy, a time to sell

Pay attention to seasonal uctuations in market
By TED SMITH
Is it a good time to buy real estate? Should I sell now while the market is hot?
These are questions that Realtors often hear, much like the doctors friends who ask
her about a pain in their leg. When I was in real estate school, our instructors told us
that the answer to both questions should be the same: Its ALWAYS a good time to buy
or sell real estate!
Maybe so, but there are denite seasonal uctuations in the real estate market that will
benet sellers in some seasons and buyers in other seasons. Lets consider the chart below,

which in part represents data for the number of homes sold in the District and the median
sold prices over a seven-year period from 2008-2014. The chart shows that more homes
sell for a higher median price during the spring and then again during the fall (but not as
many and not for as high a median). In contrast, fewer homes sell during the dead of winter
and the summer doldrums, and they sell for lower median prices in those seasons.
Who benets in the spring and fall markets? Primarily sellers, when their properties
command higher prices due to the increased number of buyers looking for homes during nicer weather and before the school year starts. In contrast, buyers will benet in
summer and winter, when there are fewer buyers looking for homes, making sellers
more willing to discount their asking prices. Think of it as an inversion of the law of
supply and demand: When the supply is high, the demand is high. More homes sell for

Steve Weinberg
ATTORNEY AT LAW

higher prices when the number of available homes is higher. (Its important to remember that the trend line for active listings data above will be at least a month ahead of
that for closed sales, since sales contracts typically take 30-45 days to close.)
So where do we stand right now? The chart at the end of this article breaks down the
average data above and shows the median sold price per month for each of the seven
years considered. A couple of conclusions to draw from this chart:
Median sold prices have been rising since 2009.
2014 has had the highest median sold prices on a month-by-month basis (except for
June of 2013) for the past 7 years represented (and, in fact, since 2004).
Median sold prices rose in October rose as expected after lower sold prices in August and September.
So, whats the answer to the opening questions? If youre a buyer, its a great time to
enter the real estate market and should be a great time to nd some relative bargains
over the next four months. If youre a seller wanting to get the highest price for your
property, you should probably wait until spring to put your place on the market after, of course, using the winter to de-clutter and spruce up your place to make its best
impression when the spring season starts. Happy hunting!
