[slide] MIRRORING

Knowing reality means constructing systems of transformations that correspond, more or less
adequately, to reality."- Jean Piaget
Through others we become ourselves. - Lev Vygotski
[speech] What do you define as a good person? [ask the audience what they believe makes a good
person] Were all good people here arent we? {possibly say this or use what the audience gives me}
We love our families and friends and wed do anything for them, we respect the law, we complete
our assignments, we go to work and we clean up after ourselves.
Thats what defines a good person right?
Now I must ask, do you believe Jake is a good person? The beginning of the movie highlights the
perfect bromace between Jake and Roger, they do everything together, their essentially brothers.
But then when he gets the chance to move on in life, instead of pulling his friend with him he leaves
him behind and he does nothing when he is bullied. That doesnt make him a bad person right? Its
not as though he is bulling himself right, he just doesnt do anything to stop it.
Vygotski says through others we become ourselves Jakes reality is that Roger is on the outside,
theyre no longer friends he has nothing to do with him and he is not his responsibility. While he is
not doing anything directly he is still mirroring the actions of his peers by rejecting his oldest friend
because he is different.
Dynamism and Mirroring

[slide] DYNAMISM. :
the theory that phenomena of matter or mind are due to the action of forces rather than to
motion or matter.
Empiricism is a theory which states that knowledge comes only or primarily from sensory
experience.
Experience is translated into concepts, which in turn are used
as guides in the choice of new experiences. Learning is
conceived of as a four stage cycle. Immediate concrete
experience is the basis for observation and reflection, these
observations are assimilated into a theory from which new
implications or hypotheses are used to indicate new
experiences (Kolb, Fry:1975).
[Speech] Every day in our mundane cycle we go through life with a veil of ignorance over our eyes,
just like Jake. And by no means please dont take offence, I am just as guilty as you are. But we walk
past our friends and family and even strangers on the street and we completely ignore their
situation. Now I have to ask you to think youre a minute, when was the last time you asked a friend
or a family member are you ok , and actually cared about their answer. When was the last time you
passed a person on the street in distress and offered them help. And when was the last time you saw
someone being bullied and stood up for them.
Newtons first law of motion states An object will remain at rest or in a constant state of motion
until an external force acts upon it similarly Dynamism relates to how situations or frames of mind
are only affected and changed after an impacting experience. In the clip it took Roger taking his own

life for Jake to realise what his actions or lack their off have had such an impact on his once best
friends life.
Looking at Kolbs cycle, we can see that through his own experience of Rogers suicide, Jake is caused
to reflect on his actions and as a result he beings to reflect on his environment and as a result he
prevents the suicide of Jonny.
And really the point I want to make is that, you need to think that while you are not acting directly.
Sometimes you need to stand up for others, even if it means you will be ostracized from the people
you currently call friends. You could save someones life.
