Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Requirements and

Recommendations for Accelerated Pathway (AP) Students

General
AP students complete the 480 points required to gain a BE (Hons) degree in three years rather than the standard four
years. Credits are earned by completing 150 points each year (cf 120 points for standard engineering students). The
remaining 30 point deficit is fulfilled by completing two 15 point papers during summer school. This document
outlines the recommended program for CEE AP students. Requirements for each year are outlined, and additional
sections describe the requirements relating to the summer school papers and engineering part I papers. Information
provided should be considered a guide only, and AP students are encouraged to discuss options with their mentors.
The programme of study must be approved by the AP programme coordinator(s).

AP Year 1
During their first year on the accelerated pathway, students will take 120 points dictated by the requirements of the
standard CEE part II program. Two additional 15 point papers will be taken. These are Enggen 121 Engineering
Mechanics in the first semester, and Enggen 115 Introduction to Engineering Design in the second semester.

AP Year 2
80 points of AP year 2 will be filled by the compulsory papers for CEE part III. The remaining 70 points for AP year
2 are chosen by students according to the following restrictions.

30 points - One 15 point paper in each semester dictated by the choice of EITHER the structural or
environmental pathways within the CEE degree.
10 points - One 10 point paper taken in the second semester. This paper is chosen from a selection of three CEE
specific electives (Structural Dynamics, Geomechanics 3 and Environmental Fluid Mechanics).
30 points - One 15 point paper taken in each semester to cover part I papers not yet completed. These papers are
chosen by the student, and could be Engineering part I papers, or approved papers run inside or
outside the Faculty of Engineering but outside the standard CEE program. It is NOT permitted to take
the part IV research project (Civil 708) during AP year 2.

AP Year 3
AP year 3 is based on the requirements of the CEE part IV program. This requires students to complete 30 points of
compulsory papers (Civil 790 Civil Engineering Administration in semester 1 and Enggen 703 Professional and
Sustainability Issues in semester 2). Students must also complete a compulsory 30 point research project (Civil 708A
& B - 15 points in each semester). The remaining 60 points of the standard CEE part IV program are selected from a
list of elective papers covering specialist topics in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
In addition to the standard program, AP students must complete and additional 30 points consisting of one 15 point
paper in each semester. These may be selected from the CEE part IV elective list, the part I engineering papers not
previously completed, or papers from outside the standard CEE program.

Summer School
During the course of the 3 year AP degree, students must complete two 15 point papers during summer school. The
Faculty of Engineering offers very few papers during summer school. It is therefore advised that summer school
papers be chosen from the following options:

A paper fulfilling the general education paper requirement from engineering part I. Requirements for this paper
can be found at www.auckland.ac.nz/generaleducation.
Other Engineering part I papers not previously completed and which are still useful.
Papers taken from outside the Faculty of Engineering. These papers must be approved by a students mentor.

Summer school papers may be taken during any summer, including the summer before AP year 1, and the summer
after AP year 3 (immediately prior to commencement of a Master of Engineering degree). As summer school offerings
may change from year to year, students are directed to the Universitys summer school website to obtain the latest
information:

Engineering Part I Papers

AP students do not have to complete all of the papers that make up the standard Engineering part I. Some of these
papers are superseded by more advanced courses, and others are not relevant to Civil or Environmental Engineering.
Instead of these papers, AP students are encouraged to pursue higher level papers that are of interest to the student, or
that will give a broader understanding of topics relevant to a career in CEE. Substitution of part I papers with other
options must be discussed with and approved by the AP programme coordinator(s). Suggestions for completing part I
papers are as follows:

Students are referred to the University Calendar to investigate options for extra papers taken in lieu of standard
Engineering part I papers. Students are reminded to check Student Services Online to ensure course offerings for a
specific semester.

AP Programme Coordinators
AP programme coordinators are responsible for helping students with administrative questions and course enrolment.
All AP students will be required to meet with the AP programme coordinator before the beginning of each semester.
The purpose of the meeting is primarily to review and/or update the schedule of courses. AP programme coordinators
for CEE are:
