Abstract
The study on the communitys participation in the preservation of Chiang Khan tourist attraction,
Chiang Khan District, Loei Province, has applied qualitative research methodology by conducting in-depth
interviews with 20 key informants; local scholars and relevant individuals in the preservation work of
Chiang Khan. The objective of the study is to elaborate the researchs findings into strategies and projects
to develop the participation in preserving Chiang Khan towards sustainability. The discoveries are classified
as follows: Chiang Khan, a district of Loei Province, is rich with historical background and its population has
been well-known for a distinctive lifestyle, that is, living with simplicity in a family-like society, similar to
most communities in the countryside. Chiang Khan is also proud of its valuable cultural and traditional
heritage. Its distinguishing identity is that the villagers live together in traditional ancient-style houses. The
community is also considered independent as it directs its own lifestyle by letting the people participate in
decision-makings on the activities taking place in the area, for example, tourism in Chiang Khan, which the
local owns the rights to manage and tend to visitors wisdom as well as welcoming them. The population
plays a part in guiding developmental course and eventually brings in benefit from the tourism. They also
live in harmony and promote cultural preservation in various aspects, including the ancient-style housing
architecture. Such preservations committee members are selected from the villagers and community and
the work thereof would be distributed systematically. As for the communitys participation procedure, the
community leaders and residents would jointly discuss the work on the preservation of Chiang Khan,
where they are looking forward to maintaining and prolonging their precious cultural traits for the time yet
to come.
