Abstract
This study on participation in the preservation of Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai) of Ban Fang
Community, Kranuan District, Khon Kaen Province, has applied qualitative research methodology by
conducting in-depth interviews with 20 key informants. The discoveries are classified as follows: the
tradition of Rocket Festival is held to build up fun, to unite people in the community, and to preserve
such valuable cultural tradition. Every year, as the 6th month approaches, the villagers, elders, and monks
in the village would gather to appoint the exact appropriate date and time for the festival. A village
committee would then be set up to carry out the planning of activities. Once the date is agreed upon,
the villager would ask for permissions from the relevant authority. People would donate their money to
help as well as providing tools, participating in activities, and voicing their opinions upon the Rocket
Festival. The villagers would gather to craft rockets (Bang Fai) and brainstorm ideas to make them fly
up high, such as using good-quality materials, as well as discussing concerns for safety of the Festivals
audience. On the Rocket Festival day, merit-making session is held in the morning and followed by
parades of rockets from each village that old and young participants join in. Local games and rocket
showcase competition are also featured. The rockets will later be delivered to the bases to be fired as
high as possible. The villagers believe that this will make rain fall according to seasonal pattern, bringing
abundant water and encouraging farmers to continue with their profession to make a living for the time to
come.
